Having an afternoon walk at the Seattle Waterfront

The Seattle Waterfront is a collection of piers, warehouses, a port and above all many fresh fish restaurants. All the piers are numbered and you see many pieces of art. Outside the city center at Pier 90, the large cruise ships are docked. On the picture you see the Jewel of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) and the Celebrity Solstice (Celebrity Cruises). The smaller ships dock right in the city center.

Looking north, you see the high cranes to unload cargo. Signs of the industrial activity in front of the majestic Mount Rainier which is always snowcapped. When you don’t decide to rent a car, you could opt for a day trip to Mount Rainier. It looks really nice.

From the yacht port, you have excellent views of the Seattle skyline and the Ferris wheel. The water down below you is crystal clear. Also in this area, you find art and fountains. At the Ferris wheel pier you have a large choice of fish and crab restaurants. The most famous one is the Crab Pot. Alongside the Waterfront is a busy 3 lane highway.

De Waterfront in Seattle is een verzameling van pieren, pakhuizen, een haven en boven alles vele verse vis restaurants. Alle pieren zijn genummerd en je ziet er veel kunst. Buiten het stadscentrum aan pier 90, liggen de grote cruiseschepen aangemeerd. Op de foto zie je de Jewel of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) en de Celebrity Solstice (Celebrity Cruises). De kleinere cruiseschepen meren aan in de stad.

Aan de noordzijde zie je hoge kranen die vrachtschepen laden en lossen. Tekenen van industriële activiteit op de voorgrond van de majestueuze Mount Rainier berg die altijd bedekt is met sneeuw. Als je geen auto huurt kan je hier naar toe met een dagexcursie. Het ziet er erg goed uit. 

Van in de kleine jachthaven heb je uitstekende zichten op de skyline van Seattle en het reuzenrad. Het water onder je is kristalhelder. In dit gebied vind je ook veel kunst en fonteinen. Aan de pier met het reuzenrad is een grote keuze aan visrestaurants, het bekendste is de Crab Pot. Parallel met de Waterfront is een drukke autosnelweg met drie rijstroken, midden in de stad.

An introduction to our Israël adventure: The Holy Land and The Land of Jesus

This is the first time we visit Israël and we are curious. When approaching Haifa we got company from two military ships and a submarine which we briefly saw. Israel invests 20% of its national income in the security of their population consisting of Jews, Christians and Muslims. The harbour of Haifa is the second largest harbour of the country after Ashdod. You see several container carriers docked.

I am using this first article on Israël to describe what we are going to write about in the coming weeks. Some of the cities we have visited: including the interaction of the population groups mainly between Muslims and Jews. To my surprise the feeling of safety and harmony between people of different religions is good. It is not at all comparable with the negative news flashes we regularly see on TV.

A second topic we are going to describe in depth, relates the religious aspects of “The Holy Land” or “The Land of Jesus”. In a series of articles we will attempt to write chronologically about the live of Jesus linked to the sites we have visited. These articles will be numbered so that you recognise when we are writing about important events and places in the life of Jesus. This will be supported by many beautiful pictures. To be absolutely clear, this is a travel report and a way of sharing our visits and some history of The Holy Land with you. In no way we are trying to convince anyone to take up a first or new religion. From our side we can only say we enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Dit is de eerste keer dat we Israël gaan bezoeken en we zijn zeer benieuwd. In het naderen van de haven van Haifa worden we begeleid door twee militaire boten en een onderzeeër die we even hebben gezien. Israël investeert ongeveer 20% van het Nationale Inkomen aan militaire beveiliging voor zijn bevolking bestaande uit Joden, Christenen en Moslims. De haven van Haifa is de tweede grootste van het land na Ashdod. Op de foto’s zie je verschillende aangemeerde containerschepen.

Dit eerste Israël artikel gebruik ik ook als inleiding om een overzicht te geven waarover we de komende weken gaan schrijven. De steden die we bezocht hebben en de interactie tussen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen, voornamelijk Joden en Moslims. Tot onze verbazing was de harmonie tussen mensen en het gevoel van veiligheid veel groter dan verwacht en goed. Dit is totaal niet te vergelijken met de nieuwsflitsen die je ziet op TV.

Als tweede onderwerp gaan we dieper ingaan op de religieuze aspecten van “Het Heilige Land” of “Het Land van Jezus”. In een reeks artikelen gaan we proberen op chronologische wijze te schrijven over plaatsen die we hebben bezocht en betrekking hebben op het leven van Jezus. Deze artikelen zullen worden genummerd zodat je kan herkennen dat dit belangrijke plaatsen en momenten zijn in het leven van Jezus. Ze zullen worden ondersteunt met mooie foto’s. Voor alle duidelijkheid, dit is een reisverslag, om onze bezoeken en geschiedenis van het “Heilige Land”met jullie te delen. Op geen enkele wijze is dit een poging om iemand te overtuigen in een eerste of nieuw geloof. Van onze zijde hebben we er van genoten en veel bijgeleerd..
