National Library in Quito, a fusion of modern and classic architecture

Looking at the National Library book collection in Quito, you realise that the local population doesn't read that much. The architecture of the building and the gardens are however extraordinary.

The first two floors of the historical building were preserved and were covered with a metal glass triangle ceiling. A fusion of modern art with a classic arched building. The staircases take it a step further in combining different architectural styles.

Als je naar de boekencollectie van de Nationale Bibliotheek van Quito kijkt, besef je dat de lokale bevolking niet veel boeken leest. De architectuur van het gebouw en de tuinen zijn echter buitengewoon. 

De eerste twee verdiepingen van het historische gebouw zijn goed bewaard en werden afgewerkt met een metalen glazen piramide. Een fusie tussen moderne kunst en klassiek geboogwelfde gangen. De trappenhal drijft de mix van stijlen nog een stukje verder.

The beautiful National library of Austria in Vienna

The National Library of Austria has the largest collection of the country which could be expected. It was built during the 18th century and is more than 200 years old. The most impressive area is the Prunksaal or the State Hall, whiich is almost 300 years old. The books are stored against the walls up to a high altitude, we like the movable staircases to assist rearders in collecting the works they would like to consult. The State Hall contains sculptures, frescoes, wall paintings, arches, and globes. On the roof of the building you see statues and a golden globe. For us this is most likely the most beautiful library we have ever seen.

De Nationale bibliotheek van Oostenrijk heeft de grootste boekencollectie van het land en dit kon men wel verwachten. De meeste delen werden gebouwd gedurende 18de eeuw en zijn meer als 200 jaar oud. Boeken staan gestapeld in rekken tegen de muur tot op grote hoogte. We kijken verbaast naar de verschuifbare trappen om lezers te helpen de boeken te raadplegen. De pronkzaal is ongelooflijk en is ongeveer 300 jaar oud, deze bevat beeldhouwwerken, fresco’s, schilderijen, sierbogen, en wereldbollen. Op het dak van de bibliotheek zie je verschillende beeldhouwwerken en een gouden wereldbol. Voor ons is dit waarschijnlijk de mooiste bibliotheek die we ooit gezien hebben..
