Cruise ship encounters in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland

The Cruise industry has become very popular and the market in Europe is growing. The most popular regions are the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. During our cruise in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland, we encountered 15 different cruise companies. We didn’t expect that there would be so many in this region. The most famous ones were Aida, Celebrity, Costa, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian and P&O.

De Cruise sector is zeer populair geworden en de markt in Europa is aan het groeien. De meest populaire regio’s zijn de Middellandse zee en Noord Europa. Gedurende onze Cruise in de Baltische Zee en de Golf van Finland, kwamen we 15 verschillende Cruise maatschappijen tegen. We hadden niet verwacht dat het er zo veel gingen zijn. De meest beroemde maatschappijen waren Aida, Celebrity, Costa, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian en P&O..

The Holland America Line – Cruise History, Rotterdam

We like cruising and have already sailed several times with Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. Holland America is one of the cruise companies we would consider for a future holiday. But why do we write about this when we have not used the company yet? The cruise line was founded in 1873 in the country we live in, The Netherlands. During our visit of Rotterdam, the original seat of the company, we saw the old cruise terminal of the Holland America line next to the modern building which is used today. Holland America cruises still frequently uses the harbour of Rotterdam as departure port. The name “Rotterdam” is also used as name of one of the Holland America ships. This is however the sixth ships with that name, one of its predecessors is permanently docked next to the Holland America terminal. It sailed for the first time in 1959 and is now a multi functional event centre in the harbour of Rotterdam.

We houden van cruisen en hebben reeds verschillende keren gevaren met Celebrity en Royal Caribbean. Holland America is een cruise maatschappij die we overwegen voor een toekomstige vakantie. Maar waarom schrijven we hierover als we nog niet met deze maatschappij gevaren hebben. De cruiseline werd opgericht in 1873, in het land waar we wonen, Nederland. Bij ons bezoek aan Rotterdam, waar de oorspronkelijk zetel was van de maatschappij gevestigd was, zagen we de oorspronkelijke terminal naast het nieuwe gebouw van de cruiseline. Holland America line gebruikt nog steeds regelmatig de haven van Rotterdam als vertrekplaats. De naam “Rotterdam” wordt ook gebruikt als naam van schip. Het is zelfs het 6de schip met deze naam, een voorganger van de “Rotterdam” ligt als multi functioneel centrum gedokt in de haven. Het vaarde voor het eerst in 1959 en ligt hier sinds 2005..

Cruise ships arriving in the harbour of Civitavecchia

Our cruise has come to end and we are not alone, the harbour of Civitavecchia is welcoming several other cruise ships like: the Holland America Ryndam, the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Sea, and the Holland America Noordam. We still have some days to visit Rome but we disembark the Celebrity Silhouette on the day these picitures were taken.

Onze cruise komt tot een eind en we zijn niet alleen, de haven van Civitavecchia verwelkomt verscheidene andere Cruise schepen zoals: de Holland America Ryndam, de Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Sea, en de Holland America Noordam. We hebben nog enkele dagen om Rome te bezoeken maar op de dag dat deze foto's genomen zijn moesten we de Celebrity Silhouette ontschepen.

Cruising through the street of Messina with the wind blowing in your hair

In the south of Italy, the Street of Messina is dividing the main land from Sicily. It is a busy commercial route for ships carrying oil, containers and passengers. In the harbour we see the Holland America Noordam cruise ship docked. The hills on both sides of the Italian shores are very beautiful and the wind blows very furious entering the passage to the southern Mediterranean Sea. A nice opportunity to make some playful photos of Kristel on the top deck of the Celebrity Silhouette. Doesn't she look like a top model?

In het zuiden van Italië, splijt de Straat van Messina het vaste land af van Sicilië. Het is een drukke commerciële vaarroute voor schepen die olie, containers en passagiers vervoeren. In de haven zien we de Noordam van de Holland America cruise rederij liggen. De heuvels aan beide Italiaanse kustlijnen hebben een ruwe schoonheid en de wind waait krachtig door de waterpassage naar de zuidelijke Middellandse Zee. Een mooie gelegenheid om enkele speelse foto's te maken van Kristel op het bovenste dek van de Celebrity Silhouette. Ziet ze er niet uit als een top model.?

Rotterdam Erasmusbrug and the cruise port

The Erasmusbrug (Erasmus bridge) is one of the typical sights for which Rotterdam is known. Just think about the Rotterdam Marathon or the Red Bull Air Race. This is amazing because the bridge was only completed in 1996. We were a bit unlucky that it was a cloudy day but fortunate it was not raining. On the other side of the river “Nieuwe Maas” you find the Cruise port. This time the “Holland America” ship “Ryndam” was docked. All passengers were participating to the emergency drill before sailing off to the Norwegian Fjords. Have a nice trip and happy return in 8 days.

De Erasmusbrug is een echte bezienswaardigheid waarvoor Rotterdam gekend is. Denk maar aan de Rotterdam marathon of de Red Bull Air Race. Het is ongelooflijk want deze brug werd pas gebouwd in 1996. We hadden een beetje pech dat het bewolkt was maar gelukkig regende het niet. Aan de andere kant van de rivier de Nieuwe Maas vind je de cruise terminal. Deze keer lag het “Holland America” schip de “Ryndam” aangelegd. Alle passagiers namen deel aan de noodprocedure oefening voor het afvaren naar de Noorse Fjorden. Geniet van je 8 daagse cruise..
