The legend of chapel “Wittentak” on the “Scherpenberg”, Ronse

Ronse is the town in which I was born. As a young kid we were walking from our house to the “Scherpenberg”, a hill close by. It is also called the “Wittentak” or White Branch. In those days and in the minds of many local people, the hill was called like that because it was covered with snow during the winter. The roads were never made snow free and house owners had to leave their cars behind in the valley.

The name of the chapel comes however from the legend of the White Branch. In the 17th century a big oak embraced with its branches a fragile statue of Our Lady that had been hanging there for about 200 years. The tree created a natural alcove around Our Lady and the leaves coloured white. After this miracle the village was saved from the plague and the population built this chapel on the hill.

As you see on the pictures, it is small chapel and during the summer there are religious celebrations in front of the entrance. That’s why there are so many benches. Around the chapel you see sculptures displaying the stations of the Via Dela Rosa. The panoramic views of the Flemish Ardennes are impressive.

Ronse is mijn geboortestad.

Augustinian monastery, a new destination and the chapel

This monastery in Leuven next to the Roman Gate is getting a new destination. The original monastery dates from the 12th century and this is now a place for cultural events, it has a cafeteria, and the Martin group builds a high class hotel within its walls. The chapel was empty and there was an exhibition. You still see the organ, the majestic doors, the altar, statues and decorations. We hope the chapel will remain like this and keep this last bit of its richness.
