La Capila de la Bolsa restaurant in Madrid

What a fabulous setting for a restaurant. A small vintage Opera House which is now a high class restaurant. The walls and ceilings are in excellent state and changing coloured ambi lights improve the whole experience. On the podium stood a white piano. An experienced pianist plays relaxing pieces while you enjoy your food. The restaurant opens for lunch at 14:00, which is rather late for us but this is the normal in Spain.

We took the Gourmet Menu with prawn ceviche, herring, scallops, foie, partridge, lobster, ostrich and a chocolate mousse. An eight course menu which enabled us to taste all their specialties. The quality was reasonable and the menu was not expensive. We found it a pity that the level of the cuisine falls far below the prestige of the interior. They should work on this. Overall an ideal restaurant to have a romantic dinner.

Wat een fantastisch gebouw voor een restaurant. Het kleine historisch operahuis werd omgetoverd in een stijlvol hoogstaand restaurant. De muren en plafonds zijn in uitstekende staat en de in kleur wisselende sfeerverlichting verbeterd de atmosfeer. Op het podium staat een witte vleugelpiano waarop een ervaren pianist ontspannende muziek speelt. Het restaurant opent zijn deuren voor de lunch om 14:00 uur, wat heel laat voor ons is maar normaal in Spanje. 

We kozen het Gastronomische Menu met een garnalen ceviche, haring, eendenlever, patrijs, kreeft, struisvogel en een chocolade dessert. Het acht gangen menu vertegenwoordigde alle specialiteiten van het huis dus konden we alles proeven. De kwaliteit was redelijk en het menu was niet duur. We vonden het spijtig dat het niveau van de keuken ver beneden de uitstraling van het etablissement lag. Hieraan zou men toch moeten werken. In het algemeen is dit een ideaal restaurant voor een romantisch uitje.

The Sydney of the Atlantic or the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz

This modern concert building in Santa Cruz has a similar shape as the Sydney Opera House, from there its nick name, Sydney of the Atlantic. We are not surprised this is the most photographed building of the Canary Islands. It's a clearly visible landmark and draws the attention of every tourist visiting the capital of Tenerife.

The building was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava Valls and it opened the doors for the first time in 2003. The white curved arch above the auditorium is just spectacular and we wonder how this can stay erect in this place. One should not forget that the winds can be extreme at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

Inside, next to the concert hall, there was an art exhibition and a small bar. To protect the auditorium against breaking waves, a wide rock bank has been erected. On many of the rocks you see painted faces of celebrities. We recognised Rod Steward, Tina Turner and Shakira.

Dit modern concertgebouw in Santa Cruz heeft dezelfde vorm als het Sydney Opera House, vandaar zijn bijnaam, de "Sydney of the Atlantic". We waren niet verbaasd dat dit het meest gefotografeerde gebouw is van de Canarische Eilanden. Het is een duidelijk zichtbaar architecturaal hoogstandje en trekt de aandacht van elke toerist die de hoofdstad van Tenerife bezoekt.

Het gebouw werd ontworpen door architect Santiago Calatrava Valls en opende zijn deuren voor het eerst in 2003. De witte boog boven het auditorium is gewoon spectaculair en we vragen ons af hoe hij recht kan blijven staan op deze plaats. Men mag niet vergeten dat het aan de Atlantische Oceaan heel hard kan waaien. 

Binnen aan de concerthal was er een kunsttentoonstelling en een drankgelegenheid. Om het gebouw te beschermen tegen de brekende golfslag van de oceaan, is er een wijde golfbreker uit individuele rotsblokken aangelegd. Op vele stenen staan hoofden van beroemdheden geschilderd. Hier tussen herkenden we Rod Steward, Tina Turner en Shakira.
