Sample of religious paintings from the Hermitage, St. Petersburg

We are going to write several articles about the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, an enormous museum and palace. To give you an idea of the size of the collection we provide you a statement of our guide. If you take one minute to look at each painting, you will need ten years to see all works. Needless to say, we didn’t have enough time and tried to make the best of our half day in the Hermitage. We start with a few religious painting, the most popular topic of the old masters.

 In our previous article we wrote about Matryoshka dolls with the faces of Russian leaders, the master doll displays Vladimir Vladimirovitsj Poetin the current President of Russia. This was the correct answer.

We gaan meerdere artikelen schrijven over het Hermitage in St. Petersburg, een enorm museum en paleis. Om u een idee te geven over de grootte van de collectie delen we met u een uitspraak van onze gids. Als je één minuut uittrekt per schilderij, heb je tien jaar nodig om alles te zien. Het was vanzelfsprekend dat we een selectie moesten maken om het beste te zien in een halve dag Hermitage. We starten met religieuze schilderijen, het meest populaire onderwerp van de oude meesters.

The amazing paintings of Vatican Museum, Rome

We were so impressed with all the paintings that we were not totally blown away from the Sistine Chapel. The paintings that are exposed here are in an excellent state and from painters like Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dali, and many other grandmasters. The colours are so overwhelming, the characters in the stories almost jump out of the frame, they look alive. The ceilings are a treasure and incomparable to anything we have seen before. This is not only the case in one room but in the whole museum, it doesn’t stop.

We waren zo onder de indruk van de schilderijen in het Vaticaans Museum dat we niet omver geblazen werden door de impressies in de Sixtijnse kapel. De schilderwerken hier tentoongesteld zijn in uitstekende staat en gemaakt door kunstenaars als Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dali, en vele andere grootmeesters. De kleuren zijn overweldigend, de personages in de verhalen lijken wel uit het werk te springen, ze lijken tot leven te komen. De plafonds zijn schatten en onvergelijkbaar met alles dat we tot nu toe gezien hebben. Dit is niet het geval in één kamer, maar in alle zalen van het museum, het houdt gewoon niet op..

The Louvre museum in Paris, one of the top three museums in the world

During our last visit to Paris we did not enter the Louvre museum but the exterior is also fantastic. We are regularly in Paris, so when it is raining we will visit the museum again. The pictures below really show the impressiveness and beauty of this enormous palace with more than 60.000 m² exposition space. Too much to visit in one day. The Louvre was a palace and residence of the French Royals but during the French revolution in 1789, the Louvre palace was heavily damaged by the raging population of Paris. A few years later the Louvre museum was born and is now not only one of the largest museums in the world but also one of the oldest. During expansion works of the Louvre in 2004 a modern element in the form of a glass pyramid was added to this historical building. We like this modern touch. I can’t wait to go back again and look at the most famous pieces of the art collection like the Mona Lisa from Leonardo Da Vinci. The Louvre and some pieces of the collection have been used several times in popular movies like “The Da Vinci Code”, “Entrapment”, “2012”, and many others. So if you ask yourself what to do when it rains: visit the Louvre in Paris.

Tijdens ons laatste bezoek aan Parijs zijn we het Louvre museum niet binnen gegaan maar de buitenzijde is ook fantastisch. We bezoeken Parijs regelmatig, dus als het regent komen we zeker terug voor een museum bezoek. De foto’s hieronder tonen aan hoe indrukwekkend en mooi dit enorme paleis is met meer dan 60.000 m² tentoonstellingscapaciteit. Teveel om in één dag te bezoeken. Het Louvre paleis was ook de residentie van de Franse koningen, maar gedurende de Franse Revolutie in 1789 werd het paleis zwaar beschadigd door een razende bevolking. Een paar jaar later werd het Louvre Museum geboren en is nu één van de grootste en oudste musea ter wereld. Gedurende de uitbreidingswerken in 2004 werd een modern element in de vorm van een glazen piramide aan het historische gebouw toegevoegd. We houden wel van zo’n modern tintje. Vol ongeduld kijken we reeds uit naar een volgend bezoek om de meesterwerken uit de collectie te kunnen aanschouwen zoals de Mona Lisa van Leonardo Da Vinci. Het Louvre en zijn meesterwerken zijn regelmatig gebruikt in populaire films zoals: “The Da Vinci Code”, “Entrapment”, “2012”, en vele andere. Wat doe je in Parijs als het regent, bezoek het Louvre..
