Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, the way of living before the discovery of oil

About 50 years ago, before the discovery of oil, Abu Dhabi was just a small town at the border of the dessert as you can see on the black and white picture taken in the museum of the Heritage Village. This open air museum shows visitors how people lived in their wooden houses and tents. Trade and handcrafts were very important. You see demonstrations in wood carving, carpet weaving, and glass blowing. An Arabic boy proudly poses with a hawk, one of the national symbols of the United Arab Emirates. On the beach of the heritage village you see the new Abu Dhabi on the other side of the bay. What a development in five decennia.

  1. It is so good that they have kept their history like this. It must be a culture shock for people over 50. Lovely photos. especially of the boy and his bird and your better half with the modern city and clear blue water. We touched down at Abu Dhabi on the way to Europe in the 70's. All I remember was the amazing tied mosaic buildings of the airport. But I guess that has all changed now.
