Plaza Espagna and Monument Cortes, Cadiz

This square and monument were erected for the celebration of the Spanish constitution of 1812. Surrounded by green sculptured trees and red flowers the victory column stands out in the sun light.

On top of the pillar, a few men are carrying the book of the constitution, the law on which Spain was founded. Statues are well restored and on both sides of the column you find bronze horses with their master. The most impressive statue is from a lady carrying a bronze sword. She represents Spain.

Dit plein en monument werden opgetrokken om de Spaanse constitutie van 1812 te vieren. Omringt door groene sculptuur boompjes en rode bloemen staat deze overwinningszuil te schitteren in het zonlicht. 

Op de top dragen enkele mannen het zware boek van de grondwet, de wet bij de oprichting van Spanje. Standbeelden zijn goed onderhouden en aan beide zijden van de zuil staan bronzen paarden met hun ruiters. Het meest indrukwekkende beeld is dat van een dame die een bronzen zwaard draagt. Zij vertegenwoordigt Spanje.

Restaurant Watatsumi on Plaza Espagna, Barcelona

On the roof of the Arenas on Plaza Espagna, you find many restaurants. One is a good Japanese called Watatsumi. This restaurant can be combined with a visit to the Arenas shopping center and from above you have spectacular views of the Venetian Towers and the National Palace.

Let's go back to the restaurant. It has a modern interior with fantastic bar. They use a lot of fish images in the decorations, which blends in perfectly with the style of the Japanese cuisine.

We decided to start with some warm Dim Sums something Kristel really likes and a tuna tartar. As a main course we had the teriyaki salmon and a bento box combining sushi and sashimi. We can recommend this restaurant which serves quality food at fair prices.

Op het dak van de Arenas op Plaza Espagna, vind je vele restaurants. Eén daarvan is een goede Japanner, Watatsumi genaamd. Het restaurant kan worden gecombineerd met een bezoek aan het Arenas winkelcentrum en van boven heb je spectaculaire zichten op de Venetiaanse Torens en het Nationaal Paleis.

Maar laat ons terug gaan naar het restaurant. Het heeft een modern interieur en een fantastische bar. Men gebruikt er visdecoratie wat perfect past bij de stijl van de Japanse keuken. 

We besloten te starten met warme Dim Sum, iets dat Kristel heel graag eet, en een tonijn tartaar. Als hoofdgerecht kozen we voor teriyaki zalm en een bentobox die sushi en sashimi combineerde. We kunnen dit restaurant, dat goede kwaliteit tegen eerlijke prijzen aanbiedt, zeker aanbevelen.

Plaza Espagna and the Magic Fountains by night, Barcelona

We had diner close to Plaza Espagna and I planned to take some night shots afterwards. The conditions were great and I didn't forget my tripod. We are very happy with the results of the pictures of Plaza Espagna and in particular Arenas de Barcelona.

A bit further on the Montjuïc hill, colored fountains and music enchant tourists. We have to admit it is a spectacular view. Like many landmarks in Barcelona, the fountains were built for the World Exhibition of 1929.

We hadden een restaurant geboekt in de buurt van Plaza Espagna en waren van plan achteraf nachtfoto's te maken. De omstandigheden waren uitstekend en deze keer was ik mijn Tripod niet vergeten. We konden niet meer tevreden zijn met de foto's van Plaza Espagna en in het bijzonder Arenas de Barcelona. 

Een beetje verder op de heuvel van Montjuïc, betoveren op muziek dansende gekleurde fonteinen het publiek. We moeten toegeven dat dit heel spectaculair is. Zoals vele bezienswaardigheden werden de fonteinen gebouwd voor de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1929.

Italian flair on Plaza Espagna, Barcelona

Isn't it special to discover Italian towers on a Spanish Square? It is however a fact, both Venetian Towers are 47 meters high and are a marking point for the Avenue of Queen Maria Christina. It is a strange feeling to see replicas of Italian landmarks in Barcelona. The pictures we took from above were taken from the top floor of Arenas de Barcelona. This bullring was constructed in 1900 and is now a modern shopping centre.

Most of our attention goes to the fountains and statues in the middle of Plaza Espagna. There are no crossings to this monument on this multi-lane roundabout but if you wait until traffic stops in front of a red light, you can start running to the middle. That's what I did to the big astonishment of my parents in law. Funny circumstances, when I ran back they stated "You said that you are not taking risks on your travels". I didn't know crossing the street was so dangerous. Lol.

Is het niet bijzonder Italiaanse torens te ontdekken op een Spaans plein? Het is echter een feit dat de twee 47 meter hoge Venetiaanse Torens de invalsweg van de Avenue Koningin Maria Christina markeren. Wel blijft het raar deze replica's van bijzondere Italiaanse architectuur in Barcelona aan te treffen. De foto's uit hoger gelegen positie zijn van op het dak van de Arenas de Barcelona getrokken. De stieren arena gebouwd in het jaar 1900 en nu omgevormd tot een modern winkelcentrum. 

Onze meeste aandacht gaat uit naar de fonteinen en standbeelden in het midden van Plaza Espagna. Er is echter geen voetganger oversteekplaats naar dit monument. Op het rondpunt met meerdere rijvakken kan je echter wachten tot het verkeer in zijstraten geconfronteerd wordt met een rood licht en dan ren je over naar het midden. Dat is wat ik deed tot de grote verontwaardiging van mijn schoonouders. Wel een grappige situatie wanneer ik terug liep, en zij mij confronteerden: "Je zei dat je nooit risico's nam tijdens je reizen". Ik wist niet dat een straat overlopen zo gevaarlijk was. Lol.

Pigeons taking a bath in the Plaza de España fountains, Madrid

Plaza España is located at the end of Gran Via and can easily be reached by metro. We walked from Puerta Sol through the shopping streets and alongside the theaters of Gran Via. Arriving you are confronted with two very large but stylish buildings. Both Torre de Madrid and Edificio España were built in the late 1950's and are still a landmark. With the new modern districts of Madrid they are no longer the tallest buildings of the city.

In the middle of Plaza de España stands the Cervantes Monument in honor of one of the most important Spanish authors, Miguel de Cervantes. He wrote the tales of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Large bronze statues of these two characters stand in front of the writer's column. For interested tourists you also have a souvenir market.

In one of the smaller fountains there was a group of pigeons taking a bath. It was fascinating to see the pigeons shaking their feathers, opening their wings, rolling in the water and walking in the fountain. After taking many pictures, I add two good ones to this post.

Plaza España is gelegen aan het einde van Gran Via en kan gemakkelijk worden bereikt met de metro. Wij hebben echter gewandeld van Puerta Sol door de winkelstraten en langs de theaters van Gran Via. Als je er aankomt wordt je geconfronteerd met twee grote torengebouwen, zowel de Torre de Madrid als de Edificio España werden gebouwd aan het einde van de vijftiger jaren en zijn nog steeds een icoon. Met de nieuwe moderne districten van de Spaanse hoofdstad zijn ze echter niet langer de hoogste wolkenkrabbers.

In het midden van Plaza España staat het monument ter ere van Miguel de Cervantes, een belangrijke Spaanse schrijver. Hij is de geestelijke vader van Don Quixote en Sancho Panza. Van beide figuren staat een enorm bronzen beeld voor het Cervantes Monument. De houten blokhutjes vormen een souvenir markt voor toeristen. 

In één van de kleinere fonteinen waren een groepje duiven aan het baden. Het was heel fascinerend te zien hoe zij hun veren schudden, vleugels openen, in het water rollen en wandelen in de fontein. Na het trekken van vele foto's voeg ik er twee redelijke aan deze blog toe.
