Saphir Cup 2016 – WDSF Senior I Standard, Paris

This weekend we danced the WDSF Senior I Standard in Paris, a very good competition organised by Marc Couderc. We were surprised of the large number spectators, the venue grandstand was completely full. International competitors coming from all over Europe were cheered on by the crowd.

In our first round we could execute our main attention points and brought a quality aligned with our technical skill level. Since we started dancing intensively again since October, our physical shape is improving. The judges marked us 37 times out of 45 to qualify for the semi-final.

In the semi-final we were happy with our performance and ended the competition on place 11. With this result we climbed a few places on the World Ranking to place 78.

WDSF Senior I Standard in the historical City Hall of Wuppertal

We just love to dance at this location in Germany. The “DanceComp” Wuppertal is attacking couples from all over the world and is one of the most prestigious dance competitions. We participated in the Senior I Standard and were at the start with 92 couples from about 20 different nations. The level was extremely high and we finished on place 55. We were pleased with our dance quality and happy to share a video on our blog.

Swiss International Dance Festival, Chiasso

This was our first World Ranking competition since two months. We registered for the WDSF Senior I standard in Chiasso, assuming to dance the Swiss International Dance Festival with couples from all over Europe. Since Chiasso is on the Italian border, almost all couples came from Italy. Italy is the strongest senior standard ballroom country in the world.

We saw this competition as preparation for our next dancing season and knew it would be difficult. Our goal was to focus on technique and to put our latest dance lessons into practice. After completing five dances, we were pleased with the quality. To our surprise we even qualified for the next round. This round was even better but our Swiss competition ended there. We are ready for Paris next week.

Dancing in the Vienna town hall (Rathaus)

We danced the WDSF Senior I Standard in Vienna and below you find a video summary of five dances in the Vienna Old Town hall. It was a special location and great experience to dance together with the top ranked couples in the world. It was a while ago that we saw a video of our dancing and are pleased with the result. Kristel is wearing here new blue ballroom dress. Currently we are ranked number 70 in the world.

A special thank you to Marc Van Breda and Anita Bosmans from Belgium, who stayed a few hours longer to record all our dances. Marc did a great job, recording us from different angles and also giving an impression of the beautiful town hall.

Danse Sportive International Marseille, WDSF Senior I standard

This weekend we danced the 20th Marseille International Open for the world ranking. Two tournaments in one weekend, organized by CADM (Club des Amateurs de Danse de Marseille). This is the second year in a row we participate here. The event is organised in “Palais des Sports” and the facilities are excellent.

After six weeks of recovery from a major surgery, Filip had to mentally and physically be strong to compete. We decided to participate because our flights, hotel and competition entry was paid months in advance. We saw it as a training session and agreed that if it was physically not possible to continue dancing we would withdraw from the competition during the first round. Our only goal was to finish the five dances on Saturday and Sunday.

To our surprise, we could bring quality on the floor. In both competitions we qualified for the second round with 51 markings out of 55. You could not believe how glad we were. In the first competition we became 13th out of 25 couples and the second competition 9th out of 20 couples. Both competitions awarded us more points for the world ranking.

Quarter Final in the WDSF Paris Open Senior I Standard

This weekend we danced in Paris a WDSF World Ranking competition. At the start there were 35 couples from 9 different countries. It was a high level competition, in the final the first four couples are ranked in the top ten of the world.

The first round was danced in three heats and we were impressed with the quality on the floor when we didn't dance ourselves. Hoping to be noticed by the judges and to our surprise we received 57 markings out of 65 to reach the second round. Unfortunately this was one marking short for a direct qualification.

In our redance we performed a weaker. The first round absorbed so much of our energy and we were disappointed. Nevertheless we scored well with 52 markings out of 65. We danced a great quarter final and finished the competition in place 21 out of 35 couples. We look back at the Paris Open with a good feeling.

Tijdens onze herkansing dansten we zwakker.

WDSF Senior I Standard – our Woodenshoe 2015 videos, Noordhoek

Yesterday we danced the WDSF Senior I Standard Woodenshoe in Noordhoek. The event took place in a church. It is always nice to dance in a special location. Thank you to Hans van der Zanden for recording our dances. It provides us good learning opportunities and memories for on the blog.

The recording are of the first round in which we dances up to a very good level. Our redance was even better and we progressed to the quarter final. Just like in Cambrils we end on place 13 with 12 coupes going to the semi-final. We were however very pleased with the dancing and the ranking out of 24 participating international couples. Hope you enjoy the videos of the Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slowfox and Quickstep.

Gisteren dansten we de WDSF Senior I standaard Woodenshoe in Noordhoek.

WDSF Senior I Standard, International Open Marseille

This weekend we danced two international competitions in Marseille. In both we reached the second round which was our goal. With this final result we are pleased.

We took the opportunity to put in some practice sessions before the start of the competition and focused on our lessons of the week. The level of competitors was extremely high with many of the world top ranked couples present. On Saturday we became 23rd and on Sunday 19th. We were happy with our dancing.

Malta Dance Sport Cup, WDSF Senior I Standard

For the second year in a row we participated in the Malta Dance Sport Cup at the SAS Radisson Hotel at Golden Bay Beach. It was so busy at work the last few months that we had to reduce our number of weekly dance sessions. Nevertheless we were very happy with our competitive performance in Malta.

On the rather compact hotel dance floor we started with 13 couples in one heat. It was crowded and sticking to your normal routine just impossible. This is an excellent opportunity to work on floorcraft and we enjoyed it. We end the competition in the 9th place. All finalist were Italian, a strong dance country and the top four clearly were better than us. The Malta Dance Cup is one of our favorite dance competitions of the year, we always combine it with an extended weekend on the Mediterian island.

We have not been reporting of our last three competitions in Belgium (Brussels, Antwerp and Arendonk). We participated in the Antwerp WDSF and two Belgian Preselections to qualify for the National Championship. The Preselections were very small but high level competitions with direct finals.

Uiteindelijk werden we 9de.

Dancing in a church “The Nook Championship”, Noordhoek

This world ranking event in Noordhoek, The Netherlands, was a special experience for us. First for the location, it was in our home country and secondly, it was in a church. Yes, you read it correctly a world ranking Standard and Latin competition in a church. All chairs were removed and a wooden floor was put in the ship of the St. Joseph church. A few weeks ago we were in Riga and Kristel was not allowed to enter the church without a scarf. Here the Latin competitors show and shake their sexy curves, half naked in the house of God. The difference could not be bigger but let’s go back to our discipline the Standard (Modern) dances.

We had many training sessions this week in preparation of The Nook Championship in which we tried to set our technical goals. We could implement our focus points, our floorcraft and musicality was above our expectations.

It was a special feeling to dance in a church. The floor was not as large as in other WDSF competition but the acoustic of the music was perfect. That’s what we call compact dancing in heave traffic because in the first round we had 10 couples together on the floor. We had to dance a second round to make it to the final. We were very happy to make it to the final and reach the 6th place. Our best position ever in a WDSF competition, this is boosting our World Ranking position to place 77.

Results of the WDSF Senior I Standard, Noordhoek:
1. Joerg Gutmann - Isabel Matthes (Germany – WR16)

Second round in the Baltic Open Senior I standard, Riga

After a two month break of competitive dancing, we travelled to Riga last weekend for the Baltic Open. A major World Ranking event of three days and more than 2.000 couples. It was our first visit to Latvia. We were lucky with the weather since it was about zero degrees. Normally it should be ten degrees colder this time of the year.

We have to congratulate the organisation because the event halls were heated to perfection. After a warming-up session we danced our first round in a very strong field. Our dancing quality reached our expected level and we made it to the second round. In the second round we tried again but could not go further. Overall a good feeling to be dancing again on a competitive level.

Grand-Prix of the city of Bertrange – WDSF Senior I

It was a very tiring weekend. On Saturday we danced the Antwerp Open in the evening. We left Antwerp (Belgium) at midnight for a drive to Bertrange (Luxembourg) where we had to dance at 10 o’clock in the morning. We arrived at 2:30 at night in the hotel and had to get up at 07:00. We were already in the ballroom at 8:30, ready for the warming-up and a small breakfast. This is the worst timetable you can imagine. We were not the only couple that participated in both competitions, five made this challenging trip during the night.

Surprisingly we even danced better than the evening before. Probably due to the competition routine. You remember well what you could improve from the evening before and apply it a few hours later. It looks like we did not perform well ending in place 13 out of 16 couples but when you look at the World Ranking positions of the top 12, you have peace with it. We even took 19 markings from these world toppers and consider this a victory. After this competition we improved our Senior I ranking position to number 95 in the world. Now we have to drive back home for about four hours.

Results of the WDSF Senior I Standard, Luxembourg Open 2014, Bertrange:
1. Andreas Lippok - Karin Eva Rode (Germany – WR6)
2. Klaus Genterczewsky - Julia Quinot (Germany – WR7)
3. Ruben Viciana Lopez - Eva Moya (Spain – WR9)
4. Anthony Chong - Gloria Chien (Canada – WR47)

Open Benelux Championship – WDSF Senior I - Antwerpen

A few weeks before the Benelux Championship, we were contacted by the Belgian Dance Federation that we promoted from the B-Class to the A-class or the international Championship class. As a consequence we could only participate in the Open Benelux Championship which was at the same time a world ranking competition.

17 couples from 6 countries participated. In this competition we focused predominantly on head positions and stability of our dancing. Due to the adrenaline and our competitive nature we mostly dance too big and too powerful in relation to our technical skills. So we focused on control. We were very happy to reach the semi-finals and this result has put us exactly on place 100 of the World Ranking Senior I. This was our goal for 2014 and it has materialized.

We also had support at the side of the dance floor. Our coach Herman Lak was present and provided comments after each round. We also appreciated very much that one of our first teachers Fons Kaptein came to the competition to support us. Thanks.

Hartelijk dank.
