While walking through the old capital of the Inca’s you are continuously reminded of this heritage by statues of lama’s, people in traditional clothing, fountains and gold blathered Inca masks. Inca ruins in the middle of Cusco stand side by side with Roman Catholic churches. Churches are more dominant in the city image because during the Spanish occupation, they replaced the Inca temples. The local population had to adjust to the religion of the conqueror.
Many of the houses have wooden balconies and they seem to like the color blue. In one of the alleys, I bought a blue Cusco hat to protect my fragile skin against the burning sun. In one of the shops you see a stand selling Coca. These are the leaves which help against altitude sickness. In many places you receive a cup of tea of these leaves or some people just chew them all day long.
There are many older people in streets and they still work. We liked the cross which was decorated with a yellow pattern and the bull ring which is now a soccer field. A marvelous new life for this venue.
