Strategic location for the Aguas Calientes souvenir market

The location of the local souvenir market of Aguas Calientes could not be better. It is directly in front of the train station and you have to pass through it when you arrive in or leave the town. Every tourist is obliged to walk on the market at least two times during his stay in town.

The pictures below give an impression of what you can buy here: masks, plates, clothing, silver jewelry, handbags, chess boards and pieces, carpets, hats and a lot more. We each bought a T-shirt from Machu Picchu and two hiking jackets with many pockets. Like most places in Peru, you also see street dogs on the market.

An outdoor Spa Center, the Hot Springs in Aguas Calientes

The name of the city says it all, Aguas Calientes translates into hot water, the town of the hot springs. Maybe this is the reason why you see so many massage salons, above shops, above restaurants, almost everywhere. This is the spa town.

To reach the outdoor hot springs, you need to make a long walk uphill alongside a creek. The temperature of the water is extremely high, between 38 and 46 degrees Celsius. 46 degrees would be too hot for us. In Japan we tried the Onsen hot springs of around 43 degrees. This was our limit. Very hard to enter the water.

We enjoyed the walk with benches, nice trees, flowers and at the end the Spa complex. The ponds look like small swimming pools, the separation walls hold graffiti and the bar is decorated with wooden furniture and Peruvian paintings. When we go back to Aguas Calientes we will bring a swim suit. We didn’t think of this and travelled only with hand luggage in this region.

The Inkaterra group has several hotels which are located in areas to visit the nature of Peru. The main goal is the preserve Peru’s nature and the share it with travelers from all over the world. The El Mapi Hotel is a modern and luxurious. It is built out of recycled and restored materials, in line with the vision of the Inkaterra group. Rooms are spacious and have all comfort, there is however no climate control.

The hotel has a restaurant with good food and an excellent wine card. At the bar we were welcomed with a typical Pisco Sour. The hotel has received many awards and has now already two years in a row the Certificate of Excellence by Tripadvisor. When we go back to Machu Picchu, we would stay in the same hotel.
