Going deep in the harbour of Rotterdam to see the Maeslantkering

We are on a discovery trip in the harbour of Rotterdam and while we were looking for the Maeslantkering me made a small stop at an enormous red buoy. At the Maeslantkering, I take out my tripod for some experimental HDR pictures. On some pictures we succeeded to have clear sharp foreground, water and sky.

The Maeslantkering is a high technology water construction to protect The Netherlands from flooding during extreme high water levels. The giant movable locks that stop the water from flowing into the Rotterdam area are part of the Delta works and protect millions of people. More than one third of the country is below sea level.

The total cost of the Maeslantkering was about 450 million euro. A permanent closed construction was not possible because the “Nieuwe Waterweg” is an extreme busy water way with more than 100.000 ships a year. It takes about 2,5 hours to close the giant gates. The Maeslantkering was built in 1997 and until now the Port of Rotterdam has closed it one time due to weather conditions.

  6. Quite ingenious! If it works to protect millions of people from floods then it's definitely worth the cost.

  9. Quite an impressive gate Filip! I can see why they would only close it when absolutely necessary! Oh, and if you ever do decide to go to Glacier park, I have been there many times and could give you some pointers on the most beautiful parts. Have a wonderful day
