Amazing Matanuska Glacier, Matsu Valley, Alaska

There are many glaciers in Alaska. They come in all kind of shapes and colors. Some of them are grey, brown, black but the most impressive are the white ice ones. Matanuska has plenty of white ice and rough peaks. It is an amazing place to go for a hike on your own or with a tour. We would however recommend to wear crampons. You can buy them for a small price in any large sport shop.

Most glaciers are hard to be reached. You have to take a plane or helicopter and this is expensive. The Matanuska Glacier is accessible by car from the Glenn Highway, milepost 102. Don't get discouraged to find the dirt road heading to the glacier, it is easy to miss it. Just focus on mile 102. Coming from Anchorage the road is on your right side.

The glacier access is on private land so you have to pay a small fee to the owners to drive up to it. Walking is impossible due to the distance. They also prepare the first part towards the ice so that hiker do not have to step in the mud. Walking between these ice bergs and over huge cracks makes you feel small. The Matanuska Glacier is about 40km long and the ice is at some places 4km deep. This was an amazing adventure.
