Different kinds of graffiti in London

Graffiti is rare in London. We assume the city is removing it quickly or only tolerates real street art for which a permit has been requested. The first pictures show you a normal type of graffiti you see in many cities. These predominantly faces, painted on iron blinds of shops.

The other examples are from mosaics in the underground, high level advertising on shop windows and last but not least, a full facade of labor union party protests.

Graffiti komt niet veel voor in Londen. We veronderstellen dat de stad het zeer snel verwijderd en enkel echte kunst toelaat waarvoor een vergunning is uitgeschreven. De eerste foto's tonen gemiddelde graffiti die veelvuldig voorkomen in steden. Het zijn voornamelijk gezichten die op ijzeren beschermplaten van winkels zijn aangebracht. 

De andere voorbeelden zijn mozaïeken in de metro, hoog niveau reclame op winkelvensters en als laatste, een volledige gevel met vakbondsprotesten.

From classic to modern style, the Eberhard church in Stuttgart

The Eberhard church is located in the shopping heart of Stuttgart, the Konigstrasse. We found it already strange to find a church here. It was constructed in 1811 and the development of the city centre followed. The church looks so new and modern because it was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt in 1955.

At first sight you are confronted with a cold white interior but with a closer look you appreciate the modern art behind the altar. The giant mosaics have a dominant position in the church. A silver organ and glass cylinder shaped lights speak to the imagination.

De Eberhard kerk is gelegen in het commerciële hart van Stuttgart, de Konigstrasse. We vonden het reeds raar hier een kerk te vinden. Ze werd gebouwd in 1811 en het winkelgebied ontwikkelde zich verder in de nabij gelegen straten. Door de vernietiging van de Eberhard kerk tijdens WOII zien we hier nu een moderne versie gebouwd in 1955. 

Op het eerste zicht worden bezoekers geconfronteerd met een koud wit interieur maar na enkele minuten begin je de moderne kunst achter het altaar te appreciëren. Enorme mozaïeken lijken alom tegenwoordig door hun dominante positie. Het zilveren orgel en glazen cilinderlichten spreken tot de verbeelding.

Small Hagia Sophia mosque, Istanbul

This 500 year old mosque was originally a Byzantine church. It is know as the small replica of the real Hagia Sophia but we only see a little resemblance of the exterior. The garden around the mosque is exceptional for a big city as Istanbul, most city mosques only have an inner square. The front garden wall holds a series of elegant towers.

The interior of the Small Hagia Sophia is however amazing. The mosque is completely renovated and still contains original marble columns. The grey and blue mosaics are just magical, you enter a dream world. We think the renovation is a huge success.

Deze 500 jaar oude moskee was oorspronkelijk een Byzantijnse kerk. Ze staat bekend als de kleine versie van de echte Hagia Sophia moskee maar wij zien enkel een minieme gelijkenis aan de buitenzijde. De tuin is uitzonderlijk voor een stadsmoskee, meestal vind je er enkel een binnenplein. Op de tuinmuur staan elegante torentjes. 

Het interieur van de Kleine Hagia Sophia is verbazingwekkend. De moskee is volledig gerenoveerd en de marmeren zuilen zijn nog steeds origineel. De grijs blauwe mozaïeken lijken magisch, je waant je in een droomwereld. We vinden de renovatie zeer geslaagd..

The blue mosaic wall of the Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Mosque, Istanbul

This small mosque in the old city of Istanbul was built in 1571 by Mimar Sinan. The mosque has an inner square surrounded by low galleries holding little domes. In the middle of the square men can wash before entering the mosque for their praying sessions.

For me, the only interesting and unique part of the mosque was the blue wall you face when entering. The detailed mosaics are great as also the ceiling. I have take make the remark that this was the only mosque in Istanbul were we were not really welcome. One of the people working in the main hall requested me to leave although it was not during praying time. I would not recommend you to visit the Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Mosque.

Deze kleine moskee in het oude stadscentrum van Istanboel werd gebouwd in 1571 door Minar Sinan. De moskee heeft een binnenplein omringt door galerijen waarop lage koepels staan. In het midden van het plein kunnen mannen zich wassen vooraleer hun gebed aan te vangen. 

Voor mij was de blauwe muur die je bij het binnenkomen van de moskee ziet een uniek kunstwerk. De mozaïeken zijn zeer gedetailleerd en het plafond is ook mooi. Voor de volledigheid dien ik wel te vermelden dat dit de enige moskee in Istanboel was waar we niet echt welkom waren. Iemand die in de hal van de moskee aan het werk was vroeg me de moskee te verlaten niet tegenstaande dat het geen gebedstijd was. Ik zou niet aanraden de Sokullu Mehmet Pasa moskee te bezoeken..
