Champagne on the helipad, watching Allure of the Seas in St. Maarten

The Allure of the Seas is a ship of the Royal Caribbean Oasis class and has a maximum capacity of 6.400 passengers. It is one of the biggest cruise ships of the world. As Elite Plus members of Celebrity Cruises, we were invited for a glass of champagne on the helicopter path of the Eclipse.

From here we are going to experience the departure out of the port of St. Maarten, most likely our favorite port of the Caribbean. The Allure of the Seas is just incredible. The height of the ceilings and size of the suites are impressive. What a ship.

In the port we also saw some exclusive yachts. These must be from very rich people. There were five major cruise ships in port and this is not surprising given the facilities available on the island.

Van hier uit konden we volop genieten van het afscheid van St. Maarten, één van onze favoriete Caribische eilanden. De Allure of the Seas is ongelooflijk. De hoogte en grote van de suites zijn indrukwekkend. Wat een cruise schip. 

In de haven zagen we ook enkele exclusieve jachten. Dit moeten toch heel rijke mensen zijn. Er waren vijf grote cruise schepen in de haven en dit was niet verrassend daar het eiland heel veel te bieden heeft.

Rock climbing on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship

The Brilliance of the Seas ship from Royal Caribbean has a climbing wall. It is located on the 13th floor in open air. We guess that wall itself is around 15 metres high. All passengers can use it free of charge and you get professional support. For me this was a real challenge because I had never done this before. Starting to climb at the age of 41? Being a Ballroom Dancer, this shouldn’t be a problem. With a bit of proud, I reached the top. My wife Kristel, had climbed before when she was a teenager. But that is a while ago. They say it is like riding a bike, you never forget. It is true, she was at the top within two minutes, it was like walking up the stairs. The support staff gave some rope and she abseiled down like a pro. Again I learned something new about my wife on this cruise, I didn’t know she could do this.

De Brilliance of the Seas Cruise schip van Royal Caribbean heeft een open lucht klimmuur op het 13de verdiep. We denken dat deze ongeveer 15 meter hoog is. Alle passagiers kunnen hiervan gratis gebruikt maken en je krijgt begeleiding. Voor mij was dit een grote uitdaging want ik had dit nog nooit gedaan. Beginnen met klimmen op de leeftijd van 41? Als Ballroom danser zou dit toch geen probleem mogen zijn. Met toch wat fierheid, bereik ik de top. Mijn vrouw Kristel, had reeds geklommen toen ze een tiener was. Dit is wel een tijdje geleden. Maar ze zeggen dat het is zoals fietsen, je verleert het nooit. Het was waar, binnen de twee minuten stond ze aan de top, het was net alsof ze op een trap wandelde. De man beneden gaf haar wat meer touw en ze kwam abgeseild naar beneden als een pro. Deze cruise heb ik weer iets nieuws geleerd van mijn vrouw, ik wist niet dat ze dit kon..

Brilliance of the Seas – Speciality restaurant Chops Grille

This Royal Caribbean restaurant focuses on meat dishes. They claim to have the best steak on the high seas. We must say that the filet mignon was indeed excellent. This was the restaurant with the best atmosphere on the ship. It was small, cosy and offered a good service. The spicy tuna and chocolate tart were also good. The wine card was limited and they still have to learn a lot about wine, no sommeliers were working in the restaurant. In each dinner experience we had, the waiter asks us which wine we would like to drink before we even had the food menu. Food pairing doesn’t exist yet at Royal Caribbean. The cruise ship now sails to Abu Dhabi.

Dit Royal Caribbean specialiteiten restaurant focust zich op vleesgerechten. Ze beweren de beste steak te hebben op zee. We moeten toegeven dat de filet pur inderdaad uitstekend was. Dit was het restaurant op het schip met de beste atmosfeer, gezelligheid en bood een goede bediening aan. De pittige tonijn en chocoladetaart waren goed. De wijnkaart was beperkt en hier moeten ze nog veel leren, er werken geen sommeliers in het restaurant. Bij iedere diner ervaring bracht men eerst de wijnkaart, met de vraag welke wijn we wilden, vooraleer we ook maar een menu kaart kregen. Het paren van eten met wijn moet nog worden ontdekt bij Royal Caribbean. Het cruise schip vaart nu richting Abu Dhabi..

The harbour of Muscat and our first impressions of Oman

Muscat is the capital of Oman. In this harbour city, Sultan Qaboos bin Said has his palace and in the docks you she the royal yacht. Oman is a country covered by mountain ranges; the translated name for Muscat is the cliffs. The streets are super clean, you find statues and pieces of art along the harbour promenade. On many of the hills, you see forts. The roads are very modern and areas with grass and flowers are well maintained. You find these everywhere in the city and suburbs. Taxis are cheap and people are friendly. We can’t wait to discover this country with its forts, nature and culture. The country opened for tourism in 2004, so this is only 7 years. We never expected we would be here so soon after opening the borders.

Muscat is de hoofdstad van Oman. In de havenstad heeft Sultan Qaboos bin Said zijn paleis en in het dok ligt de koninklijke jacht. Oman is een land bedekt met bergketens, de vertaling van Muscat betekent; de kliffen. De straten zijn ongelooflijk proper, nergens is afval te bespeuren, wel vind je er monumenten, beeldhouwwerken en kunst langs de havenpromenade. Op de heuvels zie je vele forten. De wegen zijn modern en overal aangelegd met grasperkjes en bloemen. Taxi's zijn goedkoop en de mensen zeer vriendelijk. Met ongeduld kijken we uit naar het ontdekken van dit land met zijn natuur, forten en cultuur. Oman heeft zijn grenzen voor toerisme pas geopend in 2004, 7 jaar geleden. We hadden nooit verwacht hier zo vroeg na de start van het toerisme een bezoek te brengen..

Speciality Restaurant Portofino on the Brilliance of the Seas cruise ship

As the name Portofino already reveals, this is an Italian restaurant. The restaurant interior was rather simple with wooden chairs, but they were comfortable. A large choice of meat and fish was available on the menu, as well for the starters as the main courses. Our preferred plated were Tuna Carpaccio, Beef Carpaccio, Tuna steak, Oso Bucco, the chocolate strawberries and the Tiramisu. The quality of the restaurant was good but incomparable to what Celebrity cruises is offering for similar speciality restaurant cover fees. While enjoying our dinner, the ship sets course to the country of Oman.

Zoals de naam reeds laat vermoeden, dit is een Italiaans restaurant. Het interieur is wat simpel met houten stoelen maar ze waren bekleed en comfortabel. Er was een ruime keuze in vlees en vis, zowel in voor- als hoofdgerechten. Onze voorkeur ging uit naar tonijn Carpaccio, rundcarpaccio, tonijn steak, Oso Bucco, chocolade aardbeien en de Tiramisu. De kwaliteit van het restaurant was redelijk maar totaal niet te vergelijken met wat Celebrity Cruises aanbied tegen dezelfde extra kost voor zijn specialiteiten restaurants. Terwijl we van ons avondeten genieten is het schip naar het land Oman aan het varen..

Great entertainment on the Brilliance of the Seas cruise ship- Royal Caribbean

We have started our Cruise with the Brilliance of the Seas, a ship from Royal Caribbean. The ship has a capacity of 2.500 passengers and is around 10 years old. For us this is the first cruise with Royal Caribbean, we normally sail with Celebrity Cruises. If you look at the price quality ratio, this is certainly a good deal but the quality is far below what Celebrity is offering its guests. On the pictures, we provide some impressions of the ship, stateroom, atrium with Christmas three, the main dining room, the casino, the indoor and outdoor swimming pool, the climbing wall, and the theatre. The shows are excellent, up to a level we never expected. Royal Caribbean has received several awards for its entertainment. We now continue our journey in the Middle East and the next harbour will be Fujairah in the UAE.

We zijn afgevaren met de Brilliance of the Seas, een schip van Royal Caribbean. Het heeft een capaciteit van 2.500 passagiers en is ongeveer 10 jaar oud. Voor ons is dit de eerste cruise met Royal Caribbean want normaal varen we met Celebrity Cruises. Als je kijkt naar de prijs kwaliteit verhouding is dit zeker een goede deal, maar de kwaliteit is ver beneden wat Celebrity Cruises zijn gasten aanbied. Met de foto’s geven wij u enkele indrukken van het schip, de kamers, het atrium met kerstboom, het hoofdrestaurant, het casino, het binnen en buiten zwembad, de klimmuur, en het theater. De shows zijn uitstekend, van een niveau dat we nooit hadden verwacht. Royal Caribbean heeft dan ook verschillende prijzen gewonnen in de cruise wereld voor zijn entertainment. We gaan nu verder met onze reis door het Midden Oosten en onze volgende haven zal Fujairah zijn in de VAE..
