A great day trip with Castlexperience Wine Tours, Barcelona

As wine lovers, we occasionally try to participate in wine tastings or go on a wine tour. The day trip that Castlexperience from Barcelona was offering seemed perfect. It turned out to be a great excursion with lots of sun, food and wine.

Castlexperience offers tours in small groups with guaranteed departures. They visit amazing places which are not touristic. We were lucky and got a private van with personal guide. As customers we got all possible flexibility to adjust the time planning to our wishes.

First we stopped at Ca n'Estella, which is known for its Cava production. They receive many awards for Cava wines and started this business in the late 19th century. We began the visit with a Rosé Cava on the courtyard, receiving information about the harvest and fermentation process. The huge modern tanks control temperatures for a perfect production process. The owner came to greet us and showed us her house and Cava cellar. On the terrace we were served excellent tapas accompanied by a white Clot dels Oms wine. We end this visit with a glass of Premium Cava and a walk in the vineyards.

The driver took a very nice route with views on the mountains of Montserrat. We stopped at the Oller del Mas golf course for lunch. The three course Catalan menu was interesting and of good quality. We selected beans with Iberic Ham, an Iberian omelet with spring onions, a lasagna, chicken filet and pork cheeks. Even though it was only around 20 degrees, the sun was strong and turned our faces completely red.

During our next stop we visited the Oller del Mas castle from the 10th century. This family already produces wine for 36 generations. We visited the production factory where they explained grape selection tools, visiting the castle towers overlooking the vineyards and the cellars. The master of the wine production introduced us in the world of wooden barrels and their impact on the final product. Some barrels had an influence on the smoothness in your mouth, others influenced more the aroma. We could taste the difference directly from samples taken directly from the barrels. What an experience.

In this castle we tasted three wines. A unique wine variety which was rediscovered by this house using Piccapol Negre grapes. From the first bottle, they only produced 375 pieces that year, talking about an exclusive product. The other two wines were a blend of Piccapol Negre and Merlot. We enjoyed the tasting in a small circular tower of more than a thousand years old.

After this last visit, our guide Viktor drove us back to Barcelona. He and Castlexperience offered us a great day trip and we strongly recommend this company when you consider going on a wine tour in the region of Barcelona.
