Delft is a charming Dutch University town. The TU Delft is known internationally. Many students live in rooms of houses near the canals. The students have to be careful not to fall into the water with their bikes when retuning from party evenings. The canals and the water give the town a special character. I would however be worried for my house because sometimes the water is very close to entering uninvited into your living room. Holland lives with water.

ReplyDeletegreat topic for a blog entry! indeed when we live here, we often forget how unique this is:-)I have a "gracht" in front of my home too...with ducks, grey herons, fishes and other street/gracht-pets:-)
ReplyDelete...and to add to your final sentence: Holland lives with water...under the water level!
I think this is the best way to explore most of Europe...river or canal cruise!

Then, you hate and love the water alternately.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Anna Scherling and I work for Sasaki Associates, a multi-disciplinary design firm in Boston. I'm assisting the curators of a report titled "Preparing for the Rising Tides 2: Living with Water" that is being co-authored by the non-profit group The Boston Harbor Association (TBHA). I would like to ask your permission to use the third photo in this post as part of the report.
ReplyDeleteThis report is the second in TBHA’s "Preparing for the Rising Tide" series. For the series, TBHA has partnered with recognized content experts—in this case Sasaki Associates—to offer policy recommendations to help Boston prepare for increased coastal flooding. "Preparing for the Rising Tide" (2013) provided an initial assessment of Boston’s vulnerability to coastal flooding due to storm surges and sea level rise.
Today, "Preparing for the Rising Tides 2" focuses on the concept of “Living with Water” flood management. The report will provide twelve case studies describing how “Living with Water” strategies are being used by cities around the world to decrease their potential flood damage without losing the vibrancy and livability of their communities. The report is due to release this month, and will live online with TBHA and Sasaki in PDF form.
If you are interested in allowing us to use the image, please contact me at ascherling(at)sasaki(dot)com by the end of this week, Friday, July 18. Thank you so much for your consideration! Looking forward to hearing from you.
