The Church of Gold or the San Marco Basilica, Venice

The San Marco cathedral was completed in 1650 and is currently being renovated. This is the reason why we didn’t take overview pictures. We particularly like the mosaics and here you can find back the history of the crusades. The oriental culture is present, the men are wearing turbans. Also the mosaic displaying a basilica with domes looks oriental, a bit like the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The statue surrounded by angels with golden wings is San Marco or Saint Mark. He was an apostle who did missionary work with Saint Paul. Later he became the bishop of Alexandria. Here again we find back the oriental influence.

An impressive basilica, we were however not allowed to take pictures of the interior. This is one of the big disadvantages of Venice. Everywhere you need to pay entrance but you can’t take pictures. The arrogance of the sinking city.

De San Marco kathedraal werd afgewerkt in 1650 en wordt nu gerenoveerd. Dit is de reden waarom we geen overzicht foto’s genomen hebben. Heel bijzonder vonden we de mozaïeken waar je de geschiedenis van de kruistochten in kan terug vinden. De oosterse cultuur is aanwezig, mannen dragen tulbanden. Ook de mozaïek die een basiliek met koepels uitbeeldt ziet er oosters uit, deze lijkt een beetje op de Hagia Sophia in Istanboel. 

Het standbeeld omringt door engelen met gouden vleugels is San Marco. Hij was een apostel die missionaris werk deed met Sint Paul. Later werd hij bisschop van Alexandrië. Hier zien we weer een oosterse invloed. 

Een indrukwekkende basiliek maar we mochten geen foto’s binnen in de kerk maken. Dit is één van de grote nadelen van Venetië. Overal moet je inkom betalen maar nergens mag je foto’s maken. De arrogantie van een zinkende stad..

Elisabethpark in the autumn, walking in front of the Basilica of Koekelberg

The Elisabethpark stretches from the Basilic of Koekelberg to the Leopold II laan. The views of the Art Deco Basilica together with brown and yellow fall colours of the trees provide an excellent opportunity for a walk in the park. Try to imagine that the Elisabethpark is located in the busy city centre of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Underneath this park you find a four lane tunnel connecting the city centre with the suburbs and the highway. What do you think of the longues of Brussels, the basilic and the autumn leaves.

Het Elisabethpark strekt zich uit van de Basiliek van Koekelberg tot aan de drukke Leopold II laan. Het zicht op de Art Deco Basiliek samen met de bruin gele kleuren van de bomen bieden een uitstekende mogelijkheid voor een wandeling in het park. Tracht je in te beelden dat dit park gelegen is in een druk stadsgedeelte van Brussel, de hoofdstad van België. Onder het park bevinden zich vier drukke verkeerstunnels die de rand van Brussel met het stadscentrum verbinden. Wat vind je van de longen van Brussel, de basiliek en de herfstkleuren.?

St. Joris basilica inside the Prague castle walls

This is the oldest church within the castle walls of Prague and it dates from 920, so almost a thousand years old. It was built in the Roman architectural style but the red white façade is totally different than the other exterior parts of the church. It is comparable with colourful church facades we already saw in Italy. Your first impression when you enter the church is: am I in a medieval castle? Walls carved out of rock or very big bricks provide a robust wall structure and gave me this feeling. The coffin on one of the pictures is from the grandmother of King Wencelas of Bohemia. To reach the exit, you have to pass via a small chapel with a very detailed and beautiful altar.

De St. Joris Basiliek is de oudste kerk binnen de muren van de Praagse Burcht en ze werd gebouwd in 920. Hiermee is ze bijna 1000 jaar oud. De Romaanse architectuur van de kerk is totaal anders dan de rood witte gevel. De gevel is echt een aandachtstrekker en enkel vergelijkbaar met sommige kleurvolle kerkgevels dat we in Italië gezien hebben. Mijn eerste indruk bij het binnengaan van de kerk was: is dit een middeleeuws kasteel? De muren zijn net uit rotsen gesneden en enorme stenen lijken zeer robuust, hierdoor kreeg ik dat gevoel. De doodskist (grafkelder) op één van de foto’s is van de grootmoeder van Koning Wencelas van Bohemen. Om de uitgang te bereiken moet je passeren via een kleine kapel waarin een zeer mooi gedetailleerd altaar staat..

Santa Maria in Aracoeli or the Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven, Rome

By coincidence we discovered this amazing Minor Basilica in Rome, next to the Monument of Vittoria Emmanuelle II. This Gothic church was built in the 12th century, so it is almost 900 years old. All frescos, wall paintings and statues are fabulous. The wooden ceiling immediately caught our attention, it is heavily decorated and looks like it contains golden elements. The numerous chandeliers give the church an appearance of a palace. They hang in front of an arch just above the altar. The arch is a collection of paintings. You have to enter this church to comprehend the treasures on display. No entrance fee was required. This was our last Rome article, tomorrow we write again about Munich.

Door toeval ontdekten we deze fantastische Minor Basiliek in Rome, die vlak naast het Monument of Vittoria Emmanuelle II ligt. Deze Gotische kerk werd gebouwd in de 12de eeuw dus is ze bijna 900 jaar oud. Alle fresco’s, schilderwerken en beelden zijn ongelooflijk. Het houten plafond trok onmiddellijk onze aandacht, het is zwaar gedecoreerd en het lijkt alsof er gouden versieringen op liggen. De vele lusters geven de kerk een uitstraling van een paleis. De meeste lusters hangen voor de sierboog net boven het altaar. De sierboog is een collectie van schilderwerken. Je moet gewoon deze kerk bezoeken om te kunnen begrijpen welke schatten hier worden tentoongesteld. Er moest geen inkom worden betaald. Saint Peter Basilica the biggest church in the world, Vatican City

The Saint Peter’s Basilica is probably the most famous monument of Vatican City. Almost each time the pope is on television it is from inside the Saint Peter’s Basilica. This is a major Basilica or a basilica which is higher in grade than all other basilicas in the world. Inside there is place for 60.000 believers and the dome has an altitude of 132m.

In this church you find the graves of several popes but also the grave of Saint Peter who was crucified by the feared and cruel emperor Nero around the year 65. He underwent the same faith as Jesus in Jerusalem. They started working on this church in 1506 and it took 120 years to complete it. The dome was designed by Michelangelo but made bigger than on the original plans. In front of the crypt entrance, you see Bernini’s alter, an amazing piece of art like all his statues and fountains in Rome. The treasures in Vatican City are so mind blowing that it can not be comprehended via a text or pictures. You have to visit this mini state at least once in your life, independent if you are a believer or not.

De Sint-Pieters Basiliek is waarschijnlijk het meest beroemde monument in Vaticaanstad. Bijna iedere keer als de Paus op TV komt is het van uit de Sint-Pieters Basiliek. Dit is een major Basiliek, met name een basiliek hoger in rang dan alle andere in de wereld. Binnen is er plaatst voor ongeveer 60.000 gelovigen en de koepel is 132m hoog.

In deze kerk vind je de graftombes van verschillende pausen, maar ook van Sint-Pieter die werd gekruisigd in Rome door de wrede en gevreesde keizer Nero rond het jaar 65. Hij onderging hetzelfde lot als Jezus in Jeruzalem. Men begon te bouwen aan deze kerk in 1506 in het heeft 120 jaar geduurd om het te voltooien. De koepel werd ontworpen door Michelangelo maar werd hoger gebouwd dan de originele plannen. Voor de ingang van de pauselijke crypte, zie je Bernini’s altaar, een fantastisch kunstwerk net als zijn beelden en fonteinen in Rome. Je kan niet niet voorstellen via teksten of foto’s hoe ongelooflijk de schatten van Vaticaanstad zijn. Iedereen zou op zijn minst één maal in zijn leven naar Vaticaanstad moeten gaan onafhankelijk of je gelovig bent of niet..
