Urban Center in Bologna library, the child room

The library located at Piazza Maggiori is an amazing building which combines the original elements like the painted ceiling with modern additions like a glass floor. On the top floor you find the Urban Center where visitors are invited to use electronic tools to get to know certain subject matters and areas of the city. You also see the old technology of blackboard classrooms.

On the ground floor there was an exhibition covering child bedrooms and toys from 1900 till 1950. Most of it was made out of wood and we recognised even a Pinocchio doll. The most intriguing for me was a small carousel holding wooden planes.

The Black Pearl of Bologna, Piazza Maggiore

Translating the name of this square would be “Big Square” what we could call the Main Square or the most important place in the city of Bologna. It’s built up by palaces and in the middle, the St. Petrus Basilica which was unfortunately under renovation works when we were there.

In our opinion, the most interesting architectural monuments are the clock tower of the Palazzo d’Accursio, Neptune’s fountain and the library. Most likely the Basilica is more impressive but we could not see a lot of it. This square shows us the dominating brown colored stones used to construct the city of Bologna. It makes it all a bit dark, that’s why we gave it the title, the Black Pearl of Bologna.
