Legends and luxury in the Pera Palace Hotel, Istanbul

The Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul has been built in 1892. It was the first public building in the Ottoman Empire that had electricity. The main target customers for the hotel were the people travelling on the Orient Express. They were picked up by hotel staff at the Sirkeci train station and carried to the hotel in a special designed chair. A picture of the chair is available below.

One of the celebrity guests was Ataturk, the founder of Turkey. Rumours or legends say that he had an affair with Zsa Zsa Gabor in the Pera Palace Hotel. Most famous guests were British and the list is long. Ernest Hemingway wrote a book while staying in this hotel, others were Alfred Hitchcock, Queen Elizabeth II and several other members of Royal families.

The hotel has been completely restored by the Jumeirah Group which owns many exclusive five star hotels. The restaurant is named Agatha after Agatha Christie who was a regular guest. We were impressed with the staircase, the elevator which is the oldest in Turkey and most important the design and furniture. To our surprise there were many guests, most of them rather young. Staying in the Pera Palace Hotel is not cheap.

The only 7 star hotel in the world, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai

The Burj Al Arab is sometimes called the Tower of the Arabs. It is a luxury hotel and some claim the most exclusive hotel in the world. We tried to visit it but this was not possible for non guests. The only opportunity you had was to make reservations for a drink in the bar or book a table in one of the restaurants. The hotel tries to keep non guest away from their facilities by making it extremely expensive. 50 euro for a drink and the restaurant prices are extremely expensive. We don’t mind paying a lot of money for a good restaurant but if you read the poor reviews on Tripadvisor, you think twice before paying these prices. We decided not to waste our money. The hotel was constructed in the shape of a sailboat. The smallest suite is 169m² big and the cheapest rate is around 1.000 euro a night. You could travel to the hotel with a Roll Royce or by helicopter, when you have this kind of money you don’t care anymore about a penny. The Burj Al Arab is not for us mortals but only for the super rich people of this planet.
