Geoglyphs as communication tool in the desert, Arica

Geoglyphs are signs carved into mountains which carry a message for people passing by. It was a way of communication in South Peru and North Chile between 3.000 and 2.000 years ago. It is amazing that these symbols are still there.

There are many theories of the story behind the geoglyphs. Some think it is linked to astronomy, you often see carvings of animals, others believe it were just market signs. Some of the symbols on our pictures are more than 80 meters long. We can recognise birds, men and dogs. It was still early in the morning when we took these pictures of the geoglyphs and the moon.

Geoglyphs zijn ingekerfde tekeningen op bergen die een boodschap uitbeelden voor voorbijgangers. Het was een communicatie wijze in zuid Peru en Noord Chile ongeveer 2.000 tot 3.000 jaar geleden. Het is ongelooflijk dat deze symbolen nog steeds bestaan. 

Er zijn vele theorieën achter deze tekeningen. Sommigen denken dat het in verband staat met astrologie, je ziet regelmatig beeltenissen van dieren, andere zien er dagelijkse boodschappen in zoals een markt. Sommige tekeningen zijn 80 meter lang. We herkenden vogels, mensen en honden. Het was nog vroeg in de ochtend toen we deze foto's trokken van de Geoglyphs en de maan.

The driest desert in the world, Candelabro valley desert, Chile

Most deserts are located just above sea level and some even below it. The Candelabro desert is not only exceptional by being the driest in the world, it is also located on an altitude of 2.500 meters. It gets its name from the chandelier shaped cactuses which grow about 8mm a year. It is the only place in the world where you can find these plants. The largest ones are about 200 years old and they blossom once every 4 years for one day. You have to be lucky to see this.

De meeste woestijnen liggen juist boven de zeespiegel en sommigen zelfs er onder. De Candelabro woestijn is niet alleen bijzonder daar het de droogste woestijn ter wereld is maar hij ligt ook op een hoogte van 2.500m. Zijn naam werd afgeleid uit de kandelaar vorm van de cactussen. Deze cactusbomen groeien ongeveer 8mm per jaar, de grootste zijn reeds 20 jaar oud. Eens iedere vier jaar bloeien deze met één enkele bloem voor slechts één dag. Je moet geluk hebben dit mee te mogen maken.

Fighting for water at the Pucara Inca ruin

Water makes live possible hundreds kilometers away from civilisation. At this place, on an altitude of 2.600 meters, you find the Pucara spring. It was hidden between the Andes mountains and used by Inca's in the 12th century. Water was power and this was a military post of the Inca Empire.

Today, nine centuries later there are still some farmers living here. It takes them about three hours to drive to Arica where the nearest schools and grocery shops are. We cannot imagine living in these circumstances.

Water maakt het leven mogelijk honderden kilometers verwijderd van de civilisatie. Op deze plaats, op een hoogte van 2.600 meter, vind je de Pucara bron. Deze ligt verbogen tussen het Andes gebergte en werd gevonden door de Inca's in de 12de eeuw. Water stond gelijk aan macht en dit was een militaire voorpost van het Inca Rijk. 

Vandaag, negen eeuwen later leven er hier nog een handvol boeren. Met de auto is het drie uur rijden naar de dichtstbijzijnde school en winkel. We kunnen ons niet voorstellen in zo'n omstandigheden te leven.

Poconchile village and cemetery, a green valley in the desert

It is written with white stones on the mountain slope, welcome to Poconchile village. With this message the small community is greeting its visitors who stop for a refreshment or some food. From the higher roads you see clearly the green oasis of the Poconchile valey.

The church of this small village was destroyed by an earthquake and is currently being rebuild. This is a very long process. The most interesting is the cemetery. There are almost no tombstones and most of the graves are marked with a wooden cross. Even though this is a very dry region you see lots of flowers. At the back of the cemetery you find the oldest graves.

Het staat met witte stenen geschreven op de berghelling, welkom in Poconchile. Met deze boodschap groet de kleine gemeenschap bezoekers die stoppen voor een drankje of wat eten. Van op de hoger gelegen wegen zie je duidelijk de groene oase van het Poconchile dorp. 

Hun kerk werd vernietigd door een aardbeving en wordt momenteel herbouwd. Dit is een langdurig proces. Het meest interessante was het kerkhof. Er zijn bijna geen zerken en de meeste graven worden gemarkeerd met een houten kruis. Niet tegenstaande het een droog gebied is zie je hier veel bloemenkransen. Achterin op het kerkhof liggen de oudste graven.
