Flying CityJet Fokker 50 to London City airport, Rotterdam

The best way to fly from The Netherlands to London is from Rotterdam (The Hague) airport. For us the airport is close by, about 15km from our home and you arrive in London City Airport, close to the center of the UK capital. What more can you wish for.

We booked KLM but the flight was executed by CityJet with a Fokker 50 propeller plane. A nice experience to fly such a small propeller aircraft made by the former Dutch company Fokker. The sound is completely different and it flies slower. The trip is however short, just crossing the North Sea and you are in London.

De meest efficiënte wijze om van Nederland naar Londen te reizen is vanaf Rotterdam (Den Haag) luchthaven. Voor ons is dit heel dichtbij gelegen op ongeveer 15km van huis en je komt aan in London City Airport, in het centrum van Londen zelf. Wat kan je nog meer wensen? 

We boekten een KLM maar de vlucht werd uitgevoerd door CityJet met een Fokker 50 schroefvliegtuig. Een leuke ervaring met zo'n klein propeller toestel te vliegen, gemaakt door de voormalige Hollandse maatschappij Fokker. Het motor geluid is volledig anders en we vliegen trager. De vlucht is echter kort, juist over de Noordzee vliegen en je bent in Londen.

Amazing Thailand - Surin Beach after the big clean-up, Phuket

Suring Beach is one of the most popular beaches of Phuket with top clubs, bars and restaurants. The international and local businesses went so far to build bars and restaurants directly on the sand. The trees were not cut but buildings constructed around it. This all stopped in 2014 when the new government decided it had to be removed. When I first read this, I couldn’t believe it and thought Surin Beach would lose its appeal. Nothing is less true.

You still can enjoy the restaurants and clubs on the other side of the street but the beach is now pure. You can walk in the sand and swim in the sea. It is no longer a private beach exploited by the hotels but everyone can enjoy it. We remember some hotels charging almost 100 euro a day for a luxury chair on the beach now anyone can sit here for free. We think it is a positive development and enjoyed the sun. I was trying my waterproof camera in the sea and got some nice shots.

Surin Beach is één van de meest populaire stranden van Phuket met top clubs, bars en restaurants. De internationale en lokale horeca bedrijven gingen zo ver dat ze bars en restaurants op het strand hebben gebouwd. De bomen werden niet gerooid maar de constructies er rond geplaatst. Dit alles kwam tot een eind in 2014 toen de nieuwe overheid besloot deze te laten slopen. De eerste keer dat we dit in de krant lazen, dachten we dat Surin Beach zijn aantrekkingskracht zou verliezen. Niets is minder waar. 

Je kan nog steeds genieten van restaurants en bars aan de overzijde van de straat, vlak aan het pure strand. Hier kan je nu wandelen op het zand of zwemmen in de zee. Het is niet langer een privé strand uitgebuit door exclusieve hotels maar iedereen kan er van genieten. We herinneren ons nog dat er per dag tot 100 euro werd gevraagd voor een luxe ligstoel. We zien dit als een positieve evolutie en genoten van de zon. Ik probeerde mij waterdichte camera uit en dit leverde enkele mooie foto’s op.

Watsuwankhuha Cave and monkeys, Phang Nga

Phang Nga is located north of Phuket island. It is possible to reach it by car via a connection bridge. The drive from Phuket Town or Patong Beach to this cave in Phang Nga is about two hours, on your way there are many other stops worth visiting.

Let's start with the Watsuwankhuha Temple and children’s school. The architecture is similar to other temples but nothing special. There can be many tourists but they all want to visit the cave. In this cave you find a large reclining Buddha. A monk prays for the visitors and blesses them.

The main reasons why people come here are the wild monkeys. They climb the rock, trees and approach all visitors. They are not scared, on the contrary, take care of your stuff. Before you know it, the grab your bag in the search for food or things to play with. Everyone gives them food so they cannot be hungry.

Phang Nga is net ten noorden van Phuket gelegen. Je kan het per auto bereiken via een brug naar het vaste land. De rit van Phuket Stad of Patong Beach naar Phang Nga neemt ongeveer twee uren in beslag. Onderweg kan je eenvoudig een paar keer stoppen aan bezienswaardigheden.

Laat ons beginnen bij de Watsuwankhuha tempel en basisschool. De architectuur is gelijkaardig als bij andere tempels. Er zijn hier heel veel toeristen maar deze willen allemaal de grot bezoeken. In deze grot vind je een grote liggende Boeddha. Monniken bidden en zegenen bezoekers die hier open voor zijn. 

De hoofdreden waarom mensen hier komen zijn de wilde apen. Ze klimmen op de rotsen, bomen en benaderen alle bezoekers. Ze hebben geen schrik, zelfs het tegenovergestelde, ze kunnen brutaal uit de hoek komen. Pas op dat ze het eten niet uit je handen trekken of met je spullen weg zijn. Alles waarmee kan gespeeld worden is aantrekkelijk. Deze apen hebben zeker geen honger, ze worden door alle bezoekers gevoed.
