The commercialisation of God, Maria and religion, Scherpenheuvel

The modern world is commercial, this is a fact. With money, you can buy a lot. Not everything but enough. The priests and regilieus people have also seen an opportunity. Sometimes you have to pay a fee to enter a church and we thought that the House of God was open for everyone. In the Notre-Dame of Paris they have a real store inside the Cathedral. In the Church of the Holy Selpuchre of Jeruzalem, priests sell services on the tomb of Jesus. Here in Scherpenheuvel we saw a special store with statues of Maria, Jesus, Jozef, priests, angels, candles and many more. We think this is a special store that only a few of you have seen.

De moderne wereld is commercieel, dat is een feit. Met geld kan je bijna alles kopen. De priesters en religieuze mensen zien hier ook hun commerciële mogelijkheden. Soms moet je inkom betalen voor het betreden van een kerk en wij die dachten dat het Huis van God open was voor iedereen. In de Notre-Dame van Parijs hebben ze een echte winkel in de kathedraal. In de kerk van het Heilige Graf te Jeruzalem verkopen de priesters hun diensten op het graf van Jezus. Hier in Scherpenheuvel hebben we een zeer uitzonderlijke winkel gezien vol beeldjes van Maria, Jezus, Jozef, priesters, engelen, kaarsen en veel meer. We denken dat zo’n uitzonderlijke winkel nog niet door velen van u gezien is..

The dome with the stars on the Basilica of Scherpenheuvel

The Basilica of Scherpenheuvel in Belgium has a special dome because it is covered with golden stars. It is an old church dating from the 17th century. This small church is the most famous pilgrim place in Belgium. People come here to pray and honour Our Lady. Why at this place? In the woods surrounding this area, many centuries ago, a Maria image hanging in a tree was worshiped by the local community. A man, who tried to steal it, was completely paralysed and could only move again when someone else returned the Maria image back in the tree. This was a miracle. More and more pilgrims come to this church which was awarded the Golden Rose by Pope Benedictus XVI. It is an amazing piece of art as recognition for a unique Basilica in Scherpenheuvel.

De Basiliek van Scherpenheuvel in België heeft een speciale koepel die volledig bedekt is met gouden sterren. Het is een redelijk oude kerk, daterende uit de 17de eeuw. Scherpenheuvel is het meest beroemde bedevaartsoord in België. Mensen komen hier om te bidden voor Onze Lieve Vrouw. Waarom hier? In de bossen in dit gebied hing eeuwen geleden een Maria beeldje, de lokale bevolking kwam het aanbidden. Tot op een dag een man het wou stelen, hij kon zich niet meer verder bewegen en was verlamd. Toen men het beeldje terug plaatste in de boom werd hij weer normaal. Dit was een mirakel. Meer en meer pelgrims bezoeken deze plaats en de Basiliek kreeg de Gouden Roos van Paus Benedictus de 16de. Het is een ongelooflijk kunstwerk als erkenning voor een unieke Basiliek in Scherpenheuvel..

Piazza Venezia Maria church in Rome

Piazza Venezia in Rome is the most known for its Monument of Victor Emanuel with the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On top of this monument you have an observation deck from where you see the Colosseum, Foro Romanum, and you look down on Piazza Venezia. There we saw two churches with each a small dome, standing next to each other and in the middle the Italian flag. We were immediately attracted by that image. Only the left church was open and it was dedicated to Maria. The church was built in a circle and holds many beautiful paintings. This richly decorated church is one of the treasures of Rome we had never heard of.

Piazza Venezia in Rome is het meest bekend omwille van het Victor Emanuel Monument en het graf van de Onbekende Soldaat. Bovenop dit gebouw is er observatie platform van waarop je een mooi zicht hebt op het Colosseum, Foro Romanum, en de Piazza Venezia. Hier zagen we twee kerkjes bestaande uit één koepel, met in het midden een wapperende Italiaanse vlag. We werden onmiddellijk aangetrokken tot dit beeld. Enkel de linker kerk toegewijd aan Maria was open. Deze is gebouwd in een cirkel en er bevinden zich vele mooie schilderijen. De rijk versierde kerk is één van de vele schatten van Rome waar we nog niet van gehoord hadden.
