Billboards and advertising on Plaza del Callao, Madrid

Looking at the tile which holds the name Plaza del Callao, we see a port in the 19th century with mountains and sea ships in battle. This must be referring to a see battle in the previous colony of Peru. Port of Callao is the harbour of Lima and the most important port of South America. Lima is located in front of the Andes mountain range.

This square is far away from this historic event. We are here in the commercial heart of Madrid. High rise buildings hold electronic billboards and bombard you with advertisements. The contrast between the so called cool modern world and the historic city could not be larger. The cinema theatre has the most impressive light panels of the square.

Op de ceramische muurtegel met de omschrijving Plaza del Callao zien we een 19de eeuwse zeeslag in een haven aan een bergketen. Dit moet wel refereren naar een zeeslag in de voormalige kolonie Peru. De haven van Callao is in feite Lima, de belangrijkste haven van Zuid-Amerika, die gelegen is aan de Andes. 

Het plein is echter heel ver verwijderd van deze historische gebeurtenissen. Hier zijn we in het commerciële hart van Madrid. Lichtreclames opgehangen aan torenflats bombarderen voorbijgangers met publiciteit. Het contrast tussen de Coole moderne wereld en de prachtige antieke gebouwen kon niet groter zijn. De bioscoop op Plaza del Callao heeft de meest indrukwekkende billboards.
