Bridge of the 25th April and Jesus Christ, Lisbon

This incredible bridge over the Taag River is more than 2km long. It was named after the revolution of 25th of April in 1974 which ended the military regime in Portugal. The bridge is enormous and we took pictures from all angles from the city side bank. It was too difficult to get on the bridge itself so we continued our walk toward the Belem castle. Later we also took some pictures right underneath the bridge when the cruise ship sailed by.

Underneath there is a small port with recreational vessels and restaurants. Looking at the other bank we see the high statue of Jesus Christ. A similar monument as in Rio de Janeiro. Lisbon is a fascinating city.

Deze ongelooflijke brug over de Taag rivier is meer dan 2km lang. Ze werd genaamd naar de 25ste april 1974 revolutie die een einde maakte aan het militaire regime in Portugal. De brug is enorm en we namen foto’s uit alle oogpunten van op de oever aan de stadszijde. Het was te moeilijk om te voet op de brug te geraken dus vervolgden we onze wandeling naar het kasteel van Belem. Later namen we nog enkele foto’s recht onder de brug van op het cruise schip tijdens de doorvaart. 

Een kleine haven huist enkele recreatieve bootjes en vele restaurants. Aan de andere oever van de Taag zien we het hoge standbeeld van Jezus. Een gelijkaardig monument als in Rio de Janeiro. Lisabon is een fascinerende stad.

The commercialisation of God, Maria and religion, Scherpenheuvel

The modern world is commercial, this is a fact. With money, you can buy a lot. Not everything but enough. The priests and regilieus people have also seen an opportunity. Sometimes you have to pay a fee to enter a church and we thought that the House of God was open for everyone. In the Notre-Dame of Paris they have a real store inside the Cathedral. In the Church of the Holy Selpuchre of Jeruzalem, priests sell services on the tomb of Jesus. Here in Scherpenheuvel we saw a special store with statues of Maria, Jesus, Jozef, priests, angels, candles and many more. We think this is a special store that only a few of you have seen.

De moderne wereld is commercieel, dat is een feit. Met geld kan je bijna alles kopen. De priesters en religieuze mensen zien hier ook hun commerciële mogelijkheden. Soms moet je inkom betalen voor het betreden van een kerk en wij die dachten dat het Huis van God open was voor iedereen. In de Notre-Dame van Parijs hebben ze een echte winkel in de kathedraal. In de kerk van het Heilige Graf te Jeruzalem verkopen de priesters hun diensten op het graf van Jezus. Hier in Scherpenheuvel hebben we een zeer uitzonderlijke winkel gezien vol beeldjes van Maria, Jezus, Jozef, priesters, engelen, kaarsen en veel meer. We denken dat zo’n uitzonderlijke winkel nog niet door velen van u gezien is..

The Via Dolorosa route through the woods of Scherpenheuvel

Starting at the Basilica of Scherpenheuvel, you find a walking path through the woods where for each station of the Via Dolorosa a small monument has been placed. On the way you pass the Maria Hall which is a place for religious gatherings. Next to it you see a statue of Father Damien, a Saint from Belgium (Jozef De Veuster) who dedicated his lived caring for people with leprosy on the island of Moloka’i in Hawai. But back to this walk in the woods following the improvised route which should resemble the Via Dolorosa where Jesus carried his cross uphill to the place of crucifixion. Here in the woods you also walk uphill until you reach a big cross with the image of Jesus. It was an intriguing walk, thinking back of our visit to the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The only difference was that in Israel it was a real confrontation with the origin of Christianity and all emotions that go together with it. On the pictures, you see Kristel, her brother Kristof and our dogs.

Aan de Basiliek van Scherpenheuvel start een wandelpad door de bossen waar voor ieder station van de Via Dolorosa een klein monument is opgericht. Onderweg kom je de Maria Hal tegen, een plaats voor religieuze bijeenkomsten. Naast de hal staat een standbeeld van Pater Damiaan, de Heilig verklaarde priester uit België (Jozef De Veuster), die zijn leven wijde aan de verzorging van melaatsen op het eiland Moloka’i in Hawaï. Maar terug naar onze wandeling door het bos, de geïmproviseerde kruisweg volgend, waar Jezus het kruis naar boven droeg voor de kruisiging. Hier in de bossen wandel je ook een helling op, tot aan de top, waar je een heel groot kruis staat met het beeld van Jezus. Het was een intrigerende wandeling die doet terugdenken aan ons bezoek aan de Via Dolorosa in Jeruzalem. Het enige verschil is dat in Israël, het de echte route was waar het Christendom is ontstaan en dit gaat gepaard met vele emoties. The oldest church in the world, the church of The Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem

This is really the oldest church in the world, it originates from the year 326, and it is almost 1.700 years old. The church is built on the hill of Golgotha where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Stations 10 to 14 of the Via Dolorosa are located in the church. We will come back on that later. There are many Christian streams and in the church you find a Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic part. All these different styles in one church is very unique. For us this church has touched us the most because of the historical events and different styles. This is not just a statement. because we have already visited more than a hundred churches.

Dit is echt de oudste kerk van de wereld, ze werd gebouwd in het jaar 326 en is bijna 1.700 jaar oud. De kerk werd gebouwd op de heuvel van Golgotha waar Jezus werd gekruisigd, begraven en is herrezen. Stations 10 tot 14 van de Via Dolorosa zijn in de kerk gevestigd. Hierop komen we later terug. Het Christendom bestaat uit verschillende stromingen en in deze kerk vind je een Grieks Orthodox, Armeens en Rooms Katholiek gedeelte. Al deze verschillende stijlen in één kerk is zeer uniek. Voor ons is dit de kerk die ons het meeste geraakt heeft omwille van de historische gebeurtenissen die hier hebben plaatsgevonden. Ook de verschillende stijlen hebben hiertoe bijgedragen. Dit is niet zomaar de uitspraak, we hebben reeds meer als 100 kerken bezocht..

The Basilica of the Annunciation, Nazareth

Travel article Nr. 1 related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

Nazareth was a small town of 200 people. In this Basilica of the Annunciation, you find the grotto where Mary and her parents lived. The legend tells us that Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was going to give birth to a son called Jesus. More than 2000 years ago single mothers didn’t exist, they were stoned to dead. Joseph and Mary knew each other for a very long time and married, which saved Mary’s life and resulted into the creation of Christianity. In a later phase of their lives when Joseph, Mary and Jesus returned from their escape to Egypt, they also lived here in the grotto. This is a very important pilgrim site and in 427 a Byzantine church was constructed above the grotto. This church and also the later Crusade church from the 12th century were destroyed. The current Basilica was built in 1969. When you enter the church grounds, you see a gallery around the inner square which displays many mosaic art pieces which all represent Mary. Each mosaic work has been donated by a different country in the world. This modern church consists of two floors: the ground floor with a lower area containing the grotto and the first floor where the most beautiful mosaics are displayed. The art piece of Japan shows a Japanese Mary with a Japanese Jesus, this is a very special interpretation of bringing religion closer to the hearts of the Japanese people.

Nazareth was een kleine stad met ongeveer 200 inwoners. In deze Basiliek van de Maria Boodschap, vind je de grot waar Maria woonde samen met haar ouders. De legende vertelt ons dat de engel Gabriël, Maria verkondigde dat zij ging bevallen van een zoon die Jezus noemde. Meer dan 2000 jaar geleden bestonden er geen alleenstaande moeders, ze werden ter dood veroordeeld door steniging. Joseph die Maria reeds lang kende trouwde met haar. Dit redde niet alleen haar leven maar resulteerde ook in de creatie van het Christendom, één van de grootste godsdiensten ter wereld. In een latere fase van hun leven, na de terugkeer uit Egypte, leefden Joseph, Maria en Jezus ook in deze grotten in Nazareth. Dit is een enorm belangrijke pelgrimsplaats en in 427 werd hier een Byzantijnse kerk gebouwd bovenop de grot. Deze kerk en ook de 12de eeuwse kruisvaarderskerk werden vernietigd. De huidige Basiliek werd gebouwd in 1969. Als je de kerkgronden binnengaat zie je een overdekte galerij met mozaïeken kunstwerken gedoneerd door verschillende landen uit de wereld. De kerk zelf bestaat uit verschillende verdiepingen: op het gelijkvloers met een lager gelegen gedeelte vind je de grot, en op de eerste verdieping de mooiste mozaïekwerken. Het kunstwerk van Japan toont een Japanse Maria en Jezus, dit is een zeer opmerkelijke benadering die poogt de religie dichter te brengen in de harten van het Japanse volk..
