Fighting for water at the Pucara Inca ruin

Water makes live possible hundreds kilometers away from civilisation. At this place, on an altitude of 2.600 meters, you find the Pucara spring. It was hidden between the Andes mountains and used by Inca's in the 12th century. Water was power and this was a military post of the Inca Empire.

Today, nine centuries later there are still some farmers living here. It takes them about three hours to drive to Arica where the nearest schools and grocery shops are. We cannot imagine living in these circumstances.

Water maakt het leven mogelijk honderden kilometers verwijderd van de civilisatie. Op deze plaats, op een hoogte van 2.600 meter, vind je de Pucara bron. Deze ligt verbogen tussen het Andes gebergte en werd gevonden door de Inca's in de 12de eeuw. Water stond gelijk aan macht en dit was een militaire voorpost van het Inca Rijk. 

Vandaag, negen eeuwen later leven er hier nog een handvol boeren. Met de auto is het drie uur rijden naar de dichtstbijzijnde school en winkel. We kunnen ons niet voorstellen in zo'n omstandigheden te leven.

The wonder of nature at Luca National Park, Chile

We have seen many National Parks in the USA and fabulous nature all over the world. Luca National Park is enormous and we didn't have any expectations. Nature surprised us, a place we never heard of before, blew us away. Luca National Park must be one of the most impressive nature reserves in the world and almost no one in Europe has heard about it. How is this possible?

The Andes mountain region at Luca National Park is beautiful but you have to be careful of the height. You start your trip at sea level in Arica and within a few hours you are 4.600 meters high. Some people in the bus needed additional oxygen and were feeling unwell. People in good physical health should not fear anything when they are cautious. Remain calm and don't start running when getting out of your vehicle.

The pictures say it all. What is there to see? Well next to the traffic between Chile and Bolivia with many hairpin curves: mountains, deserts, volcanoes, ice, snow, lakes and incredible landscapes. You also see animals like many types of birds, pecuñas and Caviscaya rabbits. Overall an amazing day trip.

Take into account that the only road between Bolivia and the Pacific Ocean runs through Luca National Park. As a consequence there are many trucks passing by so please be careful when crossing the road. Some people focus so much on the exceptional landscape that they don't see the approaching traffic.

We hebben reeds vele Nationale Parken in de VS en fantastische natuur wereldwijd gezien. Luca National Park is enorm groot en we hadden geen verwachtingen. De natuur verraste ons, een plaats waarvan we nog nooit hadden gehoord, beroerde ons. Luca National Park is één van de indrukwekkendste natuurgebieden ter wereld en bijna niemand in Europa heeft hier weet van. Hoe is dit mogelijk?

Het Andes gebergte in deze regio is prachtig maar let op voor de hoogte. Je vangt je trip aan op zeeniveau in Arica en een paar uur later ben je op een hoogte van 4.600 meter. Sommige bezoekers voelen zich onwel of hebben extra zuurstof nodig. Mensen in goede conditie en gezondheid hoeven niets te vrezen maar opletten is steeds noodzakelijk. Blijf kalm en ga niet lopen als je uit de auto stapt.

De foto's vertellen je alles. Wat is er te zien? Wel naast het verkeer met de vele haarspeldbochten: bergen, woestijnen, vulkanen, ijs, sneeuw, meren en ongelooflijke landschappen. Je komt er ook dieren tegen zoals vele soorten vogels, pecuñas en Caviscaya konijnen. Een adembenemende dagexcursie. 

Hou er rekening mee dat de enige weg tussen Bolivia en de Stille Oceaan door Luca National loopt. Als gevolg rijden hier heel veel vrachtwagens dus wees zeer voorzichtig als je de straat oversteekt. Sommige mensen zijn zo aangetrokken door het landschap dat ze het aankomend verkeer niet zien.

Impressive agricultural terraces of the Sacred Valley

How difficult it must be to grow crop and work on your farm land if it is located on a mountain slope. The Inca's were masters of irrigation and optimal use of mountain slopes for agricultural purposes. They first ensured the location and orientation towards the sun was optimal. Only in the right direction, the terraces were constructed.

Each terrace contains several layers of soil. The front stone wall of each level holds the terrace in place. The layers themselves contain combinations of rocks, alternatively hard and soft components. It is constructed in this way to increase the strenght of the terraces but also to force slow movement of water from the surface of the terrace to the lowest soil layer of the same terrace. The remaining water is reused for the lower terraces until it is completely consumed. Inca's were masters of irrigation.

Let us take some time to enjoy the views of the Sacred Valley with its amazing farming land. On the pictures it is hard to grasp the magnitude of these fields but the following statements will provide you an idea: altitude above 4.000 metres, the height of each terrace is 4 to 5 metres, it is more than 10 metres wide and the lenght is hard to judge but a few hundred metres. This was all maintained and built by hand.

Hoe moeilijk moet het zijn gewassen te kweken en landbouwgrond te bewerken tegen een bergwand? De Inka's waren meesters in irrigatie en het optimale gebruik van hellingen voor landbouwactiviteiten. De eerste voorwaarde was de oriëntatie ten opzichte van de zon, dit diende te worden gemaximaliseerd. Eens de juiste richting bepaald legde men de terrassen aan.

Ieder terras is opgebouwd uit verschillende grondlagen. Ze worden samen gehouden door een stevige stenen voormuur. De lagen bestaan uit rotsen en stenen, afwisselend harde en zachte grond. Dit maakt de volledige constructie sterker en het water wordt verplicht langzaam door te sijpelen bij iedere hardere laag. Het niet verbruikte water wordt gerecycled bij het lager gelegen terras. Dit is een sterk staaltje irrigatietechniek. 

Laat ons een moment de tijd nemen van dit prachtige landschap en de Heilige Vallei te genieten. Op de foto's is het soms moeilijk de grootsheid waar te nemen maar de volgende informatie helpt u een idee te vormen: we zitten op een hoogte boven de 4.000 meter, iedere terras is 4 tot 5 meter hoog en ongeveer 10 meter breed, de lengte is hard in te schatten maar is verschillende honderden meters lang. Dit alles werd met de hand gebouwd en bewerkt.

Views over the Urubamba or Sacred Valley of the Inca's

Down below between the green mountain ranges of the Andes, you see a little village. It is located next to the Urubamba River or the Sacred River, from there the name of the valley is derived. This is one of the most fertile areas of the region and people have been living here for more than six centuries. The houses however still look very primitive.

From our position we just had perfect views of the Sacred Valley. Looking to the horizon, the green lower Andes range makes place for higher mountains which are covered in snow. It was a bit cloudy but the ice was clearly visible. Before we continue our trip we took a moment to admire a small three wheeler car. How funny, could you imagine such a car on the European roads?

Ver beneden tussen de groene bergketens van de Andes zie je een klein dorpje. Het is gebouwd nabij de Urubamba Rivier of de Heilige Rivier, van daar komt ook de naam van de vallei. Het zijn de vruchtbaarste gronden uit de regio en mensen wonen hier reeds meer dan 6 eeuwen. De huizen lijken echter nog heel primitief. 

Van waar wij stonden hadden een perfect zicht over de Heilige Vallei. Als je naar de horizon kijkt zie je de groene lagere Andes versmallen en plaats maken voor hoge bergen die bedekt zijn met sneeuw. Het was er bewolkt maar het witte ijs was duidelijk zichtbaar. Voor dat we met onze trip verder gingen stopten we nog even om een kleine driewieler wagen te bewonderen. Wat leuk, zou je zo'n auto kunnen voorstellen op de Europese wegen?
