National Palace of Barcelona with water cascades

The Palau National or the National Palace of Barcelona houses the largest art collection of the city. It focusses on the Catalonia province. From Plaza Espagna you see the enormous museum dominating the area. It is clearly visible on the Montjuic hill.

Like many architectural treasures in Barcelona, this palace was built for the 1929 World Exhibition. We particularly liked the cascading waterfalls and fountains. When the night falls, there is a magical fountain dance with modern and classical music. The colors of the fountains are amazing, just like the Palau National.

Het Palau National of het Nationaal Paleis van Barcelona bevat de grootste kunstcollectie van de stad. Het is volledig gericht op Catalaanse kunst. Van op Plaza Espagna zie je het enorme museum die het volledige gebied domineert. Het is duidelijk zichtbaar op de Montjuic heuvel. 

Zoals vele architecturale schatten in Barcelona werd dit paleis gebouwd voor de wereldexpositie van 1929. We waren in het bijzonder verrast door de trapsgewijze watervallen en fonteinen. Als de nacht valt komen de magische fonteinen tot leven met moderne en klassieke muziek. De kleuren van de fonteinen zijn ongelooflijk, juist zoals het Palau National.

Fantastic Post Office and City Hall of Madrid

A few years ago we passed by Plaza de Cibeles and saw the Cibeles Palace being renovation. Except for the towers it was completely covered by construction works. Today the cleaned-up white facade and sculptures look fantastic. This Cibeles Palace was used as Post Office. In the modern era, the volume of paper post dropped so much that it received a new destination.

In the corner a small part of the building is still a Post Office but now it is mainly used as City Hall, Museum, restaurant and for events in the Cristal Hall. In front of the palace you find the Cibeles Fountain with the Spanish flags, one of the most important monuments of Madrid. At this fountain Real Madrid celebrates its victories.

Inside Cibeles Palace is an art exposition which is open for the public. They have a nice collection of modern art, paintings, sculptures and photo's. Above the main staircase hangs a chaotic collection of T-shirts, a special sight. On one of the next pictures you see Kristel blending in with an art set up and me posing in front of a collection of old LP's.

Enkele jaren geleden kwamen we voorbij Plaza Cibeles en zagen enkel de torens van het Cibeles Paleis dat een grote renovatie onderging. Vandaag zien we de prachtige witte gevel en beeldhouwwerken in volle glorie. Het Cibeles Paleis was het oude postkantoor maar in deze moderne tijden zijn de volumes papieren post enorm gedaald dat het gebouw een nieuwe bestemming kreeg.

In de hoek is er nog steeds een postkantoor maar het paleis wordt nu hoofdzakelijk gebruikt als Stadhuis, museum, restaurant en voor evenementen in de Kristallen hal. Voor het paleis zie je de Cibeles Fontein met de Spaanse vlaggen, één van de belangrijkste monumenten van Madrid. Aan deze fontein worden de overwinningen van Real Madrid gevierd. 

Binnen in het Cibeles Paleis kan je gratis een kunsttentoonstelling bezoeken. Men heeft er een collectie moderne kunst, schilderijen, beeldhouwwerken en foto's. Boven de hoofdtrap hangt een verzameling chaotische T-shirts, een uitzonderlijk zicht. Op één van de foto's zie je Kristel samensmelten met een kunsthoekje later poseer ik nog voor een muur van LP's.

El Alcazar Palace, summer residence of the Spanish King, Sevilla

The Spanish Royal family owns this incredible El Alcazar palace from the 14th century. You see a Moorish, Arabic architecture from the Mudéjar style. We were surprised to find this here in Sevilla.

The rooms and structure of the palace are similar like the Topkapi Palace Harem in Istanbul with the only difference that there the king never had multiple wives here in Sevilla.The enormous room with golden inner dome looks onto the courtyard and pond. At the last royal wedding in Spain this hall was used for the reception and dinner.

Het Spaanse koningshof bezit dit ongelooflijk El Alcazar paleis uit de 14de eeuw. Je herkent de Moors, Arabische architectuur van de Mudéjar stijl. We waren verbaasd dit hier in Sevilla aan te treffen. 

De kamers en structuur van het paleis zijn gelijkaardig met de Topkapi Paleis Harem in Istanboel met het enige verschil dat de Spaanse koning nooit met meerdere vrouwen is gehuwd. De enorme kamer met gouden binnen koepel kijkt uit op het binnenplein met zijn vijver. Deze werd gebruikt voor de receptie en het feest van het recente koninklijke huwelijk van de Prins van Spanje.

The palace gardens of El Alcazar, Sevilla

Our next article will focus on the Incredible El Alcazar palace but today we look at the exterior and particularly to the palace gardens. It reminds us a bit of the French Renaissance style and gardens of the palace of Versailles. These gardens stood model for many of the other kingdoms in Europe, you find replicas of them in Germany, Russia and also here in Spain.

The walking pavements between perfectly cut bushes and orange trees make us think a bit of a maze. The palace gardens and the city of Sevilla are separated by a high wall with beautiful rock decorations. There is a small pond with an elegant fountain and the rock wall behind it contains paintings of angels and cupid.

Ons volgende artikel zal gaan over het ongelooflijk El Alcazar Paleis maar vandaag richten we ons op de buitenzijde en in het bijzonder de paleistuinen. Het doet ons een beetje denken aan de Franse Renaissance stijl en de tuinen van Versailles. Deze tuinen stonden hiervoor model zoals bij vele replica's in Europese landen als Rusland, Duitsland en nu ook Spanje. 

De wandelpaden tussen perfect gesnoeide struiken en appelsienbomen doen ons een denken aan een doolhof. De paleistuinen en het stadscentrum van Sevilla zijn gescheiden door een hoge muur met mooie rotsformaties. Er is een kleine vijver met elegante fontein met op de achtergrond de rotsmuur die schilderwerken van engelen en Cupido bevat.
