Dome of the Cajetan or Kajetanerkirche in Salzburg

Outside the Cajetan church of Salzburg your attention is drawn to the impressive dome that even changes colour at night. Inside the church, the dome with its fantastic fresco’s is also the main feature of the church interior. The fresco painting displays the Glory of Saint Cajetan, but who is this Saint? I have to admit that this was new to me. He was a diplomat who was the main advisor of the pope during the 16th century and founded a hospital to support incurable patients. He came originally from Venice.

Back to the church however, it was built in the Baroque style during the 17th century and has at the front to side chapels. The high altar is really impressive. Like in the Erhardkirche, people could not enter the church because of a closed metal gate. You see that the side chapels are actively used because of the burning candles and flowers. On the right side we saw a holy-water font attached to the wall with an angel head holding wings and in the font there was a stone fish. It is the first time we see such a font and are wondering what the artist meant by the fish. That again this water brings life?

On each side of the church buildings are connected. This was an abbey. People who like to visit Salzburg could start here at the Kajetanerplatz. It is easy to reach by car and there is an underground parking.

Fountains indicate the importance of horses for Salzburg

The three major fountains of Salzburg: the Residenzbrunnen, the Neptune fountain and the Pferdeschwemme (or horse swimming area) all refer to the importance of horses for the city during the 17th and 18th century. In each fountains you find statues of horses and in two of them a pond where horses could swim or be bathed. Salzburg is the first city we know that has such old horse facilities embedded in there pieces of art.

The Residenzbrunnen at the Residenzplatz next to the Dom of Salzburg is the largest Baroque fountain outside Italy. It was built in 1661 and is made out of the local brown marble. The fountain platform is carried by a few men standing on a pile of stones surrounded by horses in a water pond.

On the other side of the Dom on Kapitelplatz you find the Neptune fountain. This fountain, just like the Pferdeschwemme on Hofstallgasse is a pond where horses could really go into the water for a swim or to be cleaned. The Roman style fountain features Neptune with his seahorse. It was built in the 18th century.

The healing force of spring water in the Erhardskirche, Salzburg

The gothic Erhardskirche in Salzburg was built at the end of the 17th century and has a nice looking grey façade. If you would look at the exterior and remove the three domes, you could convince people this is a mansion instead of a church. On one of the pictures you see Kristel standing on a balcony just above a spring source. This source should contain healing water, maybe that’s why she looks so happy.

The church has been named after the Holy Erhard who was the patron for the ill, the poor and the shoemakers. We find this a strange combination. Here in this church the healing source as well as the location next to a 600 year old hospital are the most important factors for the name of the church.

Like some of the other small churches in Salzburg, the Erhardskirche was closed to the public. You could go into the entrance portal and see the interior but it was impossible to enter the church itself due to a locked gate. We are wondering if they lock this because of fear of vandalism or theft, but it is a pity.

Above the high altar the ceiling is covered with angels and the red brown sculptures integrated into the walls are a real eye catcher. Also inside the church the theme of the healing spring water is coming back. After our visit we continued our walk up to the Salzburger hills. Maybe we should have taken a bit of this water with us to make the climb easier. Would it help?

Salzburg a major Austrian city where culture and nature melt together

When we think of visiting Austria, most of us think about skiing and the Alps. There are however two major cities in the country which have incredible historical treasures. This is the capital Vienna and the second most important city of Austria, namely Salzburg. It is a bit strange because the town only has a population of about 150.000 inhabitants. Next to the fact that Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and the “Sound of Music”, it blends in with nature.

Right through the city flows the Salzach river who brings cold and fresh water down from the Alps. A small metal bridge in remembrance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart helps pedestrians to cross the river. It’s called Mozartsteg and was built in 1903.

In the city centre of Salzburg you find small parks, flower beds, houses decorated with flowers, people investing a lot of time in gardening. The city is in fact located in the hills and just a few kilometres further they rise into the alps. Do you remember the flower fields and meadows where Julie Andrews sang “The Hills are alive”. Well, that’s here in this region where the famous movie “The Sound of Music” of the family Von Trapp was recorded. We hope you enjoy our nature pictures of Salzburg. If it is not possible for you to visit the city, maybe you should consider looking at the “Sound of Music” again on DVD.

Modern art in the form of benches in Salzburg

Salzburg is a city with a rich history, historical buildings and architecture dominate the image of this famous Mozart town in Austria. There are however efforts to add a modern touch to the classical street views of Salzburg. A collection of modern art benches in different colours, designs and shapes seems like a good initiative from “Design Sitz”. It certainly gave us the opportunity to make nice pictures of the benches, children posing and off course Kristel having a break on a striped version of such a bench.

The cathedral or Dom of Salzburg

It is becoming more and more difficult to write original contributions of church articles. Our blog has become almost a database of church collections. We have now written about 121 churches from all over the world, some are small and local but this giant cathedral is exceptional. It is our intension to let you enjoy our visits with pictures and provide you information of what we see and feel.

The twin towers of the Salzburger Dom are an eye catcher. The clean façade and the four saint statues at the entrance give you a warm welcome. Entering the church, you are amazed of the spacious feeling, the arched ceiling decorations. Just look at the carved details of the arched ceiling in combination with the religious paintings. The ceiling of this church could be considered a treasury chamber.

One level below the church is the crypt with graves of cardinals and high ranked members of the church community. There are several rooms and chapels with seat for people who want to pray in the crypt. One of the doors to the lower level is made of stained glass.
