Saphir Cup 2016 – WDSF Senior I Standard, Paris

This weekend we danced the WDSF Senior I Standard in Paris, a very good competition organised by Marc Couderc. We were surprised of the large number spectators, the venue grandstand was completely full. International competitors coming from all over Europe were cheered on by the crowd.

In our first round we could execute our main attention points and brought a quality aligned with our technical skill level. Since we started dancing intensively again since October, our physical shape is improving. The judges marked us 37 times out of 45 to qualify for the semi-final.

In the semi-final we were happy with our performance and ended the competition on place 11. With this result we climbed a few places on the World Ranking to place 78.

Swiss International Dance Festival, Chiasso

This was our first World Ranking competition since two months. We registered for the WDSF Senior I standard in Chiasso, assuming to dance the Swiss International Dance Festival with couples from all over Europe. Since Chiasso is on the Italian border, almost all couples came from Italy. Italy is the strongest senior standard ballroom country in the world.

We saw this competition as preparation for our next dancing season and knew it would be difficult. Our goal was to focus on technique and to put our latest dance lessons into practice. After completing five dances, we were pleased with the quality. To our surprise we even qualified for the next round. This round was even better but our Swiss competition ended there. We are ready for Paris next week.

Dancing in the Vienna town hall (Rathaus)

We danced the WDSF Senior I Standard in Vienna and below you find a video summary of five dances in the Vienna Old Town hall. It was a special location and great experience to dance together with the top ranked couples in the world. It was a while ago that we saw a video of our dancing and are pleased with the result. Kristel is wearing here new blue ballroom dress. Currently we are ranked number 70 in the world.

A special thank you to Marc Van Breda and Anita Bosmans from Belgium, who stayed a few hours longer to record all our dances. Marc did a great job, recording us from different angles and also giving an impression of the beautiful town hall.

Danse Sportive International Marseille, WDSF Senior I standard

This weekend we danced the 20th Marseille International Open for the world ranking. Two tournaments in one weekend, organized by CADM (Club des Amateurs de Danse de Marseille). This is the second year in a row we participate here. The event is organised in “Palais des Sports” and the facilities are excellent.

After six weeks of recovery from a major surgery, Filip had to mentally and physically be strong to compete. We decided to participate because our flights, hotel and competition entry was paid months in advance. We saw it as a training session and agreed that if it was physically not possible to continue dancing we would withdraw from the competition during the first round. Our only goal was to finish the five dances on Saturday and Sunday.

To our surprise, we could bring quality on the floor. In both competitions we qualified for the second round with 51 markings out of 55. You could not believe how glad we were. In the first competition we became 13th out of 25 couples and the second competition 9th out of 20 couples. Both competitions awarded us more points for the world ranking.

Sad dancing at the Holland Masters WDSF Senior I Standard, Steenwijk

We were registered to enter the WDSF Senior I of the Holland Master last Saturday. After losing our dog on Friday, we considered not to participate. What is the right choice however? Sit home and tub the whole time or try to go on with your daily activities. Sometimes we travel very far for a world ranking competition and now that it is at driving distance, we decided to go ahead.

We don’t even know if our dancing was reaching the standards we would like to achieve. Energy and explosions were missing, the mental and physical strength was weak. Emotions kicked in and arguing was unavoidable. During this competition we were the sad dancers, thinking about our little friend Tommie, who left us the day before.

Grand-Prix of the city of Bertrange – WDSF Senior I

It was a very tiring weekend. On Saturday we danced the Antwerp Open in the evening. We left Antwerp (Belgium) at midnight for a drive to Bertrange (Luxembourg) where we had to dance at 10 o’clock in the morning. We arrived at 2:30 at night in the hotel and had to get up at 07:00. We were already in the ballroom at 8:30, ready for the warming-up and a small breakfast. This is the worst timetable you can imagine. We were not the only couple that participated in both competitions, five made this challenging trip during the night.

Surprisingly we even danced better than the evening before. Probably due to the competition routine. You remember well what you could improve from the evening before and apply it a few hours later. It looks like we did not perform well ending in place 13 out of 16 couples but when you look at the World Ranking positions of the top 12, you have peace with it. We even took 19 markings from these world toppers and consider this a victory. After this competition we improved our Senior I ranking position to number 95 in the world. Now we have to drive back home for about four hours.

Results of the WDSF Senior I Standard, Luxembourg Open 2014, Bertrange:

Open Benelux Championship – WDSF Senior I - Antwerpen

A few weeks before the Benelux Championship, we were contacted by the Belgian Dance Federation that we promoted from the B-Class to the A-class or the international Championship class. As a consequence we could only participate in the Open Benelux Championship which was at the same time a world ranking competition.

17 couples from 6 countries participated. In this competition we focused predominantly on head positions and stability of our dancing. Due to the adrenaline and our competitive nature we mostly dance too big and too powerful in relation to our technical skills. So we focused on control. We were very happy to reach the semi-finals and this result has put us exactly on place 100 of the World Ranking Senior I. This was our goal for 2014 and it has materialized.

We also had support at the side of the dance floor. Our coach Herman Lak was present and provided comments after each round. We also appreciated very much that one of our first teachers Fons Kaptein came to the competition to support us. Thanks.

Hartelijk dank.

Our competition report of the Wooden Shoe WDSF Senior I, Klundert

With only one hour drive, is this the only World Ranking competition we have so close to our home. No doubt in our mind to participate. For the first round we assign ourselves some technical focus points. It was possible to execute them in the majority of the five dances. We were a bit disappointed with the Viennese Waltz, Filip’s head was not stable enough and we didn’t dance forward enough. In general we are pleased with how we danced but we want to make more progress. Training sessions will have to be intensified if we want to achieve more.

In the re-dance round we danced at the same level with a better Viennese Waltz. We end the competition in place 18 out of 23 couples. A disappointing result. Several people we know said that we always danced in the stronger heat and that this has affected our ranking. It could be but the bottom line is that we have to increase our quality.

We only planned five competitions in the next four months and we will use the time to work on technique, performance and physical strength. We hope to be a more successful competitor in September. A big thank you to Johan Blind who was kind enough to make a video recording of the first round.

Result of the WDSF Senior I, Klundert:

WDSF Senior I Standard – Dance Sport Cup Malta

Last weekend we were in Malta for our third World Ranking competition, only 7 couples registered so it was a direct final. The participants came from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Belgium. From the couples who already had 6 WDSF results, the lowest ranked couple was number 67 in the world. The others were higher. On paper we should end on the 7th place, which also materialised.

We had to do all five dances in a row and this was hard. Nevertheless we were pleased with our dancing and won the English Waltz from number 67 in the world. We end in 7th place overall but the adjudicators did not put us last each time.

These were the placings we received:
- 1 third place
- 2 fourth places
- 9 fifth places
- 10 sixth places
 - 23 seventh places

After this competition we enter the top 200 of the WDSF World Ranking at place 193. It will take a while to improve this position because our next international tournament will be in Cambrils (Spain) on 19 April.

Terpischore BDSF Ballroom Competition Senior I Standard, Nalinnes

This was our fifth national competition in Belgium and we now collected half of the promotion points to join the Championship class. It was the first time we danced in “La Wallonie”, the French speaking part of the country. It was a small dance floor and the competitions seem to be less popular. Due to the low number of participating couples, we danced together with the Championship class.

Our first round could have been better. Kristel was complaning about my stability in the arms. The second round and final was more stable and we became third out of four couples. You would think this is a poor result but it was in line with the expectations. The winners were Slawek Lukawczyk & Edna Klein, the previous World Champions and the numer two were Robrecht Krilillion & Nadia Schepens, the reigning Belgian Champions. Easy to say it was a small but high quality field.

Next week we dance a WDSF World Open Competition in Antwerp. We against the world, with more than 20 countries participating in the Senior I. I could only describe it as going back to school, learn a lot and try to do your best. We are looking forward to the “Antwerp Diamond Cup”.

Volgende week dansen we een WDSF World Open wedstrijd in Antwerpen.

“Dens Gala International” Aalsmeer, a new victory on our competition list

Last Saturday we danced in Aalsmeer “Dens Gala International” in The Netherlands. In our category the Senior I A standard, we were with 10 couples and we won the competition. We were happy with our dominance on the floor, the end result and the quality of our Ballroom dancing.

This is a very popular event and became the best organised NADB competition of 2012. It was no surprise that there were many participants in all age classes. As a consequence you are in for a long evening and night. The more participants, the longer the evening will last. This year the event was organised in the dance training centre “CanDance Studio’s”, a fabulous place.

After our World open competition in Madrid, we learned a lot and applied these principles to this competition. In the first round we received 29 marking out of 35, which was very good. Since we didn’t have to redance, we had a break of four hours. We made sure to warm-up again before the semi-final around midnight. This also went well and we received 34 marking out of 35 for the final. Almost the maximum score and we were placed into the final as highest ranked couple.

Around 1:30 at night we danced our final. No, we were not tired; the adrenaline gave us a high energy level. We gave ourselves several focus points and they materialised in the final. We won all five dances and were super pleased even dough we only arrived home at 4:00 in the morning. Next week we dance in Nalinnes, a BDSF competition to qualify for the Belgian Championship.

Omstreeks 1:30 ’s nachts begon onze finale.

The Seventh Mount NADB Ballroom competition in Zevenbergen

The Seventh Mount organised by Toine and Willy Daas is one of the competitions we always attend when we are not abroad. It takes place in July and is a good opportunity to dance a national competition during the summer break from May till October. Many couples prepare their new routines during this period so the attendance could be a bit low. In our class, NADB B-class standard, we were with 7 couples. It was the first time we danced our new Slowfox routine on a competition floor. The first round was difficult but the second attempt went a lot better. After an extremely busy week, we had to give all our energy in the last final and this is hard. We end the competition in the 4th place.

Our Ballroom competition report – Limburg Danst 2012 – B-class Adults

We were looking forward to this competition in Weert. After a two hour drive, we arrive in the sports Hal which is full of dancers and fans for the debutant classes which were in full progress. Our class started a few hours later, enough time to register, warm up and prepare for the first round. Before the start we greet our shoe sponsors QueenE and try out the practise floor. We danced three rounds, first, semi final and the final. So we were happy with the result and our dance quality. We end in place 6 but were satisfied with it because the first 4 couples were better than us. As soon as we reached the final, we knew it was going to be place 6 or maybe 5. This was again a day of dancing and working on our physical condition. It keeps us in shape. The video below shows our dancing in the semi-final. Tomorrow we will publish the video of our final and the final of the Championship class.

Cinderella Cup 2011, danceschool Ekkart in Mortsel (Antwerpen)

The Cinderella Cup in Antwerp is always a very nice event with a good Professional Ballroom Competiton. This year it was organised by the BEL-AL (the Belgian Amateur League) and they had many medalist classes participating (Bronz, Silver, Gold, in standard and latin and different age categories). They also organised a Swing, Salsa and Argentinian Tango competition. The evening was a success with many participants.

We started in the Amateur open to world Standard for the first time. It was difficult for us to dance soo late in the evening together with the Professionals around 23:00. Our first round was not so good, we had problems with the size of the floor and Filip was nerveus. The second round was a lot better and we were satisfied with the improvement. In the end we reached place 3 after a Russian couple that was unbeatable. The Belgian couples Verlinden-Colebuders also beat us but we don’t have the detailed markings of the judges yet. We hope it was close.

Our teachers Herman and Michele Lak also participated in the Professional competition and became 2nd. It was so close with the Italian couple who won that one marking more out of 5 judges in the Vienese Waltz would have been enough for them to win the competion. A bit unlucky. We always enjoy it to see them dance. We were really impressed with the performance of Dennis Voermans and Samantha Kolijn who had such a good floor presence and also with Peter Ekkart and Ellen Ekkart who improved a lot during the last year.

Our first Ballroom competition since three months, Oldenzaal

At the “Dance and Party centre Rouwhorst” in Oldenzaal we danced our first ballroom competition since July. It was the “Big Price of Twente 2011” and our first national competition in the B-class adults. The dancers of this dance school are very privileged to dance in such a nice ballroom hall. We had no expectations regarding the result since we didn’t dance for a while and we changed our programs of the Quickstep and the Tango. In the first round we received enough markings to go directly to the final. The end result of the competition was place 6 out of 9 couples. A bit disappointing but we were pleased to have our new programs a under control on a big competition floor. It was good to see so many friends back in Oldenzaal, we had fun. Thanks to Herman Lak for the coaching after each round.
