Maritime history of Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia prison

A part of the large prison complex is now used by the Maritime Museum displaying the life of sea men and explorers in the Tierra del Fuego province. Most of the information relates to the fishing trade and there are some nice models of historical sail boats. We can imagine it was not easy to sail to Cape Horn in such an old vessel and survive it.

In 1902 the prison constructed by inmates opened its doors. It had 380 cells and at one moment a maximum capacity of 600 prisoners. In 1947 the prison closed and today tourists can visit one refurbished wing and one old corridor. The prison is built in a star with and each arm is a prison corridor with two floors.

Pictures against the wall are the witnesses of daily live in prison. In this harsh climate it must have been hell. In the middle of the corridor stands an old heating device to burn wood. The cells furthest away from the middle must have been freezing all the time during winter periods.

During the day, inmates had to work in the town of Ushuaia. They constructed houses together with the citizens. Their main task was to collect wood so that the city could survive the winter. The train in front of the prison was used to make the journey between Ushuaia and the woods.

Who wants to live at the end of the world, Ushuaia?

When this city was founded at the end of the world, it was only a military basis and prison. The most southern city in the world had a bad reputation, the scum and the toughest criminals of Argentina were sent here. However, in 1947 the prison closed its doors and the town was bleeding to death. No one in his right mind wanted to live here, completely isolated from the rest of the world.

The government had to make it more attractive and they did. To boost the economy several industrial factories were built here and the workers received partial tax relief. In Ushuaia most of the houses are constructed in wood and tourism seems a booming service when a cruise ship comes in. We liked the guy walking his dogs, he had a few.

In September, the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF), for which we also dance, is organizing in Ushuaia a world ranking competition. We wonder who is going to participate there? It is a long travel and expensive. We doubt if this will be successful.

Sushi buffet in the Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet, Istanbul

The Four Seasons Hotel group is one of our favourites. We like to visit their restaurants for brunch, a lunch or dinner. The hotel setting is always unique and the quality is high. Staying in the hotel is another matter, for our wallet too expensive.

The Four Seasons Sultanahmet in Istanbul is located in a former prison. The prison was built in 1919 and kept this function until 1970. Prisoners were obliged to work within this penetary institute.

Today, the building is a luxury 5 star hotel. The facade is still original like in the prison days but the interior and facilities have changed. Like in every Four Seasons hotel, you find nice flower decorations. The lounge and bar area have a classical look and feel. The gardens are beautiful and the restaurant is located in the garden pergola.

During our visit, we discovered the hotel was serving a sushi buffet on Friday evening. We made reservations and were very pleased. The sushi and sashimi was of high quality and we enjoyed it with a glass of Turkish white wine.
