The facade of the cathedral is dark brown red and on the top of the roof there are some colored statues. The church looks strong but is not really inviting. An entrance fee is obligatory. Inside the cathedral you are not allowed to take any pictures and this is strictly enforced by security guards. The church is still worth a visit.
After the harsh colonial and religious regime of the Spaniards, the Inca believe has completely disappeared and the Cusco population is after a few centuries fully devoted to the Roman Catholic Church. The spirit was follow our God or die. Today all masses are full and people queue outside until the cathedral opens. We have difficulties to understand this.
Voor ons is Santa Domingo kathedraal gelegen op Plaza de Armas alhoewel het officiële adres van deze kerk daterende uit de 17de eeuw, Avenida de Sol is. De kathedraal is in feite een samenvoeging van twee kerken. Zoals bijna ieder Rooms Katholiek gebouw werd ook deze opgetrokken bovenop een Inka tempel, Kiswarkancha.
De gevel is donker bruin rood en aan de bovenzijde staan enkele gekleurde beeldjes. De kerk ziet er heel robuust uit en is niet uitnodigend. Voor een bezoek dien je toegang te betalen. Binnen in de kathedraal mogen geen foto's getrokken worden en dit wordt strikt gecontroleerd door beveiligingsagenten. Toch is het een bezoek waard.
Tijdens het harde koloniaal en religieus schrikbewind van de Spanjaarden werd het Inka geloof volledig uitgeroeid en de bevolking van Cusco is enkele eeuwen later volledig toegewijd aan de Rooms Katholieke kerk. De gedachte was, volg onze God of sterf, letterlijk dan. Vandaag zit de kerk vol tijdens alle misvieringen en mensen staan buiten te wachten tegen dat de kathedraal open gaat. We hebben moeilijkheden dit te begrijpen.
