This temple is a very special place. It is the first time we are confronted with a temple that is not focussing on a religious stream but at specific skills which could bring added value to the person praying at this location. The most important Man Mo Temple of Hong Kong was built in 1848 and is located at Hollywood Road.
The temple houses two Gods, one to increase your literature skills (Man) and the other is specialised in martial arts or war (Mo) but are these skills such a good combination? In the old China yes, the men who had the best of these skills could work for the Emperor. People came here to become the Chinese civil servants of the 19th century.
The circular cones at the ceiling are candles visitors buy to worship the Gods. They leave an intense burning smell behind. Chinese people like their future to be forecasted, that’s why you regularly receive fortune cookies in restaurants. Here is one of the most important temples fortune-tellers make a business of it. We as a rationally thinking couple don’t believe in these predictions so we showed respect but didn’t make use of the oracle services.
