Yildiz Park in the spring, a hill full of tulips, Istanbul

It is always very busy in Yildiz Park which is located between the districts of Besiktas and Ortakoy, near the banks of the Bosporus in front of Ciragan Palace. The park is accessible by car but most people walk.

The locals from Istanbul come here to pick-nick and to enjoy the wonderful tulips. Everywhere you see wild dogs, the city registers them by a chip in their ear. It is a challenging climb but at the top of the park there is a nice terrace where drinks are served.

Newly wed couples come to this park to take pictures. We saw a tourist also taking a picture of an extremely beautiful bride in a blue gown. Her husband attacked the tourist. Some of the young Turkish men can't control their temper and act like fools. Luckily most of them use their brains before acting.

We descended the park on the side of Ortakoy where we had a good view on the first Bosporus Bridge connecting the European part of Istanbul with Asia. A very beautiful park to escape the busy city and find some shelter in the shade on hot summer days.

Het is altijd druk in het Yildiz Park gelegen tussen de wijken Besiktas en Ortakoy aan de oever van de Bosporus voor het Ciragan Paleis. Het park is toegankelijk per auto maar de meeste mensen wandelen.

De lokale bevolking komt hier voor een picknick en om te genieten van de mooie tulpen. Overal zijn er wilde honden, de stad registreert deze met een chip in hun oor. Het is een uitdagende klim, maar eens de top bereikt, kan je genieten van een drankje op het terras. 

Koppels komen hier hun huwelijksfoto's maken. We zagen een toerist die een foto maakte van een ongelooflijk mooie bruid in een blauwe jurk. Haar man viel de toerist echter fysiek aan. Sommige jonge Turken kunnen hun opvliegendheid niet controleren en gedragen zich als volslagen idioten. Gelukkig is dit een minderheid en gebruiken anderen hun hersenen wel. 

We liepen terug naar beneden via Ortakoy waar je een goed zicht had op de eerste Bosporus brug die het Europese gedeelte van Istanboel verbindt met Azië. Een heel mooi park om te ontsnappen aan de drukte van de stad. Je kan hier ook in de schaduw schuilen tegen de brandende zomerzon..

Ciragan Palace became a Kempinski five star hotel, Istanbul

This Kempinski hotel at the Bosporus is extraordinary. We always try to visit exclusive hotels to see the architecture and interior. When the restaurant has a good reputation, we also dine in these hotels. The price quality of these restaurants is most of the time surprisingly good. Since our visit was during the afternoon, we enjoyed a coffee and a beer in one of the lounges. It was expensive but well served with salty snacks and chocolates. We walked around in the hotel and gardens and see this a bit like entering a museum building. The entrance fee is in fact charged via your drink but there is no obligation to consume something, it is your own choice.

The Cirigan Palace was built for Sultan Abdulaziz in 1867. Only the exterior was out of marble, the interior out of more fragile materials like wood. The Sultan only lived here a few years. A few decades later it became the seat of the parliament but in 1910 the palace burned down. It was only rebuilt in 1991. Can you imagine such a beautiful building being ruined for more than 80 years? It is the sad truth of Istanbul; there are other but smaller palaces on the banks of the Bosporus which are deserted and in a poor state. Luckily the Kempinski group maintains it in its glory.

Het Kempinski hotel aan de Bosporus is buitengewoon. We proberen altijd exclusieve hotels te bezoeken om de architectuur en het interieur te bewonderen. Als het restaurant een goede reputatie heeft eten we regelmatig in zo'n hotels. De prijs kwaliteit verhouding is meestal verrassend goed. Daar we dit hotel bezochten in de namiddag besloten we in de lounge een koffie en biertje te consumeren. Het was duur maar keurig opgediend met zoutjes en chocolade. We wandelden in het hotel en de tuinen en zien dit een beetje als een museum bezoek. Ons entreegeld is in feite een deel van de prijs voor de drankjes, maar er is absoluut geen verplichting hier iets te drinken of te eten. 

Het Cirigan Paleis werd gebouwd voor Sultan Abdulaziz in 1867. Enkel de buitenzijde was van marmer, de binnenkant bestond uit fragieler materiaal zoals hout. De Sultan leefde slechts enkele jaren in het paleis. Een paar tientallen jaren later werd het de zetel van het parlement. In 1910 werd het vernietigd door een brand. Kan je het voorstellen dat zo'n mooi gebouw meer als 80 jaar leegstaat? Het is de droevige realiteit van Istanboel, er zijn nu ook nog kleinere paleizen op de oever van de Bosporus die er verlaten bij staan en in zeer slechte staat. Gelukkig onderhoudt de Kempinski Groep dit paleis in zijn volle glorie..

Where to buy tickets for a boat trip on the Bosphorus, Istanbul?

A boat trip on the Bosphorus is something you have to do when you are in Istanbul. It is however very popular so we recommend taking the boat as early as possible in the morning when it is not too crowded. You can buy tickets all over the city. At the main attractions of Istanbul, local sales men approach you with leaflets and so called promotion prices. We recommend you to buy your tickets directly at the Galata Bridge on the Eminönü Square. This is also one of the locations where the boats depart. It could be about half the price.

We selected “Tur Yol” as boat company and they charge 15 Turkish Lira (about 7 euro) for a 1,5 hour trip. We assure you this is long enough. The river cruise takes you up to the second Bosphorus Bridge and back to your departing point. The most important sites you see during the trip are: Galata Tower, New Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Cirağan Palace or the Kempinsky Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, Rumeli Fortress, Kuleli Military School, Beylerbeyi Palace and Maiden’s Tower. A lot to see in a relaxing cruise.

By the way, did you know that Istanbul is also a major Sea Cruise port? When we were there we saw the MSC Lirica, a ship from Pullman, from Costa, from the German company Mein Schiff and one from Aida. The Bosphorus is the crossing point from the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea and Istanbul is the only city in the world than is split over two continents, Europe and Asia.

Een boottocht op de Bosporus is iets dat je niet mag missen bij een bezoek aan Istanboel. Het is echter zo populair dat we aanraden de boottocht zo vroeg mogelijk te maken in de ochtend wanneer er niet teveel passagiers zijn. Overal in de stad worden er tickets aangeboden. Aan de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden van Istanboel staan venters tickets aan de man te brengen met folders en zogenaamde promotieprijzen. We raden je aan je kaartjes te kopen aan de Galatabrug op het Eminönü plein. Dit is ook de een plaats waar de boten uitvaren. Het kan zijn dat je de helft van de prijs betaald. 

We kozen voor “Tur Yol” als rederij en zij vroegen 15 Turkse Lira, ongeveer 7 euro, voor een boottocht van 1,5 uur. We verzekeren je dat dit lang genoeg is. De riviertocht brengt je tot aan de tweede Bosporusbrug en terug naar de startplaats. De belangrijkste sites die je onderweg ziet zijn: Galatatoren, Nieuwe Moskee, Dolmabahçe Paleis, Ortaköy Moskee, Cirağan Paleis of het Kempinsky Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, Rumeli burcht, Kuleli Militaire school, Beylerbeyi Paleis en de Maiden’s toren. Je ziet dus veel op een ontspannende boottocht. 

Wist je trouwens dat Istanboel ook een grote zeehaven is? Toen we er waren hebben we zee cruiseschepen gezien van MSC, Pullman, Costa, Mein Schiff en Aida. De Bosporus is de enige doorgang van de Middellandse Zee naar de Zwarte Zee en de stad Istanboel ligt als enige stad ter wereld op twee continenten, Azie en Europa..
