In the previous article we saw how the volcano Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompeii in the year 79. Now the mountain is about 1.000 metres lower. We start our relatively easy hike to the top of the crater. Sometimes the walking path is a bit steep and you feel it in your legs. On your way up, the views of the city and the bay of Naples becomes more and more spectacular. The crater was just a deep pit with rocks, where is the lava? My first top of a crater was not what I expected but it was still impressive. The volcano is still active and you see occasionally some smoke and steam. A park guide explained us that by taking the temperature of the escaping steam they measure the activity of the volcano. If the temperatures would rise significantly, it could indicate a higher risk for eruption. The regular checks ensure that there is no danger for visitors. The hike from the bus stop to the end point of the crater and back, is a walk of approximately 1,5 hours. Go for it, you don’t have to be an athlete to conquer the Vesuvius.

Thanks for the pictures Filip! The volcano looks easy to hike with being at 1000 m high. And, you have a great view of the crater as well as Naples, a famous footballing city!

Oh, they have walking trails all around it! And I love your pictures, the flowers are beautiful! What a great view!!! I see there is a city down there, and you mentioned that there are people living there on your last post. Why would anyone want to live at the base of an active volcano?? I imagine the authorities would be able to warn people now, by taking the steam temperature. But their houses would all be destroyed.
ReplyDeleteYou are very brave! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI really like your life style; you travel a lot and you dance; and you look good together.

Have nice and good week.!
Well worth the hiking ...
ReplyDeleteWow, hiking under such hot sun? Surely an unforgettable experience!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a view of the city below. I can see why it is still dangerous for the townspeople with an active volcano so close.
ReplyDeleteYes, dancing and hiking can be a twin brothers of yours.
ReplyDeleteSo good..
Wow.. beautiful photos Filip.. I think i would be scared to go near an active volcano.. I'd imagine it blowing up when I'm right next to it.. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteKristel's top matches the bright leaves of that plant! It looks like quite a climb - reminds me a little of the Great Wall.
