Enjoying top attractions on a Thames river cruise, London

The Thames River flows like a snake through the city center of London. It is a great way to explore wonderful buildings on both sides of the bank. Only the short distance between Houses of Parliament and the Tower Bridge is already unbelievable.

We took a longer trip up to Greenwich but the short part described above is the best. You see fantastic boats which have been transformed into restaurants or bars. The top attractions on the way are the London Eye, Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Chard, the Tower of London, the Walkie Talkie and the Tower Bridge. Occasionally you see a speed boat flying by.

De Thames Rivier stroomt als een slang door het stadscentrum van Londen. Het is een uitstekende wijze om de prachtige gebouwen aan beide zijden van de oevers te aanschouwen. Enkel al de korte afstand tussen het Parlement en de Tower Bridge is ongelooflijk. 

Wij kozen voor een langere vaart maar het hierboven beschreven stuk is het meest interessante. Je ziet er fantastische boten die werden omgevormd tot restaurants of bars. De top bezienswaardigheden onderweg zijn het London Eye, Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, de Chard, de Tower of London, de Walkie Talkie en de Tower Bridge. Af en toe zie je een speedboot voorbij snellen.

Walking around at night in London with a camera in my hand

Taking shots of London by night was something I had to do. During my stay, I looked for photo opportunities when returning from dinner. I even did major detours to look at the bright lights of major attractions.

My walks covered many districts of London and I never felt unsafe. I was more cautious on the Southbank and Soho but no problems at all. The most impressive shots I made are from the Chard, financial district, London Bridge, London Eye, flashy theatres and casinos, historical buildings, the Big Ben and the Hungerford pedestrian bridge crossing the Thames. The pictures were made with a compact Nikon CoolpixP90, shots with a tripod and SLR would be a lot sharper.

Het nemen van nachtfoto's in Londen was iets dat ik zeker wou doen. Gedurende mijn verblijf, zocht ik fotomogelijkheden wanneer ik terug kwam van het avondeten. Soms maakte ik een grote omweg om naar de verlichte top bezienswaardigheden te gaan kijken. 

Op mijn wandeltochten door vele van de wijken in Londen heb ik me nooit onveilig gevoeld. Ik was meer op mijn hoede op de Southbank en in Soho maar ook hier geen enkel probleem. De meest indrukwekkende foto's heb ik gemaakt van de Chard, het financieel district, London Bridge, kleurrijke theaters en casino's, historische gebouwen, de Big Ben en de Hungerfood voetgangersbrug over de Thames. De foto's werden gemaakt met een eenvoudige Nikon CoolpixP90 compact camera. Het gebruik van een statief en SLR zou een scherper resultaat opleveren..

The Tower Bridge of London

The Tower Bridge is located next to the Tower of London which is a castle and fortress on the river bank. I always thought the bridge was called Tower Bridge because of his two towers but this is not the case, it was named after the fortress. Since 2008, the city is renovating the bridge and it received some new colours, white, blue and red. It gives it a modern appearance but the main goal of the renovation was the falling paint into the Thames which leads to pollution. This bridge of 1886 can be opened with steam engines as you see on the picture below.

De Tower Bridge ligt naast de Tower of London, dat een kasteel en fort is aan de oever van de rivier. Ik heb altijd gedacht dat de Tower Bridge zijn naam had gekregen naar de twee torens op de brug. Dit is echter niet waar, zij werd genaamd naar het fort. Sind 2008, is de stad Londen de brug aan het renoveren en krijgt de brug enkele nieuwe kleurtjes, wit, blauw en rood, wat het een modernere uitstraling geeft. Dit was echter niet de hoofdreden voor de renovatie, maar het afbladeren van de verf in de Thames, waardoor er vervuiling ontstaat. Deze brug uit 1886 kan open en wordt aangedreven door stoom motoren..
