Breaking waves of Laam Sing Beach, Phuket

Between Kamala and Surin Beach you find a viewpoint which is an interesting place to have a look and take a break from all hairpin curves in the mountains. A real challenge for us because in Phuket they drive on the left side of the road. From on the road you don’t see anything but on the edge looking down you see the paradise beach of Laam Sing.

There are many flowers and it is a rocky beach. A bit hidden for the public so it is rather quiet. We were surprised of the big long waves and breaking water. People were really enjoying themselves. The mountain hill with all villas is Kamala Beach.

Tussen Kamala en Surin Beach vind je een viewpoint waar het heel interessant is een stop te maken. Het geeft je een pauze tussen alle haarspinbochten in het bergachtig gebied van Phuket. Een echte uitdaging voor de auto te besturen daar we niet gewoon zijn aan de linker kant te rijden. Van op de weg zie je niets, maar naar beneden kijken aan de rand van de heuvel, zie je het paradijselijke strand van Laam Sing. 

Er zijn veel bloemen en het is een rotsachtig strand. De toegang verborgen voor het oog dus het is er heel rustig. We waren verrast door de lange grote golven. Mensen amuseerden zich in het water. De villa’s tegen de heuvelrug staan op Kamala Beach.

Walking promenades alongside Salou Beach

Next to the famous Salou's nightlife the town has broad sand beaches with perfect walking promenades. At the centre and towards the north, the promenades are wide and flat. Making your way to the south, it becomes more adventurous with hills, stairs and wooden boardwalks. The views also become more spectacular looking down on the cliffs and the panorama views of the main beach. From one of the hills we took a picture of people having fun on a Banana tube. This is one of the most popular beach locations of the Costa Dorada in the north east of Spain.

Naast het beroemde nachtleven van Salou biedt de stad ook prachtig brede stranden aan met uitstekende wandelpaden. In het centrum en naar het noorden is de wandeldijk breed en vlak. Als je naar het zuiden wandelt, wordt alles avontuurlijker met heuvels, trappen en houten bruggen. De zichten zijn ook spectaculairder als je van een hoger gelegen punt naar beneden kijkt, alsook de panorama's van het centraal gelegen strand. Van op een hoger gelegen wandelpad trokken we een foto van mensen op een opblaasbare banana. Dit is één van de meest populaire strandlocaties van de Costa Dorada in noordoost Spanje.

Conquering the waves on our expedition to Cape Horn, Chile

Cape Horn is one of the most southern points in the world and used to be a frequent route for cargo vessels until the Panama Canal was completed. The ships had to face wind and waves just like us on the Celebrity Infinity. The rough weather started as soon as we entered the Atlantic Ocean under Peninsula Valdes. The trip to Cape Horn was going to take about 24 hours.

After diner we went to the theater for the show which was adjusted due to the weather conditions. The ship was rolling and hitting waves. Before going to bed Filip had to take a sea sickness pill. At night the waves reached peaks of 28 feet and some items in the room fell down. While sleeping, Kristel hit her head on the nightstand. The next day it was already better. Your body gets used to it.

Approaching a mythical place like Cape Horn is an adventure. The wind blows hard and spray of the waves easily splashes you on the outdoor deck of the fifth floor. The captain continuously warned passengers to be careful on the open decks. Once you reach the last lighthouse of the world you are happy you made it and the ship turns away towards Ushuaia leaving the sun set in its wake.

Kaap Hoorn is één van de meest zuidelijke plaatse ter wereld en was een regelmatige vaarroute voor cargoschepen vooraleer het Panama Kanaal was afgewerkt. Schepen trotseerden wind en golven net als wij op de Celebrity Infinity. Het ruwe weer ving aan toen we de Atlantische Oceaan invoeren ten zuiden van Peninsula Valdes.

Na het avondeten gingen we naar het theater voor een aangepaste show wegens het ruwe weer. Het schip rolde en sloeg tegen de golven. Voor aleer te slapen nam Filip nog een pil tegen zeeziekte. ’s Nachts waren de hoogste golven 8,5 meter hoog en sommige voorwerpen in de kamer vielen op de grond. In haar slaap heeft Kristel haar hoofd tegen het nachtkastje gestoten. De volgende dag ging het al wat beter, je geraakt overal aan gewend. 

Het benaderen van een mythische plaats zoals Kaap Hoorn is een avontuur. De wind waait hard en de spray van golven maakt je nat, zelfs op het vijfde verdiep. De kapitein waarschuwde voortdurend de passagiers voorzichtig te zijn op het open dek. Eens je de laatste vuurtoren van de wereld bereikt voel je een blijheid, je hebt het gehaald. Het schip keert om en vaart nu naar Ushuaia de zonsondergang in zijn kielzog achter latend.

Half Moon Bay in Antigua, your private dream beach

Before we travelled to Antigua we already saw on the internet that Half Moon Bay was advertised as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In many places they say this but here it could be true. This is one of the most impressive beaches we ever saw. It is located about one hour drive from the capital and port of St. John’s, in a completely deserted area. Maybe this is the reason there are almost no visitors. We recommend you to go there, it is well worth it. A return taxi trip costs $80. If you share, it is very cheap.

The beach has a big sand area ideally for walking and sunbathing. On the left side the Atlantic Ocean bangs against the rock formations. The ocean can be rough, make sure you don’t get smashed against the ground by a wave. We discovered this during our water adventures or swimming attempts but we didn’t get hurt. Use a lot of sun protection because the sun shows no mercy. On this beach, there are still ruins of a hotel which the government thinks of rebuilding. The hotel was destroyed by hurricane about 15 years ago.

Voor we naar Antigua reisden hadden we reeds over Half Moon Bay gelezen op het internet. Het werd geadverteerd als één van de mooiste stranden ter wereld. Op vele plaatsen zegt men wel dit is het mooiste of het beste, maar hier zou het wel eens waarheidsgetrouw kunnen zijn. Dit is één van de meest indrukwekkende stranden die we ooit hebben bezocht. Half Moon Bay is gelegen in een afgelegen gebied op één uur rijden van de hoofdstad St. John’s waar ook de cruisehaven is. Misschien is dit de reden waarom er zo weinig bezoekers zijn. Dit strand bevelen we ten sterkste aan, je zal er geen spijt van hebben. Een taxirit heen en terug kost 80$, als je met verschillende mensen samen gaat is dit heel goedkoop. 

Het strand heeft een brede zandstrook, ideaal voor wandelen en zonnebaden. Aan de linkerkant beuken de golven tegen rotsformaties in. De Atlantische Oceaan kan heel hevig te keer gaan dus opgepast als je in het water gaat. Een golf slaat je makkelijk tegen de grond. Dit hebben we aan de lijve ondervonden maar gelukkig zonder ons te bezeren. Smeer je goed in want de zon kent geen genade. Op dit strand staan de ruïnes van een hotel dat de overheid wil renoveren, het werd een vijftien jaar geleden vernietigd door een orkaan..
