The methodist church of Philipsburg, St. Maarten

This church is sometimes referred to as the Old Enlgish church or the Wesleyan church. The first church on this location was built in 1851 and in 1978 replaced bu this beautifull wooden masterpiece. There are alomst no art elements inside but the church provides a warm ambience. We like the white blue doors and window covers.

Deze kerk wordt ook wel eens de Oude Engelse kerk of Wesleyan kerk genoemd. Het eerste kerkgebouw werd opgetrokken in 1851 en later in 1978 vervangen door het huidige houten meesterwerk. Binnen vind je bijna geen kunst maar de kerk is warm en gezellig. We houden van de donker bruine kleur in combinatie met witte deuren en raamluiken..

Many big cruise ships in the port of St. Maarten

The cruise port of St. Maarten is a little bit outside the city centre of Philipsburg and its beach. It is a 15 minute walk or you could take a water taxi. The water taxi seemed a lot of fun so we gave it a try. It drops you right on the beach in front of the court house.

We were not alone in St. Maarten, there were four super ships: the Celebrity Eclipse, the Norwegian Sun, the Ruby Princess and the Oasis of the Seas from Royal Caribbean. In total more than 15.000 passengers visiting the island. Cruising must boost the local economy during the top season.

De haven van St. Maarten ligt buiten het stadscentrum van Philipsburg en zijn strand. Te voet bereik je jouw bestemming in ongeveer 15 minuten, je kan ook een watertaxi nemen. Dat leek ons zeer leuk dus viel onze keuze op de watertaxi. Je wordt op het strand recht voor het gerechtshof aan wal gebracht. 

We zijn niet alleen in St. Maarten. Vier grote cruise schepen waren van de partij: de Celebrity Eclipse, de Norwegian Sun, de Ruby Princess en de Oasis of the Seas van Royal Caribbean. In totaliteit bezoeken er meer als 15.000 passagiers het eiland. Cruisen moet voor de lokale middenstand een duwtje in de rug zijn..

General Impressions of St. Maarten, one of our favourite islands of the Caribbean

St. Maarten is one of the Dutch Antilles and one of our favourite islands because of the pleasant atmosphere and Maho Beach, as described in one of our previous articles. It is a major cruise port with high docking capacity. Many cruise ships come to this island and most of the time it is the last stop of a one week cruise before returning to Florida.

 Like on many Caribbean islands you see bars in the pirates themes on beach locations. There are many shopping opportunities, colourful restaurants and houses, a Hard Rock café, a Casino and some much more. This is an inland to relax and enjoy the sun.

St. Maarten is een eiland van de Nederlandse Antillen en één van onze favoriete eilanden in het Caraïbisch gebied omwille van de sfeer en de vliegtuigen op Maho Beach, zoals beschreven in een vorig artikel. De haven heeft een heel grote capaciteit. Vele cruise schepen bezoeken dit St. Maarten als laatste stop in hun één weekse cruise vooraleer terug te varen naar Florida. 

Zoals vele Caraïbische eilanden vind je bars in piraten thema’s op het strand. Er zijn volop shopping mogelijkheden, kleurrijke restaurants en huizen, een Hard Rock Café, een casino en nog veel meer. Dit is een eiland om te ontspannen en van de zon te genieten..
