The cathedral of St. Michiels and St. Goedele in Brussels

The exterior of the church looks a bit like the Notre Dame in Paris but smaller. Cathedral of St. Michiel and St. Goedele was built in the 13th century and is the most important church of Brussels. She was used for all religious celebrations of the Royal Family and has always played an important role in the lives of the rulers of this region.

Going back in time, it was hosting the funeral of Duke Jan of Brabant, the victory and defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and the baptising of Margareta of Austria. In the 20th century the Royal family celebrated here the weddings of kings and princes: Leopold and Astrid, Albert and Paola (the reigning King and Queen of Belgium), Boudewijn and Fabiola, Filip and Mathilde, and Laurent and Claire. There were also many Royal funerals.

The interior looks fantastic and is maintained to perfection. The stained glass windows are for me the master pieces of this church, we also liked the Grenzing organ and Our Lady carrying a miniature version of this church on the bible. It is easy to visit the cathedral since it is located close to the Central Station of Brussels.

De buitenzijde van de kerk lijkt een beetje op de Notre Dame in Parijs maar kleiner. De Kathedraal van St. Michiel en St. Goedele werd gebouwd in de 13de eeuw en is de belangrijkste kerk van Brussel. Ze werd gebruikt voor alle religieuze vieringen van de Koninklijke familie en heeft altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de levens van heersers uit de regio.

Laat ons terug gaan in de tijd, de kerk was het toneel voor de begrafenis van Hertog Jan van Brabant, de viering van de overwinning en nederlaag van Napoleon Bonaparte de bezetter van de regio, en de doop van Margaretha van Oostenrijk. Gedurende de 20ste eeuw vierden leden van de Koninklijke familie hier hun huwelijken: Leopold en Astrid, Albert en Paola (de huidige Koning en Koningin van België), Boudewijn en Fabiola, Filip en Mathilde, en Laurent en Claire. Er waren ook vele Koninklijke begrafenissen.

Het interieur ziet er fantastisch uit en perfect onderhouden. De brandglazen ramen zijn voor mij de mooiste kunstwerken van de kerk, we hielden ook van het Grenzing orgel en het beeld van Onze Lieve Vrouw die een miniatuur van de kerk vasthoud op een bijbel. Het is gemakkelijk de kathedraal te bezoeken daar ze vlak naast het Centraal Station van Brussel staat..
