Views from the Chorrillos Cliffs of Miraflores and Lovers Park, Lima

The steep cliffs of Chorrillos and the views on Miraflores and the Pacific Ocean were one of the first pictures we saw of Lima on the internet. We were impressed and had to see it ourselves. Looking straight ahead you face the modern buildings of Miraflores, looking down the ocean and traffic making its way around this huge metro pole. On one of the cliffs in front of us you see a tall lighted cross, an expression of devotion to Jesus. Peru is a very religious country.

The place we are at is called Lovers Park and opened for the public in 1993 on Valentine Day. The most famous piece of art is of a couple kissing, many visitors find inspiration in this and also kiss each other. I was too busy playing with my camera, lol. We were however attracted towards a replica of the Gaudi bench from Barcelona. The local artist used a similar style but different shape and size. We liked the concept.

With this highlight of Lima, we are saying goodbye to Peru. It was a great adventure and we hope you enjoyed our Peru articles. Our next stop in South America will be Buenos Aires, we catch our flight early in the morning.

De steile Chorrillos Kliffen met zicht op Miraflores en de Stille Oceaan, waren één van de eerste Lima foto's die we aantroffen op het internet. Onder de indruk besloten we zeker deze plaats te bezoeken. Als je recht voor je uit kijkt zie je het moderne Miraflores, naar beneden kijkende de oceaan en het drukke verkeer dat zich een weg baant rond de enorme metropool. Op één van de bergen voor ons staat een heel hoog verlicht kruis ter ere van Jezus. Peru is een heel gelovig land.

De locatie waar we staan heet Lovers Park en opende voor het publiek op Valentijn in 1993. Het bekendste kunstwerk is van een zoenend koppel, vele bezoekers vinden hierin inspiratie en kussen elkaar ook. Ik had hier niet aan gedacht en speelde verder met mijn fototoestel, lol. We werden echter aangetrokken tot een replica van de Gaudi bank uit Barcelona. De lokale kunstenaar gebruikte een gelijkaardige stijl maar met verschillende vorm en grootte. We hielden hier wel van. 

Met dit hoogtepunt uit Lima nemen we afscheid van Peru. Het was een prachtig avontuur en we hopen dat je van onze Peru artikelen hebt genoten. Onze volgende stop in Zuid-Amerika is Buenos Aires, we nemen onze vlucht vroeg in de ochtend.

The legend of Rosh Hanikra and its underground caves

Rosh Hanikra is the most northern place in Israel. It is a rock containing underground caves through which the waves of the Mediterranean Sea have free play. To reach the caves you have to take the steepest cable car in the world. Inside the caves the sun light and water coloured the stones in green and red. Local people say if you listen very carefully you hear the whispers of a young girl between the rocks. Centuries ago, she was brought to Mesopotamia to get married to an old man against her will. At Rosh Hanikra she escaped and jumped from the cliff, her body was never found but sometimes people still hear her voice. These mountains are the actual border between Lebanon and Israel but the frontier is closed, the countries are at war. Underneath these mountains you find the remains of a railway and tunnels used during World War II to transport soldiers from Asia and Africa to fight in Europe. When trains came back, they sometimes brought Jews to Israel escaping from the Nazis. Now the tunnels are filled with bricks and concrete so that also on this side the border is now closed for more than 60 years. It is amazing how interesting a piece of rock like Rosh Hanikra can be.

Rosh Hanikra is de meest noordelijke plaats van Israël. De rots bevat ondergrondse grotten waar de golven van de Middellandse Zee vrij spel in hebben. Om de grotten te bezoeken moet je de steilste kabelbaan uit de wereld nemen. Het zonlicht en het beukende water hebben de grotstenen groen en rood gekleurd. De lokale mensen geloven als je hier goed luistert, het fluisteren van een jonge vrouw kan horen. Eeuwen geleden werd ze tegen haar wil meegenomen om te trouwen met een oude man uit Mesopotamië. Aan Rosh Hanikra heeft ze zich losgerukt en van de kliffen gesprongen. Haar lichaam werd nooit teruggevonden maar soms hoor je nog haar stem. Deze bergen zijn ook de fysieke grens tussen Libanon en Israël maar deze is gesloten daar beide landen in oorlog met elkaar zijn. Onder deze bergen vind je een spoorweg die werd gebruikt in WOII om soldaten van Azië en Afrika te vervoeren naar Europa om daar te vechten. Wanneer de treinen terugkwamen brachten ze soms Joden mee die ontsnapten aan de Nazis. Nu zijn de tunnels dichtgemaakt met stenen en beton zodat ook deze grensovergang gesloten is sinds meer dan 60 jaar. Het is verbazingwekkend hoe interessant een rots zoals Rosh Hanikra kan zijn..
