Spanish Steps at the Piazza di Spagna, Rome

It is always crowded at the Spanish Steps in Rome, sometimes the Piazza di Spagna is completely packed with visitors. Certainly at night people gather here to talk and have a drink. If you look upwards, you see the two towers of the Santa Trinita dei Monti church which has an excellent interior. On the square below, you see the Fontana della Barcaccia, a fountain from the 17th century created by Bernini’s father. The Spanish Steps are one of the most popular attractions in Rome, many couples come here to take pictures on their wedding day. In the evening, the 138 stairs and the church are artistically put in the spot lights, there are however too many people to still see a stair case.

Het is altijd druk aan de Spaanse Trappen in Rome, soms is de Piazza di Spagna volledig bezaaid met bezoekers. Zeker ’s avonds komen de mensen hier samen om te praten en iets te drinken. Als je naar boven kijkt, zie je de twee torens van de Santa Trinita dei Monti kerk met zijn uitmuntende interieur. Op het plein beneden, zie je de Fontana della Barcaccia, een fontein ontworpen door de vader van de beroemde Bernini. De Spaanse Trappen zijn een van de populairste trekpleisters van Rome, vele koppels gebruiken deze locatie voor hun huwelijksfoto’s. ’s avonds, zijn de 138 trappen en de kerk artistiek verlicht maar er zijn teveel mensen om trappen nog te kunnen zien..

Saint Peter Basilica the biggest church in the world, Vatican City

The Saint Peter’s Basilica is probably the most famous monument of Vatican City. Almost each time the pope is on television it is from inside the Saint Peter’s Basilica. This is a major Basilica or a basilica which is higher in grade than all other basilicas in the world. Inside there is place for 60.000 believers and the dome has an altitude of 132m.

In this church you find the graves of several popes but also the grave of Saint Peter who was crucified by the feared and cruel emperor Nero around the year 65. He underwent the same faith as Jesus in Jerusalem. They started working on this church in 1506 and it took 120 years to complete it. The dome was designed by Michelangelo but made bigger than on the original plans. In front of the crypt entrance, you see Bernini’s alter, an amazing piece of art like all his statues and fountains in Rome. The treasures in Vatican City are so mind blowing that it can not be comprehended via a text or pictures. You have to visit this mini state at least once in your life, independent if you are a believer or not.

De Sint-Pieters Basiliek is waarschijnlijk het meest beroemde monument in Vaticaanstad. Bijna iedere keer als de Paus op TV komt is het van uit de Sint-Pieters Basiliek. Dit is een major Basiliek, met name een basiliek hoger in rang dan alle andere in de wereld. Binnen is er plaatst voor ongeveer 60.000 gelovigen en de koepel is 132m hoog.

In deze kerk vind je de graftombes van verschillende pausen, maar ook van Sint-Pieter die werd gekruisigd in Rome door de wrede en gevreesde keizer Nero rond het jaar 65. Hij onderging hetzelfde lot als Jezus in Jeruzalem. Men begon te bouwen aan deze kerk in 1506 in het heeft 120 jaar geduurd om het te voltooien. De koepel werd ontworpen door Michelangelo maar werd hoger gebouwd dan de originele plannen. Voor de ingang van de pauselijke crypte, zie je Bernini’s altaar, een fantastisch kunstwerk net als zijn beelden en fonteinen in Rome. Je kan niet niet voorstellen via teksten of foto’s hoe ongelooflijk de schatten van Vaticaanstad zijn. Iedereen zou op zijn minst één maal in zijn leven naar Vaticaanstad moeten gaan onafhankelijk of je gelovig bent of niet..

Vatican City and the St. Peter’s Square, the window to the world

Many people don’t know that Vatican City is an independent state. It was declared independent from Italy in 1929 and has its own security (army) of Swiss Guards. They look like old fashioned puppets but don’t underestimate them, they are highly trained. The ruler of the Vatican City is the pope, Benedict the 16th. Such a small country and so much power, how is this possible? The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church and Christianity. In the world there are around 1,3 billion Christians. Powerful leaders like the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of the UK, the President of France, and many other world leaders go on audience to the Pope. He influences the world politics from the Holy Chair. The window to the world of Vatican City is the St. Peters’ Square. For all important Christian festivities, the square is packed with visitors, sometime more than a million, and the celebrations are broadcasted live all over the world like with Easter. On the square you find the St. Peters’ Basilica, but also the obelisk and Bernini’s fountain. The galleries around the square are decorated with statues; all these are the work of Bernini. It is an amazing place and as long as you are in front of the St. Peter’s Basilica you are still in Rome, Italy. When you enter the Basilica or the Vatican Museums you are in the sovereign state of Vatican City. Careful you will need your passport to enter.

Veel mensen weten niet dat Vaticaanstad een soevereine staat is. De onafhankelijkheid van Italië kwam tot stand in 1929 en de staat heeft zijn eigen beveiliging (leger) door middel van de Zwitserse Garde. Ze zien er uit als ouderwetse poppetjes maar onderschat ze niet, ze zijn goed opgeleid. Het staatshoofd is de paus, Benedictus de 16de. Zo’n klein staatje met zoveel macht hoe is dit mogelijk? De Paus is de leider van de Katholieke kerk, het Christendom met ongeveer 1,3 miljard gelovigen. Machtige leiders zoals de President van de Verenigde Staten, de President van Frankrijk, de Eerste minister van Groot-Brittannië, gaan allen op audiëntie bij de Paus. Hij beïnvloedt de wereld politiek van op de Heilige Stoel. Het venster naar de wereld voor Vaticaanstad is het Sint-Pietersplein. Voor alle belangrijke Christelijke feesten is het plein vol met gelovigen, soms meer dan een miljoen zoals met Pasen. Op deze dagen worden beelden van de vieringen rechtstreeks wereldwijd uitgezonden. Op het plein vind je de St. Pieters Basiliek, maar ook de Obelisk, en de fontein van Bernini. De galerijen rond het plein zijn versierd met beelden die allen ontworpen zijn door Bernini. Het is een ongelooflijke plaats en zolang je voor de St. Pieters basiliek blijft ben je in Rome, Italië. Als je de basiliek of the Vaticaanse musea binnengaat ben je in de onafhankelijke staat van Vaticaanstad. Opgelet je dient je identiteitskaart mee te nemen.

The obscure castle Saint Angelo, remember the movie Angels and Demons

We got to know Castle Saint Angelo because it was one of the main locations in the movie “Angels and Demons” of writer Dan Brown. In the movie, the candidates who applied for the position of Pope where kept hostage in the castle and killed one by one in different places in Rome. This is fiction but in realty the tunnel between Vatican City and the Castle of Saint Angelo exists. It was one of the routes used by Pope Clemens VII in the 13th century. It called the castle of angels because Pope Gregorius spotted Angel Gabriel on the roof, which ended a period of plague in Rome. The bridge in front of the castle is decorated with statues of angels all designed by Bernini. After seeing the “Angel and Demons” we had to visit the castle but the bridge was more impressive.

We leerden de Engelenburcht kennen door de film “Het Bernini Mysterie”. Dit was een zeer belangrijke locatie in de film geschreven door Dan Brown, waar de kandidaten om Paus te worden werden gegijzeld, vooraleer men ze vermoorde. Dit is natuurlijk fictie, maar de tunnel tussen Vaticaanstad en de Engelenburcht bestaat echt. Het was een ontsnappingsroute die werd gebruikt door Paus Clemens in de 13de eeuw. Het kasteel werd de Engelenburcht genoemd daar Paus Gregorius hier de aartsengel Gabriel gezien heeft die de verspreiding van de pest in Rome stopte. De Engelenbrug voor het kasteel is versierd met engelen beelden gemaakt door Bernini. Na het zien van de film “Het Bernini Mysterie” moesten we het kasteel bezoeken, maar de brug was meer indrukwekkend.
