The National Museum in Stockholm, a combination of art and architecture

We didn’t have high expectations of the National Museum in Stockholm but we got seriously surprised. The exterior of the building looks sober but once you enter, you face a giant staircase with a great gallery on the first floor. The gallery walls are covered with art work and the ceiling is nicely decorated. Many rooms of the museum have different styles as also a wide range of art like paintings, statues, porcelain, furniture and even modern pieces. Our preference is more classic and went out to the paintings of which you see a few examples below.

We hadden geen hoge verwachtingen van het Nationaal Museum in Stockholm en werden positief verrast. De buitenzijde is sober maar als je binnen gaat zie je onmiddellijk de enorme siertrap met een galerij op het eerste verdiep. De muren van de galerij zijn bedekt met schilderwerken en het plafond is mooi gedecoreerd. Vele kamers in het museum hebben een andere stijl en bieden een grote variatie kunst aan waaronder schilderijen, beeldhouwwerken, porselein, meubelen en zelfs moderne stukken. Onze voorkeur is meer klassiek en ging uit naar de schilderijen waarvan je enkele voorbeelden hieronder ziet..

Beautiful buildings, monuments and nightlife on Wenceslas Square, Prague

This Square is in fact a major road in the city centre of Prague, in the middle between the traffic lanes, you have pedestrian areas. The flowers and small gardens in the middle make the street less grey. The most impressive building is the Main building of the National Museum. This Neo-renaissance building looks so special but unfortunately the building was closed for renovation works. The Grand Hotel Europa looks very special and was used in the Mission Impossible movie. In front of the museum you see a statue of Wenceslas I, the Duke of Bohemia from 921 till 935. He was known as the Good King.

The Wenceslas Square is also known for its nightlife. In several Prague guides, I read that this square is not so safe when it is dark. So I decided to plan my visit during the daylight hours. Unfortunately I didn’t take into account that one restaurant I made reservations in was on this square. After diner, it was already dark, I was alone, but didn’t see any strange looking situations. Probably some people exaggerate; I didn’t have an unsafe feeling.

Dit plein is in feite een grote boulevard in het centrum van Praag. In het midden van de grote verkeersader, tussen de rijvakken in, heb je een voetgangerszone met aangelegde bloemperkjes. Dit maakt het geheel minder grijs. Het meest indrukwekkende monument is het hoofdgebouw van het Nationaal Museum. Het is in Neo-renaissance gebouw was spijtig genoeg gesloten voor renovatie. Het Grand Hotel Europa ziet er zeer speciaal uit en werd gebruikt in de film Mission Impossible. Net voor het museum zie je een standbeeld van Wenceslas I, de Hertog van Bohemen van 921 tot 935. Hij is de geschiedenis ingegaan als de goede koning. 

Het Wenceslasplein staat ook bekend voor het uitgaansleven. In verschillende gidsen staat dat het hier niet zo veilig is na zonsondergang. Ik besloot dus enkel gedurende de dag hier te komen maar ik hield geen rekening met mijn restaurant reservatie. Een van de geboekte restaurants was op dit plein. Na het eten was het reeds donker, helemaal alleen wandelde ik terug naar de metro, maar was ik me niet bewust van enige probleemsituatie. Waarschijnlijk wordt hier toch wat overdreven gereageerd, op geen enkel moment had ik een gevoel van onveiligheid..
