General Impressions of Guangzhou and difficulties to find our way

Before our China trip, we never heard about Guangzhou which was known to us as Canton. It was a city we had to stop in before taking our ferry to Hong Kong. It was however a 15 hour night train ride from Guilin. With some guidance we found the right stop train but Guangzhou was not the terminus. We had to step out on the right train station which doesn’t sound difficult but when everything is only in Chinese and there is no one on the train that understands any language, you have a problem. We knew at what time the train should arrive and we took the risk to get off. At was the right decision; luckily the distances between train stations were long enough.

The Guangzhou region is very big with more than 25 million inhabitants and difficult to get around. We booked a guide for the first day and he was going to meet us at the train but he was not there. People without ticket were not allowed in the train station so he was waiting at the exit together with a few thousand others. We had a Dim Sum breakfast together, a local speciality. In Canton people like to eat, the guide said: “In Canton we eat everything with four legs expect the table”. A good start of the day.

Our pictures give you some impressions of this enormous city. We visited museums, gardens, a temple and a craft atelier. The big tower was our hotel; it was located next to the river with a nice walking promenade. The next day we will take the ferry to Hong Kong.

Voor onze reis door China hadden we nog nooit gehoord over Guangzhou dat ons meer bekend was als Kanton. Het is een stad die we tussendoor bezochten vooraleer de ferry naar Hong Kong te nemen. Eerst moesten we wel een 15 uur durende nachrit op een trein van Guilin doorstaan. Met wat hulp vonden we de juiste trein maar Guangzhou maar dit was niet de eindbestemming. Afstappen op het juiste station was niet gemakkelijk daar alles in het Chinees was aangeduid en niemand in de trein enige andere taal sprak. We wisten de aankomsttijd en stapten op goed geluk af, het was het juiste station. Gelukkig waren de afstanden tussen de steden zo groot dat de beslissing iets gemakkelijker was.

De Kanton regio is dicht bevolkt met meer als 25 miljoen inwoners en het is moeilijk om je in de stad te verplaatsen. Om het ons wat makkelijker te maken boekten we een gids waarmee we hadden afgesproken aan de trein, maar hij stond er niet. Zonder vervoersbewijs werden bezoekers niet in het station toegelaten en hij wachtte ons op met enkele duizenden andere mensen aan de uitgang. Samen gingen we een Dim Sum ontbijt nuttigen, een lokale specialiteit. In Kanton houden de mensen van eten, onze gids zei: “In Kanton eten we alles op vier poten behalve de tafel”. Een goede start van de dag.

Onze foto’s geven enkele indrukken van deze enorm grote stad. We bezochten enkele musea, tuinen, een tempel en een ambachten atelier. De hoge toren gelegen naast de rivier was ons hotel. Het was leuk wandelen op de rivierpromenade. De voldende dag namen we de ferry naar Hong Kong.

A river cruise on the Xi River (Li River) from Guilin

Since this is such a special region in China with its Karst Mountains, we decided to take a river cruise on the Xi River and enjoy the landscape. The first two hours this was a great experience but unfortunately after half a day, it gets really boring. Don’t forget something to read when you do this.

Next to the mountains and the local population we liked the views of small cruise vessels with their kitchen at the back of the boat. It was a funny sight but you think twice before eating your lunch because we had a similar kitchen. We carefully selected items we considered safe to avoid stomach problems.

Daar dit zo’n unieke regio is in China met zijn karstbergen, besloten we een rivier cruise te maken op de Xi en te genieten van het landschap. De eerste twee uren was dit een fantastische ervaring maar na een halve dag werd het toch zeer saai. Vergeet niet een goed boek mee te nemen.

Behalve de bergen en de locale bevolking, genoten we ook van het zicht op de keuken van gelijkaardige cruiseboten als de onze. Het was een grappig zicht maar je denkt toch twee maal na vooraleer je middagmaal te eten. Voorzichtig selecteerden we de meest veilige ingredienten om maagproblemen te vermijden.

General Impressions of Guilin and its Karst mountains

We are travelling on our own in China and Guilin, a city with about 5 million inhabitants is not so touristic. People who understand English or French are hard to find and the locals look at us as if we were aliens. Sometimes you even see people walking backwards when we arrive. I am 1m 95cm tall and Kristel 1m 80cm, many Chinese want to take pictures together. We get this request a few times an hour.

It is strange to see these Karst Mountains rise up in the middle of the city which is split by the Xi River. Fishing colmorants are bound to a raft waiting for their masters. I don’t know if I should pity the birds or the fisherman on the raft?

At the Fir Lake of Guilin, you find two tall pagodas, one blue red and the other in gold colours. There is water everywhere in the city and parks are well maintained. We like the bridges and sometimes the imitations of western architecture. In some street in can be very busy and people hold up umbrellas to protect them against the sun.

Besides fireworks, the Chinese also like flashy lights. Many buildings and bridges are decorated with coloured lights which are switched on at night.

We zijn alleen aan het reizen door China wat niet altijd gemakkelijk is. Guilin telt ongeveer 5 miljoen inwoners en is niet zo toeristisch. Het vinden van mensen op straat die wat Engels of Frans spreken is zeer moeilijk. De lokale bevolking kijkt ons aan alsof we van een andere planeet komen. Soms wandelen mensen zelfs achteruit als ze ons zien. Ik ben 1m95 en Kristel 1m80 waardoor vele Chinezen met ons op de foto willen. We krijgen dit verzoek enkele keren per uur.

Het is raar om de kalkbergen in het midden van de stad te zien. Guilin is opgesplitst door de Xi Rivier waarop veel gevist wordt. Vissers samen met hun aalscholvers en een vlot hebben hier nog een zware taak. Met wie moeten wij we het meeste medelijden hebben, de visser of de vastgebonden vogel?

Naast het Fir Meer staan twee hoge pagodes, een blauw rode en een goud gekleurde. Overal vind je water in de stad en parken zijn goed onderhouden. De bruggen zijn mooi en de imitaties van westerse architectuur wel grappig. In sommige straten kan het heel druk worden en zeker als mensen hun parasol boven halen om zich te beschermen tegen de brandende zon. 

Naast vuurwerk houden Chinezen ook van felle lichtjes. Dit is zeer duidelijk in het straatbeeld eens het donker wordt.
