Enjoying a day of sun while cruising through the Straight of Messina

It was a lovely sea day on the Celebrity Equinox and most passengers are on deck to enjoy the sun while cruising through the Straight of Messina. The last time we were here there stood a strong wind between Calabria and Sicily. Now, the Mediterranean Sea is as flat as a mirror.

At the bow you have a clear view. On the upper deck, people are sun bathing or having a drink on one of the terraces. The swimming pool area is very popular, here you have a cocktail bar, hot tubs and live music. Relaxing on the lawn is possible on floor 14, some people play Jeu de boules or just lay there on a towel. In the background you see the mountains of Sicily.

Het was een prachtige dag wanneer de Celebrity Equinox door de Straat van Messina voer. Op onze laatste doorsteek stond hier extreem veel wind tussen Calabrië en Sicilië. Nu is de Middellandse Zee rimpelloos en het water lijkt wel een spiegel.

Aan de boeg heb je vrij zicht en een blauwe hemel. Op de bovenste dekken zijn de passagiers aan het zonnebaden of iets aan het drinken op een terras. Het zwembad bereik is heel populair omwille van de warme bubbelbaden, cocktailbar en live muziek. Ontspanning op het grasveld is mogelijk op dek 14. Sommigen spelen hier Jeu de Boules of liggen te slapen op een handdoek. In de achtergrond zie je de bergen van Sicilië voorbij glijden.

Skateboarding at the O'Neill Beach Club, Blankenberge

This is probably the most popular sports activity at the beach club. When you see how many teenagers participate and ride up and down these ramps, it is impressive. The sun shines and several boys perform their jumps without wearing t-shirts or any protection. An act of bravery. In the group, we saw one girl showing her skills. She must earn a lot of respect from all the men.

Dit is waarschijnlijk de meest populaire sportactiviteit op de beach club. Als je ziet hoeveel tieners er deelnemen en op en neer skaten op deze ramp, het is gewoon indrukwekkend. De zon schijnt en verschillende jongens voeren hun sprongen uit zonder T-shirt of bescherming te dragen. Een moedige beslissing. In de groep toont ook een meisje haar vaardigheden. Zij moet veel respect krijgen en haar mannelijke collega's kijken bewonderend toe.

General impressions of Blankenberge, the most popular beach town of Belgium

Blankenberge is known as the beach town for the common man. Some say it is nothing compared to Knokke, the beach location for the rich and famous. We do not agree. Blankenberge has so much entertainment to offer that we would not even consider Knokke.

On the wide sandy beach they have clubs that offer music, snacks and drinks. There is the historical pier, a harbour, an arcade palace, a small carnival fair, sport facilities, an old veledrome and a race track for go-karts. While walking in the city you discover houses with fabulous facades. Unfortunately most of these houses are replaced by high rise apartment buildings.

Kristel looks around in the shops while others eat a hamburger in the American snack bar. At the casino bronze child statues climb the tower. A special sight and it is also strange because children are not allowed inside the casino.

When you like music, go to the White Horse (Het Witte Paard) for an evening of music and cabaret. There are also a few high quality theatres in town. It is certainly something else than the three Scottish men in kilts we saw playing on a bagpipe in the street. Which was also fun.

Blankenberge staat gekend als de badplaats voor de gewone man. Sommigen vinden dit niets in vergelijking met Knokke, de kuststad voor de rijken. Wij zijn hier niet mee akkoord. Blankenberge heeft zoveel te bieden dat we zelfs Knokke niet overwegen.

Op de brede zandstranden staan er clubs die muziek, drankjes en snacks verkopen. Blankenberge heeft een historische pier, een haven, lunaparken, een kleine kermis, sport faciliteiten, een oude velodrome en de racebaan voor go-karts. Tijdens een wandeling ontdek je huizen met ongelooflijke gevels. Spijtig genoeg worden deze huizen regelmatig vervangen door hoogbouw met appartementen.

Kristel neust wat rond in de winkeltjes terwijl anderen een hamburger eten aan een Amerikaanse bar. Op de toren van het Casino klimmen bronzen kinderen naar boven. Een speciaal zicht en ook heel raar want kinderen worden niet toegelaten in het casino. 

Als je van muziek en show houdt, kan je terecht in het Witte Paard, ambiance verzekerd. Er zijn ook enkele toneelhuizen van hoge kwaliteit. Het is eens iets anders dan de drie Schotten in kilt die op hun doedelzak spelen op straat. Begrijp me niet verkeerd dat is ook leuk en bewonderenswaardig.
