Milda holding three stars on top of the Freedom Monument, Riga

On top of this 42 meter high obelisk stands a lady in green copper holding up three stars. These symbolise the three regions (Latgale, Courland and Vidzeme) who became independent from Russia and formed the country Latvia.

The Freedom monument is also a memorial for soldiers who died in the war for independence. The base of the monument contains many statues of freedom fighters. Soldiers guard this monument and take their role very seriously, don't mess with these guys when taking pictures, this is not a London guard.

Malaysian National Monument, Kuala Lumpur

It was a cloudy afternoon when we visited the National Monument in Kuala Lumpur. This is the reason why our pictures are so dark. In fact we were a bit lucky to take picture of this monument at all because five minutes after we left it started pouring.

The monument remembers the victims of WWI and WWII. The main element is a bronze art work with seven soldiers. Around it is a lake, fountains, garden and a pavilion. We were not alone, every ten minutes a new bus arrived with Malaysian, Chinese and Japanese tourists.

Heroines Monument of Chan and Mook, Phuket Town

The statue of two women holding a sword symbolises the heroic acts of Chan and Mook who liberated Phuket from the Burmese invasion in 1785. The two self-made warriors inspired the population of the island to fight against the enemy.

The statues are placed in the middle of a roundabout on the busiest road of the island. In front of it is a ceremonial area made out of marble tiles with shrines and many elephant statues. We already encountered several memorials or temples in Phuket where the elephant plays a dominant role.

Be careful when you try to visit the monument. There are no traffic lights and it is very difficult to cross the road. Waiting for the right moment and running is an absolute requirement.
