The modern port of Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the top cruise ports of Europe but today during the winter period we can not put our focus on this. There is almost no activity on the water, the sailing boats await their owners and the start of the spring. On the opposite side of where we stand, is a super yacht docked. How would the interior of such a vessel be like? We will never know.

The port of Barcelona holds many attractions like a big aquarium and an IMAX theatre. The design with splendid walking promenades is modern and in contradiction with the antique cable cars. We tried to take make a ride on such a cable car but the waiting queues were too long. We will certainly do this the next time we visit Barcelona, later in the spring.

Barcelona is één van de beste cruise havens van Europa maar vandaag op een koude winter dag kunnen we hier niet op focussen. Er is bijna geen beweging op het water, de zeilboten wachten op hun eigenaars en de start van de lente. Tegenover de plaats waar wij staan ligt een super jacht aangemeerd. Hoe zou deze er aan de binnenkant uit zien? Dat zullen we echter nooit te weten komen. 

De haven heeft veel te bieden waaronder een groot aquarium en een IMAX bioscoop. Het ontwerp van het geheel met prachtige wandelpromenades is modern en in zware tegenstelling met de antieke kabelbaan. We probeerden de kabelbaan te nemen maar er stond zo'n grote wachtrij dat we besloten dit te doen bij ons volgende Barcelona bezoek in de lente.

Guests in the swimming pool and slides on the MSC Preziosa in Barcelona

The sky is blue and the sea flat when we sail out in Barcelona. There are many cruise ships in the port but our attention goes out to the newest ship of MSC Cruises, the flagship called MSC Preziosa. The ship with its 18 decks looks great.

On the sun deck people are trying out the slides. It is not so warm but the passengers are brave. The guy ready to jump into the slide waves to our ship. Many people are at the swimming pool, protected against the wind by glass. Maybe it is warm enough in the sun.

De lucht is blauw en de zee kalm terwijl we uitvaren in Barcelona. Er zijn vele cruise schepen in de haven maar onze aandacht gaat uit naar het nieuwste schip van MSC cruises, het vlaggenschip de MSC Preziosa. Het schip telt 18 verdiepingen en ziet er zeer goed uit. 

Op het zonnedek proberen mensen de glijbanen uit. Het is niet zo warm maar de passagiers zijn moedig. De man die klaar staat de glijbaan in te springen zwaait nog even naar ons. Vele mensen staan rond het zwembad, beschermd tegen de wind door een glazen wand. Misschien is het zo toch warm genoeg in de zon.

Aerial cable car and the port of Barcelona

The port of Barcelona is one of the most popular cruise ports of Europe. Also our cruise ship departed from Barcelona and we were not alone. There were ships from Aida, Royal Caribbean, Costa, MSC and Carnival. Tourists visiting the city take a harbour boat trip to come closer to the cruise ships and the industrial activities of the harbour.

The harbour looks very active for cargo and petroleum products. On the Moll del Llvant, next to the beach you find the new "W" hotel. A glass tower full of luxury overlooking the beach of Saint Sebastian. On this quay you can take helicopter flights to explore Barcelona by air.

A cheaper alternative is the cable car over the port. It starts at Placa Palmeres in the Saint Sebastia Tower. Where you see the Aida cruise ship stands the middle tower, Jaume I. Inside the tower, the cable cars cross. The end point is at Park the Montjuic. During our next visit in Barcelona, we will certainly take the cable car.

De haven van Barcelona is een van de meest populaire cruisehavens van Europa. Ook ons schip vertrok uit deze haven en we waren niet alleen. Er waren ook schepen van Aida, Royal Caribbean, Costa, MSC en Carnival. Toeristen die de stad bezoeken maken een boottochtje om dichter bij de cruiseschepen en de industriële activiteiten van de haven te komen.

De haven lijkt heel actief in vrachttransport en olieproducten. Op de Moll del Llvant, naast het strand vind je het nieuwe "W" hotel. Een glazen toren vol luxe die uitkijkt op het strand van Sint Sebastia. Aan deze kaai kan je ook helikoptervluchten boeken om Barcelona van uit de lucht te bekijken. 

Een goedkoper alternatief is de kabelbaan over de haven. Deze start bij Placa Palmeres in de Sint Sebastiatoren. Aan het Aida schip staat de middelste toren, Jaume I, hier kruisen de gondels elkaar. Het eindpunt ligt op de heuvel van Parc de Montjuic. De volgende keer dat we Barcelona bezoeken maken we zeker een ritje in de kabelbaan..
