A bicycle tour on the city wall of Xian

Xian was once considered a big city in China but nowadays with only 4 million inhabitants it is a small town. One of the most amazing features of the city is the defence wall which is still intact. It surrounds the old city of Xian and has a length of almost 14km. It is a bit too long to walk around it but you can rent a bicycle which we did together with some other Belgians.

It is hard to believe how high and wide the wall is over such a long distance. We occasionally stop to take pictures from the heavy traffic below, unique hotels, modern houses built in similar style and we even saw an open air theater from above. A pity there was so much fog but that was everywhere the case in China.

Xian was ooit een van de grootste steden van China maar nu met zijn ongeveer 4 miljoen inwoners is het slechts een kleine stad. Een van de meest interessante bezienswaardigheden is de verdedigingsmuur die nog steeds intact is. Het omsluit de oude stad en heeft een lengte van bijna 14 km. Iets te lang om volledig te bewandelen maar je kan er ook fietsen huren. Dit hebben we dan ook gedaan samen met een groepje Belgen.

Het is moeilijk te geloven dat de muur overal zo hoog en breed is. Af en toe stopten we voor foto’s te nemen van het drukke verkeer, unieke hotels, moderne huizen in een wijk gebouwd en we zagen zelfs een open lucht voorstelling van op de muur. Spijtig dat er veel smog was maar dit was algemeen het geval in China.

Comparing the city defence walls of Dubrovnik, Tallinn and Xian

We have been to several places in the world where defence walls play an important role in the city's history. Maintenance of these walls, which are sometimes more than a thousand years old, is extremely important. They are part of the image of the city, recognition by UNESCO and a major source of income from tourism.

Let's start with Dubrovnik, a city in Croatia we just visited. It is allowed to walk on the wall around the old town of Dubrovnik. The construction is still intact and on each one of the corners you find a fortress or defence tower. The length is about 2 km, so this must be possible for many visitors. It is one of the most impressive city walls we have seen.

For the next defence wall, we go back to last year when we were in Tallinn, Estonia. Here it is not possible to walk around the city on the wall. There are some large sections still intact and they look great. It is no surprise to us that the defense wall and gates of Tallinn are the main tourist attractions of the city.

As last defence wall, we look to an other continent, Asia. This must be the most impressive city defense wall we have ever seen. The wall of Xian in China, not to be confused with the Great Wall of China because that is not a city wall. In Xian, the wall is 16 m wide and has a length of 26 km. It is completely intact and it is possible to rent a bike to cycle around the city on the wall. We really enjoyed this bike tour with great views over the city of Xian.

We hebben reeds enkele plaatsen ter wereld bezocht waar verdedigingsmuren een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de stad. Het onderhoud van deze muren, die soms meer als duizend jaar oud zijn is extreem belangrijk. Zij vormen het beeld van de stad, maken deel uit van het imago, zijn erkend door UNESCO en blijven een belangrijke bron van inkomsten uit toerisme.

Laten we aanvangen met Dubrovnik, een stad die we net bezocht hebben. Het is er toegelaten op de muur rondom het oude stadscentrum te wandelen. De constructie is nog steeds intact en op iedere hoek vind je een fort of verdedigingstoren. De lengte is ongeveer 2 km, dus deze wandeling moet voor vele bezoekers binnen hun mogelijkheden liggen. Het is een van de meest indrukwekkende verdedigingsmuren die we ooit hebben gezien.

Voor de tweede stadsmuur gaan we terug naar vorig jaar toen we in Tallinn, Estonia waren. Hier is het niet mogelijk op de muur rond de stad te wandelen. Er zijn echter wel enkele grote stukken van de muur intact en deze zien er uitstekend uit. Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat de muur en poorten van Tallinn bij de populairste bezienswaardigheden van de stad horen.

Als laatste verdedigingsmuur kijken we naar een ander continent, China. Dit is de meest indrukwekkende stadsmuur die we ooit hebben gezien. De muur van Xian mag niet worden verward met de Grote Muur van China want deze is geen stadsmuur. In Xian, de stadsmuur is 16m breed en heeft een lengte van 26 km. Hij is nog volledig intact en je kan er een fiets huren om rond de stad, op de muur, te rijden. We hebben echt genoten van deze fietstocht en de prachtige zichten over de stad..
