The Little Mermaid and other statues in Copenhagen

The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is one of the main attractions of the capital of Denmark. It displays a character out of a fairy tale from Hans Christian Andersen. It is about a mermaid that fell in love with a Prince and gave away her tongue to a witch in return of legs. She couldn’t talk to the prince and he married someone else. After trying to kill herself in the waves of the sea, she stayed alive but invisible for humans. In this state she had to do good things for a period of 30 years. A little further, I am posing with a big mermaid. They seem to love women statues with naked breasts here in Copenhagen, because you find these all over the city. Het standbeeld van de Kleine Zeemeermin in Kopenhagen is één van de meest populaire bezienswaardigheden van de hoofdstad van Denemarken. De Kleine Zeemeermin komt uit een sprookje van Hans Christian Andersen. Ze werd verliefd op een prins en gaf haar tong aan een zeeheks in ruil voor benen. Hierdoor kon ze niet met haar prins communiceren en hij trouwde met iemand anders. Ze probeerde zelfmoord te plegen in het schuim van de golven, maar bleef leven, alhoewel onzichtbaar voor mensen. In deze staat moest ze 30 jaar goede daden verrichten om te kunnen sterven. Een beetje verder op de kade, poseerde ik met een grote zeemeermin. Ze houden wel van vrouwen met naakte borsten hier in Kopenhagen, want je vindt deze beelden overal in de stad. “Manneken Pis” in Brussels or the boy who saved the city by peeing

The most famous statue in Brussels is only 58cm high. You can find it at the corner of the Eikstraat near the Main Square. The statue displays a boy who pees into a fountain. It is one of the symbols of Brussels since the 14th century and in French it is called “Petit Julein”. On these pictures, you see “Manneken Pis” naked but several times a year he gets dressed up depending on the festivity that takes place in the city. The statue is so famous and receives this tribute because they think a little boy saved the city by peeing on a wick and extinguishing the fire. The shops in this street sell many Belgium products like waffles, chocolate and candy. Some shops display “Manneken Pis” in all types of colours and delights.

Het meest beroemde standbeeld in Brussel is slechts 58cm groot. Je vind het op de hoek van de Eikstraat dicht bij de grote markt. Het is een jongetje die in een fontein plast. Dit is een symbool van Brussel sinds de 14de eeuw en de Franstaligen noemen het “Petit Julein”. Op de foto’s zie je een naakte “Manneken Pis”, maar gedurende festiviteiten wordt hij door de Brusselaars aangekleed. Het standbeeld is zo beroemd daar men denkt dat het kleine jongetje een brandend lont heeft gedoofd door er op te plassen en zo de stad te redden. Vele winkels in deze straat verkopen Belgische producten zoals chocolade, wafels en snoep. Sommige kleurrijke lekkernijen zijn in de vorm van “Manneken Pis”..
