Dancing in the Alte Reithalle during the German Open Championships, Stuttgart

The GOC is the biggest dance tournament in the world with Grandslam competitions in Standard and Latin. All age classes participate in competitions for amateurs and professionals. The German television station SWR3 is broadcasting highlights of the event.

This is the third year in a row we are participating in the WDSF Senior I Standard. We danced very well and made it to the second round. Our competition was held in the Alte Reithalle, a historical location. In the 19th century this was a glass horse riding ring. Today, completely renovated with large chandeliers and a dance floor. It is a special feeling to be part of this tournament.

De GOC is de grootste danswedstrijd ter wereld met Grandslam competities in Standaard en Latin. Alle leeftijdscategorieën en competities voor amateurs en professionals staan op het programma. De Duitse televisiezender SWR3 zendt de hoogtepunten van de wedstrijd uit. 

Dit is het derde jaar op rij dat we deelnemen in de WDSF Senior I Standard. We waren heel tevreden over ons dansniveau en haalden de tweede ronde. Onze competitie werd gedanst in de Alte Reithalle, een historische locatie. Deze 19de eeuwse uit glas bestaande paardenring werd volledig gerenoveerd met sierlusters en een dansvloer. Het geeft ons een speciaal gevoel hier deel van uit te maken.

Danse Sportive International Marseille, WDSF Senior I standard

This weekend we danced the 20th Marseille International Open for the world ranking. Two tournaments in one weekend, organized by CADM (Club des Amateurs de Danse de Marseille). This is the second year in a row we participate here. The event is organised in “Palais des Sports” and the facilities are excellent.

After six weeks of recovery from a major surgery, Filip had to mentally and physically be strong to compete. We decided to participate because our flights, hotel and competition entry was paid months in advance. We saw it as a training session and agreed that if it was physically not possible to continue dancing we would withdraw from the competition during the first round. Our only goal was to finish the five dances on Saturday and Sunday.

To our surprise, we could bring quality on the floor. In both competitions we qualified for the second round with 51 markings out of 55. You could not believe how glad we were. In the first competition we became 13th out of 25 couples and the second competition 9th out of 20 couples. Both competitions awarded us more points for the world ranking.

Dit weekend dansten we de 20ste Marseille International Open voor de wereldranking. Twee tornooien in één weekend, georganiseerd door CADM (Club des Amateurs de Danse de Marseille). Dit is het tweede jaar op rij dat we hier deelnemen. De wedstrijd wordt gehouden in “Palais des Sports” en de faciliteiten zijn uitstekend.

Na zes weken herstel van een zware chirurgische ingreep, moest Filip zowel mentaal als fysiek zich heel sterk houden om deel te nemen. We besloten toch naar Marseille af te reizen daar onze vluchten, hotel en inkom reeds maanden vooraf betaald waren. We zagen het als een training sessie en gingen akkoord de competitie af te breken tijdens de eerste ronde indien het fysiek niet mogelijk zou zijn. Ons doel was zowel zaterdag en zondag het in de vijf dansen vol te houden. 

Tot onze verrassing konden we kwaliteit op de vloer brengen. In beide competities kwalificeerden we voor de tweede ronde met 51 crossen uit 55. Je kan je niet voorstellen hoe blij we hier mee waren. Op zaterdag werden we 13de van 25 paren en in de tweede wedstrijd op zondag 9de van 20 paren. Beide wedstrijden gaven ons extra punten ter verbetering van onze wereldranking.

Second round in the Baltic Open Senior I standard, Riga

After a two month break of competitive dancing, we travelled to Riga last weekend for the Baltic Open. A major World Ranking event of three days and more than 2.000 couples. It was our first visit to Latvia. We were lucky with the weather since it was about zero degrees. Normally it should be ten degrees colder this time of the year.

We have to congratulate the organisation because the event halls were heated to perfection. After a warming-up session we danced our first round in a very strong field. Our dancing quality reached our expected level and we made it to the second round. In the second round we tried again but could not go further. Overall a good feeling to be dancing again on a competitive level.

Na een competitieve pauze van twee maand, reisden we naar Riga voor deel te nemen in de Baltic Open. Een groot wereldranking evenement over drie dagen waarbij er meer als 2.000 dansparen ingeschreven zijn. Het was ons eerste bezoek aan Letland. Met temperaturen rond het vriespunt hadden we geluk. Normaal is het hier deze tijd van het jaar ongeveer tien graden kouder. 

We moeten de organisatoren feliciteren met de inrichting van verwarming van de danshallen, het was gewoon de ideale temperatuur. Na het opwarmen en indansen begonnen we aan de eerste ronde in een heel sterk veld. Onze danskwaliteit lag binnen het verwachtingspatroon en we waren doorgeplaatst naar de tweede ronde. Dit was ook onze laatste ronde. In het algemeen hadden we een goed gevoel over ons dansen op een hoog internationaal niveau.

Sad dancing at the Holland Masters WDSF Senior I Standard, Steenwijk

We were registered to enter the WDSF Senior I of the Holland Master last Saturday. After losing our dog on Friday, we considered not to participate. What is the right choice however? Sit home and tub the whole time or try to go on with your daily activities. Sometimes we travel very far for a world ranking competition and now that it is at driving distance, we decided to go ahead.

We don’t even know if our dancing was reaching the standards we would like to achieve. Energy and explosions were missing, the mental and physical strength was weak. Emotions kicked in and arguing was unavoidable. During this competition we were the sad dancers, thinking about our little friend Tommie, who left us the day before.

We waren ingeschreven voor de Holland Master WDSF Senior I Standaard vorige zaterdag. Na onze hond te verliezen op vrijdag, overwogen we niet deel te nemen. Wat is echter de juiste keuze? Thuis zitten en de hele tijd te doemdenken of proberen verder te gaan met onze dagelijkse activiteiten. Soms reizen we heel ver voor wereld ranking competities en nu het op rijafstand was, besloten we toch te gaan. 

We weten zelfs niet of het dansen onze verwachtingen benaderde. Energie en explosiviteit ontbraken, mentaal en fysiek waren we zwak. Emoties liepen heel hoog op en felle discussies werden onvermijdelijk. Tijdens deze competitie waren we de trieste dansers, denkende aan onze kleine vriend Tommie die ons de dag ervoor verliet.

Grand-Prix of the city of Bertrange – WDSF Senior I

It was a very tiring weekend. On Saturday we danced the Antwerp Open in the evening. We left Antwerp (Belgium) at midnight for a drive to Bertrange (Luxembourg) where we had to dance at 10 o’clock in the morning. We arrived at 2:30 at night in the hotel and had to get up at 07:00. We were already in the ballroom at 8:30, ready for the warming-up and a small breakfast. This is the worst timetable you can imagine. We were not the only couple that participated in both competitions, five made this challenging trip during the night.

Surprisingly we even danced better than the evening before. Probably due to the competition routine. You remember well what you could improve from the evening before and apply it a few hours later. It looks like we did not perform well ending in place 13 out of 16 couples but when you look at the World Ranking positions of the top 12, you have peace with it. We even took 19 markings from these world toppers and consider this a victory. After this competition we improved our Senior I ranking position to number 95 in the world. Now we have to drive back home for about four hours.

Het was een vermoeiend weekend. Op zaterdag dansten we ’s avonds de Open Antwerpen. Rond middernacht vertrokken we uit Antwerpen voor onze autorit naar Bertrange in Luxemburg waar we ’s morgens om tien uur moesten dansen. We kwamen aan in het hotel rond 2:30 ’s nachts en de wekker ging af om 7:00 uur. We waren reeds in de competitiehal om 8:30, klaar voor de opwarming en een klein ontbijt. Dit is de slechtste timetable die je kan voorstellen. We dachten dat we het enige paar zouden zijn die deze uitdaging aanging maar vijf koppels hebben deze zware trip aangegaan.

Tot onze verrassing dansten we zelfs beter als de voorgaande avond. Waarschijnlijk vanwege de routine. Je weet nog heel goed wat er voor betering vatbaar was en je kan het toepassen een paar uur later. Het lijkt dat we niet goed gepresteerd hebben maar als je naar de wereld ranking van de top 12 koppels kijkt, hebben we er vrede mee. We namen zelfs 19 crossen af van deze wereldtoppers en zien dit als een overwinning. Na deze competitie verbeterden we onze wereld ranking positie en klommen we naar de 95ste plaats. Nu moeten we nog 3,5 uur naar huis rijden.

Our biggest ballroom competition ever, DanceComp Wuppertal

On Sunday, we danced our biggest competition ever. In the Senior I Standard there were 134 participating couples from 13 different countries. Most of the couples were from Germany, which is a very strong dance country, but some also had to travel from far like Russia and the USA. The event took place in the historical Town Hall of Wuppertal, a fabulous place which feels like out of fairytale. No wonder that this competition is so popular. We added some pictures of the dance hall and the Latin competition.

We were pleased with our dance performance, probably the best competitions we ever danced in a World Ranking event. We left 45 couples behind us which was just a few markings short to qualify for the second round. However we were pleased we could dance here and stood up to a big field. It was also the first time we had to dance with 16 couples on the floor at the same time. A challenge to keep quality when you have to avoid collisions with other couples. It is a learning process and we enjoy it.

Op zondag hebben we onze grootste competitie ooit gedanst. Er waren 134 koppels van 13 verschillende landen ingeschreven in de WDSF Senior I Standaard te Wuppertal. De meeste paren kwamen uit Duitsland, een heel sterk dansland, maar sommigen moesten toch ver reizen zoals de Russen en de Amerikanen. De wedstrijd vond plaatst in het historische stadhuis van Wuppertal, een ongelooflijk balzaal die uit een sprookje lijkt te komen. Het is dan ook niet te verwonderen dat deze wedstrijd zo populair is. We hebben enkele foto’s van het gebouw en de Latin competitie toegevoegd. 

We waren tevreden met onze danskwaliteit, waarschijnlijk de beste wereldranking wedstrijd dat we ooit hebben gedanst. In het eindresultaat lieten we 45 paren achter ons en kwamen enkele crossen tekort voor kwalificatie naar de tweede ronde. We waren echter heel tevreden dat we stand konden houden in zo’n sterk veld. Het was tevens de eerste keer dat we samen met 16 paren tegelijkertijd in één reeks dansten. Een hele uitdaging je kwaliteit en beweging te behouden zonder te botsen. Het was een goed leerproces en we hebben genoten.

WDSF Senior Cup Madrid, Standard Senior I

We entered for the second time a WDSF in Madrid organised in the large Auditorium hotel, an ideal place to participate in a competition. Enough large areas to warm up and practice, you have a bedroom where you can get ready and dressed. Competitions held in a hotel are always comfortable for the dancers.

The Senior Cup WDSF competitions were organised together with the World Championship Senior II Latin and the World Championship Senior III Standard. Needless to say that all top couples were present.

During the national morning events we had a two hour training session. Working on recently discovered technical elements which is not easy to adjust to. What we are currently trying out in our upper body makes our dancing more dynamic but it is not yet under control. This we felt during the competition as soon as we danced on a large floor. We end the competition in place 19 out of 22 couples.

Het was de tweede keer dat we deelnamen aan een WDSF wedstrijd in Madrid, georganiseerd in het grote Auditorium hotel, een ideale plaats voor zo'n evenement. Genoeg grote ruimtes om op te warmen en in te trainen, tevens heb je een hotelkamer voor je make-up aan te brengen en aan te kleden. Competities in een hotel zijn gewoon heel aangenaam voor de dansparen. 

De Senior Cup WDSF competities werden samen met het Wereldkampioenschap Senior II Latin en het Wereldkampioenschap Senior III Standaard georganiseerd. Hierdoor waren er dan ook heel veel top paren aanwezig. 

Tijdens de Nationale wedstrijden in de ochtend hadden wij een twee uur durende training. Werken aan net aangeleerde technische elementen is uitdagend maar niet gemakkelijk. Wat we momenteel aan ons bovenlichaam aanpassen zou ons meer dynamiek tijdens het dansen moeten geven maar we hebben het nog niet onder controle. Dit voelden we onmiddellijk op de grote wedstrijdvloer. We eindigen de competitie op de 19de plaats van 22 paren.

Dancing next to the World Champion at the WDSF Rimini Open Senior I

Until this competition we only saw the reigning World Champions Stefano Bernardini & Stefania Martellini dance in the German Open. Alltough there is an enormous gap in dance quality, we stand next to them ready for the start of the competition.

Italy is an extremely good Ballroom Dancing country and this is clear from the participating couples. Also the World Champions Ten Dance, Christian & Elena Bono as well as the best newcomers of the year Csongor Balogh & Anita Szabo from Hungary and already number four in the world are present.

We knew beforehand that this competition result would be poor but also a good training. Participating in the strongest dance country in the world gives you a challenge. We danced on our level and were not intimidated. The adjudicators gave us 12 markings to go to the second round. The quickstep was our best dance. We end the competition in place 30 out of 33 couples.

On our return flight with Brussels Airlines we could take some pictures of the snow in the Alps. City trips in combination with dancing is always fun and adventurous.

Tot aan deze competitie hadden we enkel de regerende Wereldkampioenen Stefano Bernardini & Stefania Martellini zien dansen in de German Open. Alhoewel er een enorm verschil in kwaliteit is, staan we naast hen klaar voor de start van de wedstrijd.

Italië is een heel sterk land voor Ballroom dansen en dit is onmiddellijk duidelijk als je naar de deelnemende paren kijkt. De Wereldkampioenen Tien dans Christian & Elena Bono zijn ook van de partij en de beste nieuwkomer van het jaar, Csongor Balogh & Anita Szabo uit Hongarije, reeds het nummer vier op de wereldranking is er ook.

We wisten vooraf dat deze wedstrijd ging resulteren in een slechte plaatsing maar ook dat het een goede training ging zijn. Deelnemen in het sterkste dansland ter wereld is een uitdaging. We bereikten het gewenste niveau en werden niet geïntimideerd. De jury gaf ons tevens nog 12 crossen voor de kwalificatie naar de tweede ronde. De quickstep was onze beste dans. We eindigen de competitie in plaats 30 van 33 paren. 

Op de terugvlucht met Brussels Airlines konden we enkele foto's nemen van de sneeuw in de Alpen. City trips in combinatie met dansen is altijd leuk en avontuurlijk.

Our competition report of the Wooden Shoe WDSF Senior I, Klundert

With only one hour drive, is this the only World Ranking competition we have so close to our home. No doubt in our mind to participate. For the first round we assign ourselves some technical focus points. It was possible to execute them in the majority of the five dances. We were a bit disappointed with the Viennese Waltz, Filip’s head was not stable enough and we didn’t dance forward enough. In general we are pleased with how we danced but we want to make more progress. Training sessions will have to be intensified if we want to achieve more.

In the re-dance round we danced at the same level with a better Viennese Waltz. We end the competition in place 18 out of 23 couples. A disappointing result. Several people we know said that we always danced in the stronger heat and that this has affected our ranking. It could be but the bottom line is that we have to increase our quality.

We only planned five competitions in the next four months and we will use the time to work on technique, performance and physical strength. We hope to be a more successful competitor in September. A big thank you to Johan Blind who was kind enough to make a video recording of the first round.

Met enkel een uurtje rijden, is dit de dichtste wereld ranking competitie die we ooit zullen dansen. Geen enkele twijfel dat we hier gingen aan deelnemen. Voor de eerste ronde hadden we ons enkele technische opdrachten opgelegd. We konden we meeste hiervan uitvoeren in het grootste gedeelte van de vijf dansen. We waren wat minder tevreden over de Weense Wals, Filip zijn hoofd was niet volledig stabiel en we dansten niet progressief genoeg. In het algemeen waren we wel tevreden maar willen veel meer vooruitgang boeken. Training sessies zullen worden verzwaard en we verwachten meer te bereiken.

In de re-dance ronde hebben we op hetzelfde niveau gedanst maar met een betere Weense Wals. We eindigen de competitie op plaats 18 van 23, een grote tegenslag. Verschillende toeschouwers waren van mening dat wij in een veel sterkere reeks waren ingedeeld en dat dit ons eindresultaat heeft beïnvloed. In realiteit komt het er echter op neer dat we onze danskwaliteit dienen te verbeteren. 

We hebben slechts vijf competities gepland in de komende vier maanden en kunnen de tijd goed gebruiken om aan onze techniek, dominantie op de vloer en fysieke conditie te werken. We hopen er als betere competitie dansers uit te komen in september. Hartelijk dank aan Johan Blind voor de video opname van onze eerste ronde.

WDSF Open Senior I - Standard in Cambrils, Spain

While I am writing this first part of the report, Kristel is working on her make-up. It takes a bit longer for a girl to do her hair than for a man. This small break before breakfast provides me the opportunity to write a bit of our preparation for such a big international competition.

In the first hour we do our hair and make up. After this we have a long breakfast to relax. It is now 2,5 hours before the start of our first round. We walk from the hotel to the sports Hal with our dance gear. Filip collects our start number. We check out the floor and warming up possibilities. Our warming up and short technical training starts. We get dressed. We are now 30 minutes before the first round. Kristel's parents are already on the main tribune seating area, waiting for the start. A final warming up session and building up the adrenaline. Remember to stay calm on the floor, do not exaggerate, keep it clean. There we go!

We are pleased with our performance because we could apply all technical attention points in our five dances. It was not a 100% but a considerable part of each dance. Maybe due to this the total quality of our dancing was affected but that's part of the learning process. We were not through to the next round and end the competition in place 10 out of 12 couples. This is a disappointing because we realised our own technical goals in Cambrils. Next time better, never give up.

Terwijl ik dit eerste deel van het verslag schrijf is Kristel haar make-up aan het afwerken. Dat duurt toch wel wat langer voor een vrouw dan bij een man. Deze kleine rustperiode voor het ontbijt geeft mij de mogelijkheid iets te schrijven over de voorbereidingsfase van een grote buitenlandse wedstrijd.

Tijdens het eerste uur doen me onze make-up en haar. Hierna een ontspannend ontbijt. Het is nu 2,5 uur voor de start van onze eerste ronde. We wandelen van het hotel naar de sporthal met onze dansuitrusting. Filip haalt het startnummer op. Wij kijken na hoe de vloer er bij ligt en waar we kunnen opwarmen. Onze warming up en technische herhaling start. We kleden ons om. Het is nu 30 minuten voor de start. Kristel's ouders wachten ongeduldig op de hoofdtribune. Nog even de spieren warm houden en de adrenaline opbouwen. Onthoud kalm te blijven op de vloer, niet overdrijven en denk er aan strak te dansen. Daar gaan we!

We zijn blij met onze prestatie want we pasten al onze vooropgestelde technische elementen toe. Misschien niet voor 100% maar een groot deel van elke dans. Misschien werd hierdoor de totale kwaliteit wat aangetast maar dat maakt deel uit van het leerproces. We plaatsten ons niet voor de finale en eindigen de competitie in plaats 10 van 12 paren. Dit is een teleurstelling daar we onze technische doel wel bereikt hebben in Cambrils. Volgende keer beter, nooit opgeven.

Dancing in Plaza de Toros or La Malagueta, Malaga

Let us start to inform you that we don't like bull fighting and that we have never gone to such an event. The architecture of this stadium in Malaga is however a piece of art. It was already constructed in 1876 and has a capacity of about 9.000 spectators. Around the Plaza de Toros you see they added modern elements like pictures, art and themed glass panels. The name of the arena is the same as the beach which is located nearby, about 200m.

Bull fighting arenas are becoming popular in the dance world. In 2013 the bull ring of Sevilla was used by "SoYou Think You Can Dance" for the last qualification round before the live TV shows. The candidates had to study flamenco and perform it. A pity they did not select the Paso Doble, this would have been better in such a stadium.

The biggest dance event ever held in a bull fighting arena was in Colombia during the World Games. The city of Cali hosted this major event and the arena which could hold 17.000 people was sold out. A year after the Cali World Games all Ballroom Dancers who competed there are still impressed and claim this was the most special tournament they ever danced.

Laat ons beginnen met de volgende verklaring: wij houden niet van stierenvechten en zijn nog nooit naar zo'n evenement geweest. De architectuur van het stieren stadium in Malaga is echter kunst. De bouwwerken werden voltooid in 1876 en het heeft een capaciteit van ongeveer 9.000 toeschouwers. Rond de Plaza de Toros vind je enkele moderne elementen zoals foto's, kunst en glazen panelen rondom het thema stierenvechten.

Stierenvechten arena's worden ook populair in de danswereld. In 2013 werd in de stierenring van Sevilla de laatste kwalificatieronde voor de live uitzendingen van "So You Think You Can Dance" gehouden. De deelnemers leerden de Flamenco en de beste performers gingen door. Spijtig dat men niet koos voor de Paso Doble, een meer gepaste keuze bij dit stadium. 

Het grootste dansevenement ooit in een arena was in Colombia tijdens de World Games. De arena van Cali met meer als 17.00 toeschouwers was uitverkocht. Een jaar na de World Games praten de dansers nog steeds over deze bijzondere plaats. Voor velen was dit een uniek en één van de meest gewaardeerde tornooien waar ze ooit in deelgenomen hebben.

WDSF Senior I Standard – Dance Sport Cup Malta

Last weekend we were in Malta for our third World Ranking competition, only 7 couples registered so it was a direct final. The participants came from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Belgium. From the couples who already had 6 WDSF results, the lowest ranked couple was number 67 in the world. The others were higher. On paper we should end on the 7th place, which also materialised.

We had to do all five dances in a row and this was hard. Nevertheless we were pleased with our dancing and won the English Waltz from number 67 in the world. We end in 7th place overall but the adjudicators did not put us last each time.

These were the placings we received:
- 1 third place
- 2 fourth places
- 9 fifth places
- 10 sixth places
 - 23 seventh places

After this competition we enter the top 200 of the WDSF World Ranking at place 193. It will take a while to improve this position because our next international tournament will be in Cambrils (Spain) on 19 April.

Vorig weekend waren we in Malta voor ons derde wereldranking tornooi, slecht 7 paren schreven zich in dus was het een rechtstreekse finale. De deelnemende paren kwamen van Duitsland, Italië, Slovakije en België. Van alle paren die reeds 6 ranking competities gedanst hadden was het laagst gerangschikte koppel nummer 67 in de wereld. Op papier gingen we dus 7de worden en dit gebeurde dan ook. 

We dienden alle vijf dansen na elkaar te dansen en dit was hard. Niettegenstaande waren we tevreden met onze kwaliteit en wonnen we de Engelse Wals van het nummer 67 van de wereld. In de totale uitslag werden we 7de maar de jury plaatste ons niet altijd laatste. 

Dit waren onze plaatsingen: 
- 1 derde plaats 
- 2 vierde plaatse 
- 9 vijfde plaatsen 
- 10 zesde plaatsen 
- 23 zevende plaatsen 

 Na deze wedstrijd komen we de top 200 van de WDSF wereldranking binnen op plaats 193. Het zal nu wel een tijdje duren vooraleer we deze positie kunnen verbeteren want ons volgend internationaal tornooi is in Cambrils (Spanje) op 19 april.
