The famous Aquarium of the Berlin Zoo

It is possible to visit the Aquarium separately from the Zoo. In this case you pay a reduced fee. The building itself is interesting with stained glass on the staircases and open Koi ponds. You would think that an aquarium only has fish tanks available but here they have a special collection of plants, amphibians and reptiles. We are not such fans of giant snakes but they are available on the first floor next to the interior tropical garden that houses small size crocodiles.

De Zoo van Berlijn biedt gasten de mogelijkheid het Aquarium te bezoeken los van de rest van de dierentuin. Je betaalt dan een gereduceerde prijs. Het gebouw zelf is zeer interessant met een siertrap waarlangs brandglas is verwerkt. Bij de ingang is er ook een open Kooi vijvertje. Men denkt dat een Aquarium enkel vistanks tentoonstelt maar hier in Berlijn, heeft men ook een grote collectie planten, amfibieën en reptielen. We zijn geen fans van reusachtige slangen maar ze hebben ze hier beschikbaar op hetzelfde verdiep als de tropische binnentuin, het leefterrein van kleine krokodillen..

New life and the loss of Panda Bao Bao at the Zoo of Berlin

One of the first impressions we got at the Zoo of Berlin was, the animal caretakers are motivated and have a heart for animals. You see it immediately. We are sure that many of you remember the birth of the Polar Bear Knut who was raised by people. Unfortunately he died after four years and became an icon for the city of Berlin. Also the Giant Panda Bao Bao died this year at the age of 34. Luckily for the Zoo there were many new births this year but we can imagine that the loss of two such important animals is extremely hard.

The Zoo is now 100 years old and the infrastructure is great, they must continuously invest to achieve these animal settings. The Zoo entrance next to the aquarium is in the shape of a Chinese gate. We hope you like our pictures and when you are in Berlin, you decide to visit the Zoo, your entrance fee goes to a good cause in taking care of these wonderful animals.

Bij ons bezoek aan de Zoo van Berlijn, zagen we onmiddellijk dat de dierenverzorgers gemotiveerde hard werkende mensen zijn met een groot hart voor dieren. We zijn er zeker van dat velen van jullie zich de geboorte van Knut de ijsbeer herinneren. Hij werd grootgebracht door een verzorger nadat zijn moeder hem had verstoten. Spijtig genoeg stierf hij op de leeftijd van 4 jaar en werd hij een icoon voor de stad Berlijn. Ook de Reuzenpanda Bao Bao stierf dit jaar in augustus en werd 34 jaar. Gelukkig voor de zoo waren er vele nieuwe geboortes maar we kunnen ons voorstellen dat het verlies van twee zo’n belangrijke dieren zeer zwaar is. 

De Zoo is nu 100 jaar oud en de infrastructuur uitstekend, om deze dierenhuisvesting te verwezenlijken moet men voortdurend investeren. De inkom naast het Aquarium is in de vorm van een Chinese poort. We hopen dat je onze foto’s leuk vindt en dat je de zoo gaat bezoeken als je in Berlijn komt. Je inkombijdrage gaat naar een goed doel, de verzorging van de dieren..
