Quarter Final in the WDSF Paris Open Senior I Standard

This weekend we danced in Paris a WDSF World Ranking competition. At the start there were 35 couples from 9 different countries. It was a high level competition, in the final the first four couples are ranked in the top ten of the world.

The first round was danced in three heats and we were impressed with the quality on the floor when we didn't dance ourselves. Hoping to be noticed by the judges and to our surprise we received 57 markings out of 65 to reach the second round. Unfortunately this was one marking short for a direct qualification.

In our redance we performed a weaker. The first round absorbed so much of our energy and we were disappointed. Nevertheless we scored well with 52 markings out of 65. We danced a great quarter final and finished the competition in place 21 out of 35 couples. We look back at the Paris Open with a good feeling.

Dit weekend dansten we in Parijs een WDSF Wereldranking competitie. Er waren 35 paren uit 9 landen aan de start. Een competitie van heel hoog niveau, de eerste vier paren stonden allen in de top tien van de wereldranking.

De eerste ronde werd gedanst in drie reeksen en we waren onder de indruk van de danskwaliteit toen we zelf niet op de vloer stonden. Hopende dat de jury ons toch zou opmerken waren we positief verrast 57 doorplaatsingen te krijgen uit een maximum van 65. Spijtig genoeg was dit één markering te weinig voor directe kwalificatie. 

Tijdens onze herkansing dansten we zwakker. De eerste had zoveel energie van ons gevergd, het was teleurstellend. Niet tegenstaande scoorden we goed met 52 plaatsingen van de 65. We dansten een veel betere kwartfinale en eindigden de competitie in plaats 21 van 35 paren. We kunnen terug kijken op de Paris Open met een goed gevoel.

Dancing in a church “The Nook Championship”, Noordhoek

This world ranking event in Noordhoek, The Netherlands, was a special experience for us. First for the location, it was in our home country and secondly, it was in a church. Yes, you read it correctly a world ranking Standard and Latin competition in a church. All chairs were removed and a wooden floor was put in the ship of the St. Joseph church. A few weeks ago we were in Riga and Kristel was not allowed to enter the church without a scarf. Here the Latin competitors show and shake their sexy curves, half naked in the house of God. The difference could not be bigger but let’s go back to our discipline the Standard (Modern) dances.

We had many training sessions this week in preparation of The Nook Championship in which we tried to set our technical goals. We could implement our focus points, our floorcraft and musicality was above our expectations.

It was a special feeling to dance in a church. The floor was not as large as in other WDSF competition but the acoustic of the music was perfect. That’s what we call compact dancing in heave traffic because in the first round we had 10 couples together on the floor. We had to dance a second round to make it to the final. We were very happy to make it to the final and reach the 6th place. Our best position ever in a WDSF competition, this is boosting our World Ranking position to place 77.

Deze wereld ranking competitie in Noordhoek, Nederland, was heel speciaal voor ons. Eerst omwille van de korte afstand, het was in ons thuisland, en ten tweede het werd georganiseerd in een kerk. Ja, je leest het correct, een danswedstrijd Standaard en Latin in een kerk. Alle stoelen werden verwijderd en een houten vloer gelegd in het middenschip van de St. Jozefkerk. Een paar weken geleden waren we in Riga en Kristel mocht de kerk niet binnentreden zonder hoofddoek. Hier tonen en bewegen de Latin dansers half naakt hun sexy rondingen in het Huis van God. Het onderscheid kan niet groter zijn maar laat ons terug gaan naar onze dansstijl, het standaard dansen.

In de vele trainingssessies deze week ter voorbereiding van het Nook Kampioenschap probeerden we onze technische doelstellingen vast te leggen. We hebben deze kunnen uitvoeren en onze floorcraft en muzikaliteit waren boven ons verwachtingspatroon. 

Het was een uniek gevoel te dansen in een kerk. De dansvloer was niet zo groot als bij andere WDSF competities maar de akoestiek van de muziek was perfect. Dit is compact dansen met tien paren tegelijkertijd op de vloer in de eerste ronde. We dienden echter nog een keer te dansen voor de finale te bereiken. We waren heel blij te eindigen op de 6de plaats onze beste positie ooit in een WDSF wedstrijd. Hiermee komen we op plaats 77 van de wereldranking.

Second round in the Baltic Open Senior I standard, Riga

After a two month break of competitive dancing, we travelled to Riga last weekend for the Baltic Open. A major World Ranking event of three days and more than 2.000 couples. It was our first visit to Latvia. We were lucky with the weather since it was about zero degrees. Normally it should be ten degrees colder this time of the year.

We have to congratulate the organisation because the event halls were heated to perfection. After a warming-up session we danced our first round in a very strong field. Our dancing quality reached our expected level and we made it to the second round. In the second round we tried again but could not go further. Overall a good feeling to be dancing again on a competitive level.

Na een competitieve pauze van twee maand, reisden we naar Riga voor deel te nemen in de Baltic Open. Een groot wereldranking evenement over drie dagen waarbij er meer als 2.000 dansparen ingeschreven zijn. Het was ons eerste bezoek aan Letland. Met temperaturen rond het vriespunt hadden we geluk. Normaal is het hier deze tijd van het jaar ongeveer tien graden kouder. 

We moeten de organisatoren feliciteren met de inrichting van verwarming van de danshallen, het was gewoon de ideale temperatuur. Na het opwarmen en indansen begonnen we aan de eerste ronde in een heel sterk veld. Onze danskwaliteit lag binnen het verwachtingspatroon en we waren doorgeplaatst naar de tweede ronde. Dit was ook onze laatste ronde. In het algemeen hadden we een goed gevoel over ons dansen op een hoog internationaal niveau.

Our Ballroom Dance Demo at “Fons en Willy Dansen” in Zoetermeer

The owners of dance school “Fons en Willy Dansen” requested us to give a dance demonstration at their Christmas ball. We know them already for 9 years and it was an honour they requested us for this great gala evening. Since we didn’t give a demo before, we had to adjust our programs for the size of the dance floor and add intro’s. For this we received support from our dance teachers Herman and Michele Lak.

In the video below recorded by a guest of the dance school you see our four dances in the following sequence: Tango, Quickstep, Slow fox and we end the English Waltz. It was the first time since long that our parents were present on one of our dance events and they enjoyed it. We would like to thank Fons and Willy for the confidence and the practice facilities they are offering to us since years.

De eigenaars van dansschool “Fons en Willy Dansen” vroegen ons een dansdemonstratie te geven op hun Kerstbal. We kennen hen reeds 9 jaar en we vonden het een eer dat ze ons vroegen voor hun grote gala avond. Daar we nog niet eerder een demo gegeven hadden dienden we onze programma’s aan de dansvloer aan te passen alsook intro’s toe te voegen. Hiervoor kregen we steun van onze leraren Herman en Michele Lak.

Het was reeds een tijdje geleden dat onze ouders bij een dansevenement aanwezig waren. Ze hebben zich goed geamuseerd. We willen Fons en Willy nog bedanken voor het vertrouwen en de trainingsmogelijkheden die ze ons reeds jaren aanbieden.
